UPS tried to charge me $82 for shipping on a canvas the other day, so I made a video showing how to package your art safely and save money

TIP: plastic wrap on the surface on an oil painting can be absolutely DISASTEROUS! Be sure to use butcher paper or parchment paper FIRST before using plastic wrap.

Exactly what I was thinking- about any artwork, really. The plastic that bubble wrap is made up can be disastrous for so many reasons, like the overheating in a vehicle; containing moisture too long, the oil paint fiasco and more. As such, I also learned that “edging “ the paintings with extra cardboard, as if you were framing it (front and back & extra on the corners), will keep it from shifting, but definitely from getting smashed easily. All the best to you and May you continue to make the art you’re passionate about.

QUICK TIPS FOR BOXES: Today I needed a box, and I went around to the back recycling area of a few businesses by my apartment. Sure, I looked like a sketchy little hobo going through the recycling, but there was a ton of pristine, FREE cardboard I now have to wrap my pieces with. I also found styrofoam and bubble wrap as well :)

Sadly I’ve shipped a painting exactly this way in the past and it arrived to the buyer with a huge hole in the canvas. Idk what they did during shipping but I was so mad. Even though you’ll be paying a little bit more for the larger dimensions, size up a little more than this and add a couple more layers of bubble wrap just to be super safe and sure your hard work doesn’t get ruined.

I shipped a custom painting that was also 16 x 20, gallery frame, via UPS and it cost me around $75. Needless to say, I didn’t do that again. I think I broke even on that sale but not really because the painting took me many hours to create and I had used oil paint which is $$$. It was so discouraging. But thank you for sharing your knowledge! Not sure if I’ll ever ship a large painting again, but at least I’ll know how and feel like it’s ok to prep it myself for shipment.

The prices when it comes for shipping and packaging varies depending on the owner of the UPS store . The UPS stores are a franchise . Shipping costs depend on dimension , weight , and location as well to how quick you want it to arrive to its destination . Another way to save a little bit of money ,but have the piece arrive intact would be to allow them to package it (pay for the packing service ) and ship it at the local post office . When it comes to shipping artwork it’s better to go a size bigger of the box so you have enough room to have protection (at least two layers of bubbler wrap )around the artwork , the artwork being inside some sort of bag such as a poly bag to prevent it from being damaged by liquids , and most importantly the box . The box was altered in a state that makes it prone to being damaged in its transit . I understand that everybody wants to save money (shipping companies have their employees be trained in such a detail way and become certified packagers , but if your putting a lot of time and money into a piece , the same should be in protecting it, specially when it comes to selling artwork and shipping it . Btw , awesome pieces in the back :)

Don't use bubble wrap or any type of plastic directly on an acrylic painting either, not just oil! Although making your own box works, bubble wrap does not protect the painting directly - if something was to pierce the outside cardboard, bubble wrap does nothing. Therefore another a box within a box is the way to go. You can make both yourself, they are just different sizes, obviously. While also making the package heavier so it will cost a bit more to send, this IS the most secure way to mail a package (double cardboard). Bubble wrap is not needed unless you just want to fill some extra space to keep the work from shifting around but if you make the box custom, you shouldn't have extra space. Do not be lulled into thinking bubble wrap will protect a painting if the box is pierced for any reason.

First layer should be glassine, packing foam wrap or even polytab, then bubble wrap, then what works great to protect and prevent holes is insulation foam sheets on all sides. Super easy to cut and you can cut it so it suspends your painting and prevents movement or punctures. I definitely wouldn’t trust a single layer of cardboard but great advice about being generous with packing tape.

This is neat! I like the idea of using the premade boxes from the store. It looks so seamless! Whenever I have shipped anything to a client, I measure and cut poster board to the dimensions of the piece being shipped so it can fit snuggly and then wrap the outside of the box with bubble wrap so there is no moisture getting in or out. I then get shipping labels from pirate ship.

Hey I cut 2 pieces of cardboard the size of the canvas and put one on each side of the canvas and tape over THEN I wrap it in bubble. It adds extra protection from damage. Also, I know you made this before you shipped but there’s no way USPS shipped that for $7. I’d wager around $20. They’re good and cheap for small stuff especially if you can fit it in the flat rate boxes...but if you’re shipping any with size to it it has some cost.

What do you mean it will be $7 in shipping once you get it to the post office? The cheapest shipping is ground shipping, and I am still getting charged $20. It's already packed and everything. What are you telling them to get them to ship it for only $7.

This video was made in 2019. Covid inflated shipping rates. That’s just the way the world works right now. Prices two years ago are not prices today.

$7 to ship? What carrier service did you use as this sounds like an extremely low cost. Priority mail? Parcel Select" UPS?

@@WILLvsTV Even if he did use the USPS the minimum cost would have easily been $15+ dollars for this size shipping. If he in fact did use the USPS, it would be nice to know what method of shipping he used such as Parcel Select, Priority...and not cheat by shipping via Media Mail. P.S I edited my post to clarify what I meant.

We've been shipping for years and this didn't sound right. Are you familiar with USPS Priority Regional Flat Rate boxes? We use them frequently and you can get them for free when you sign into USPS website. Take care

OMG people fucking listen, I'm telling you if he got it for for that cheap, he used Pirate ship. Pirate ship is a service that partners with USPS...got that? When you use them to purchase your USPS shipping labels, not only do they offer literally the best possible rates, you are given access to a USPS "secret" sub-service called Priority Mail Cubic thats usually only offered to certain businesses. They are literally the cheapest possible anywhere, and only available to thru pirate ship. And NO You CANNOT get these rates directly from USPS. This shit is pretty common knowledge among sellers.... check it out for yourself pirateship.com... You're welcome

@@WILLvsTV pirate ship essentially IS using USPS. They partner with them to provide shipping rates that you can't get anywhere else, including direct from USPS... seriously dude pirateship.com not only cheaper than anywhere else but it makes the whole shipping process much easier esp if you're just starting. Plus shit is also free so there's literally no reason not to

If it's a oil painting you always want glasses or parchment paper over the paint the bubble wrap

Then double the corners of the painting with bubble wrap. Then brown paper but most important, use freezer paper over the oil painting, bubble wrap over. Oil painting will destroy it
