Absolutely! I always suggest that too, just to save the dirt bikes transmission! The only times I shift without clutch is when I’m racing, and really trying to dive into a corner as fast as possible! Also making sure the throttle is off, and rpms are not too high will also help save the motor!

as a Road motorcycle racer we use clutch only when shifting down and no clutch when shifting up. I was surprised when you said the opposite is true for dirt biking.
@RadAdventureDude2 жыл бұрын
I always suggest using the clutch when you can, for the transmission of the bike. When you are racing and trying to get faster it can save a little time working through the gears without the clutch! Just make sure to let the throttle off so it doesn’t add additional stress to the motor!

Before I got my dirtbike, I was nervous about having to shift and giving it gas and all that. But it’s simpler now. After you take off in 1st gear, pull the clutch in while letting completely off the throttle, shift to 2nd and let out the clutch a bit slower than you pulled it in while giving it a tiny good bit of gas. Don’t be afraid to do it, just try it

@alantaylor66913 жыл бұрын
@@490Adrian Since you were 3?! Lucky you! How old are you now? I'm 44 and total noob to motorbikes. Just learnt to use a clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc 2-stroke dirt bike the other day. But I want a dirt bike of my own! I've recently moved to a 150 acre property so I have all the dirt riding land I could want right at my front door. I could ride everyday if I had a bike of my own.
@490Adrian3 жыл бұрын
@@alantaylor6691 12yo at the moment. If I were you I’d get a 230 or a new Honda 250 quad, not too much guts but definitely some bottom end. The Honda 250 quads have a odd technology where there is a clutch but you also can shift without it and no harm, not like shifting without the clutch is bad if you power shift but it’s a good beginner bike. Another thing to look at is a 400ex it’s a trail quad but it’s got some guts to make you happy, just be careful the first couple rides, after you’re adapted. Just make sure to keep up on maintenance and have a tool box filled with goodies.
@alantaylor66913 жыл бұрын
@@490Adrian A quad would be fun, thanks for the suggestions I'll keep them in mind. How did you get on with learning to use the clutch on your motorbike since your original comment? Got the hang of it? I've had a couple of rides with the clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc but I still have to think about what I'm doing and have stalled a couple of times coming out of bogs. Still haven't 100% got the feel of the throttle/clutch yet.

The biggest thing for me was getting it into that first gear without stalling and I've been working on not feathering the clutch as much and it's been going good! That’s great! All it takes is time, and it will become very natural. If your wheel is spinning out you could possibly use less throttle when releasing the clutch, or release the clutch a little slower! I am so stoked you are getting better and finding these videos useful! Keep up the great work!

I rode dirt bikes growing up, then switched to street bikes in my 20s. I moved away from "home" and there wasn't any trails of tracks nearby. I recently got back into dirt bikes. I'm a little confused about using the clutch to up shift and not to use it down shifting. Its the opposite on a street bike. Clutchless upshifts are simple, leave off the gas, it slides up a gear seamlessly. Unless I'm missing something, aren't street and dirt bikes transmissions both the same sequential gearbox? Oh yeah, braking is the exact opposite, too! I accidentally grabbed a handful of front brake on my dirt bike a few times and had some pucker moments. I realized what I did before I washed out the front wheel
@RadAdventureDude3 жыл бұрын
So on a dirt bike I like to let the throttle off, and to use the clutch up shifting. This is because when you have the throttle on and shift the motor is under a lot of stress. That additional stress is what can really damage the transmission on the bike! Down shifting you probably don’t have the throttle on because your slowing down, and can shift down without the bike being under as much stress. If racing it’s okay to shift without using the clutch if your worried about the hundredths of a second, but if your just riding and practicing using the clutch will really help your transmission last much longer on your bike! Yeah different types of soil and moisture levels in the soil have a huge impact when braking on the bike!
@joshhead93683 жыл бұрын
I dont use the clutch to shift uo or down unless I'm going slow. I just let off the gas for a split second before I shift up.
@331moto3 жыл бұрын
@@RadAdventureDude when down shifting, the rear wheel is putting the gears under stress (engine braking) you should actually blimp the throttle to take the stress off of the gears. You can shift seamlessly any time there's no load, from the engine or rear wheel, up or down.
@RadAdventureDude3 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! I always suggest to use the clutch to save the transmission of the bike, unless when your racing and really trying to make up the most time possible. When you are coming into a corner, and you are trying to slow down. Once you pull the clutch in it will speed the bike up as it takes the engine brakes off! So this is why I like to shift down without the clutch!
@aviatorkr2 жыл бұрын
@@joshhead9368 I am the same way, been riding for 20 years. I never use the clutch after 1st gear going up. I will however use for down shifting unless I need to really stop quickly and it's with the proper braking applied. You won't ruin the transmission if it's done right.
