This Episode ► Follow me as I light and shoot a cinematic interview! You will learn our process and some of our secrets to creating a powerful image! It's important to understand what kind of space you are filming in and where the natural sunlight is coming from. Finding your frame and composing your shot is the most important part of the process. After framing your shot, the shape of your subjects face should be your next property. Finally, the background lighting should be considered. Clients want to look good and clients will pay you more for it.

I NEVER leave comment on KZfaq videos. But for you guys, I MUST leave a negative comment! 1. Please tell Lynn she is the most patient model I have ever seen. And yes, a man's mandatory comment is that she looks lovely. I am sure the lighting played a part, but her demeanor during the 'fake' interview brought out her personality. You are right, the lines point right at her eyes. It makes her more attractive and now I know how cinematographers do it. 2. Thank you for your generosity. Every tip you gave was immediately actionable, from the items and where to purchase including your personal experience from mistakes. 3. F*ck your humour. Every time I was enjoying your tips, you made me laugh. Dude, you need to do a comedy show on KZfaq. Or, wait. Is this it? For shame... 4. Just to piss you off, here, take my subscription. Negative rant over. Screw you guys. Have a nice day :)

Golden Rule... "Find your frame first". Has ALWAYS served me well as a video pro [who has shot hundreds of interviews so far]! It's not about how long an interviewee will be seen on camera - it's about how well they present when they ARE seen on camera [and you never can be sure exactly how much of their content will need to be used].

A really good video. It's interesting though watching this and other videos on a similar subject, that people are lighting the subject first. Traditionally (yeah, yeah, tradition I know) you would first compose the shot, arrange the background etc, and then you would light the background first, and then the interview subject last. Something else to consider is to light to your f/stop. In other words choose the stop you want first so that you get the depth of field you are aiming for, and then light the scenario to this set up. It's great that there's so much choice of light type now. When I used to do this more regularly there were times when we had to let people know not to boil a kettle in case they blew the circuit with all our lights turned on!
