How to ship canvas art can be a lot of work and shipping canvas art can be a nightmare if you don't know how to package a painting to make a safe journey to its destination. In this video, I go through the steps on how I package my abstract paintings to try and minizine damage that can sometimes happen in transit. The items I use are listed below. Also if you found this "how-to" video helpful please make sure you give a thumbs up and watch through to the end. This helps my KZfaq channel to get more traction and encourages me to make more content to help you with your art business.
I purchase all my supplies for shipping at www.Uline.ca
Glassine paper - www.uline.ca/B...
Bubble wrap - 1/2 non-perforated rolls www.uline.ca/B...

This is a WONDERFUL video, Lori! Thank you so much. I'm so afraid of the shipping process that I don't even want to sell my art and have to mail it. How stupid is that. Maybe if I watch your video a few more times, I'll become more confident in what I need to do and maybe I'll actually try to sell something!

So the sides are well protected, which is great, but bubble wrap around the painting does nothing if the box is pierced in the middle where the actual painting is. Just one more simple step - cut a flat piece of cardboard to fit the inside of the painting, for real protection, then add the cardboard sides and tape. Bubble wrap is not even needed unless it's to fill up extra space so the work doesn't move around inside the box, but if you cut the box to fit tight, it's not necessary.

Thanks, Lori! I'm glad I came across this video. That's a great idea for making the boxes shorter. I'll keep that in mind the next time I ship a painting. I use Uline boxes as well (16x12" and 12x12"). It's great that they come in many sizes, but you get a large quantity and living in an apartment can make it tough storing them. Though I manage to store them on top of wood shelves in my studio (2nd bedroom). So with your idea I'll be able to order a size that'll fit most paintings and save space. Thanks again!

Hello Lori! You are definitely a wealth of knowledge! I really enjoy watching your videos and I've gained a lot of knowledge regarding having an business of Art and art making. I would like to see more of your art making process and definitely more about you know the cost incurred in having an art business. I myself and chronically ill but I am an artist but I'm a beginner well not really I've been an artist for 52 years but I'm just starting to get into producing more of a portfolio and getting my art out there and maybe selling some. It's really tough doing everything myself I also have a KZfaq channel and a lot of my energy right now is put towards that when maybe I should be putting more energy toward making the art. Yes I know but it's really tough being chronically ill and also I had a lot of trauma in my life so trying to live with the two of those and trying to make an art career can be very challenging. The worst part about it is that I'm sick so much of the time and I suffer from depression and anxiety disorder along with a whole host of other health problems, some serious, some are not. Thank you so much for your informative videos! I'm looking forward to seeing your videos that you're going to do as of your new move to Ottawa! Thank you and take care!

Yes it's a tuff amount to hear. If I can make a suggestion try to include the cost of shipping in your price and then change your listing to free shipping. Sometimes that can help to take away the sting of a shipping charge. :)

Thanks so much for this tutorial. With uline you have to shop in bulk and it gets really pricy if you're only shipping once in a while -plus you need storage for all these supplies. I think you can purchase mirror and picture boxes through U-Haul one at a time but I have no idea where to find those edge protectors in fewer amounts. If you hear of anywhere I'd love to know. Thanks again so much! I'm shipping a painting to the U.S. for the first time and am grateful for the tips!

What about the center you should put plexiglass on it to cover the center of the painting from being punctured in the middle by another object
@lorimirabelliabstractartist

That's the risk I take...I wouldn't want the unnecessary cost and use of plastic to ship a painting. Rarely does a painting get damage and if it does I cover the cost.

Hi grate informative vid Lori. Loving all you work and working my way through your content. So much helpful stuff to absorb. One question arose when I watched you protecting the painted surface before packaging is do you varnish your artwork. If so, do you have a vid on this. I assume its a must to aid longevity of painting and aid in cleaning it of dust etc over time. Great work. Julian

Ah, packaging. The bane to my artist’s existence. Lori...how do you ship your BIG stretched paintings? I’ve never used a crate. Have you? Thoughts? I bought some telescoping boxes from U-line...packaged my 40” x40” paintings flat...put them in a box....and then was like...OMG these are heavy and awkward to carry. How’s a courier going to manage? Otherwise, yes i ship my large paintings in a U-line tube. My clients have no issue stretching at their destination. I love painting on panel too. So... wondering about crates. If i have to go that route... dear gawd...i’d rather just hand over my work to a professional shipping packager. Packaging takes forever for me. Thanks for your KZfaqs. Just found you. I live in Cambridge, ON.
@lorimirabelliabstractartist
@lorimirabelliabstractartist 3 жыл бұрын
haha packaging is the absolutely worst more so for the bigs one. I pretty much do what I do in this video only like you say box heavy boxes from Uline and a larger size. Yep they weigh about 17-25 pounds once they are packaged but the carriers seem to be fine with it. If I can unstretch and roll for shipping I'm a happy artist. .

Lori, Thanx once again for helping me work out how to go from my spare room studio, to feeling confident to putting my work "out there"... one question, when u take ur work off the frame to ship it off to client, doesn't the paint crack or the texture paste 'ruin' if ur rolling it to send ????? Blessed Be U n ME !!!
@lorimirabelliabstractartist
@lorimirabelliabstractartist 3 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome! if you are using the flexible modeling paste Liquitex, no it won't crack if you roll it. Don't roll it really tight though. Golden brand does not have a specific type that says flexible and that's because their paste (in my opinion) is superior, so it won't crack and can be used on canvas.

If your canvas is shallower than the one you boxed, are the edge protectors still a good idea? I'm thinking I'll have excess of the edge protector hanging over and not fitting as nice as yours

Very interested to see how my paintings will come packed! Also to hear what you say about sending canvas unstreched. I was curiously going to ask u about that. In due course if the money appears {!!} i will email you and ask about commissions. I was very struck by that last commission { hot colours and grafitti}. Best R
