Love all your videos - very informative, entertaining and lots of great information. I have a large group of people (around 100) I have to shoot at my office and they want it out on the grass in front of our building. The sun will come up and over the side of them and I'm afraid everyones faces will be blown out. I'm not sure what to do because they're set on this one location! (and no idea what we'll do if it rains!) What is a good lens length and F stop to use to make sure everyone will be in focus? I have NO idea how this will go because there will be many people deep....Can you help with any guidance?! I've never shot a group this large before!! And how far in should I focus? I heard 1/3 of the way in as a general rule. Thanks for any advice!!

Superb tutorial. Interesting to watch your style and techniques. Noticed you had a lot of manpower, plus shooting video for this tutorial. If I may ask, what how much do you usually price a job like this? I usually quote for a one day job based on number of people to shoot, image end use etc. I'm mostly a one man op. Cheers from Montreal.

Great video! I saw you use 2 different lenses, when you use 15-30mm and when 24-70mm, depends on size group? Also what focal length you use to avoid distortion, especially with the 15-30mm.
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 6 жыл бұрын
for a 15-30mm lens, you have to get a more expensive lens to not get distortion. yes it depends on the group size but also remember that different focal lengths compress the background differently.

Very nice! One thing I am always struggling with on large group shots - where is the best place to focus? Second row? Just in front of the noses in the first row?
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 7 жыл бұрын
The standard rule is you want to focus about 1/3 in, so I focus on the second row. At f8 there's usually enough so the fall off isn't bad, but if I need to I'll go to f11.

Great video with valuable tips. Wish you had addressed one issue that I always encounter when doing a group: one or more head wind up blocking the head behind them. Or the person behind shifts and looks as though he/she is hiding from the camera. It seems that no matter how authoritatively you "take charge", this invariably happens for one or two of the group.
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens Жыл бұрын
I feel like the best solution to that is to get up on a ladder so you are up high and people can't hide as easily.

Such a great video with so many minor details which can potentially make or break a shoot. I'm just starting out in digital photography and have a bunch of kit I'm intending on helping a mate out next week for exactly this project - corporate employee shoot. I've a semi decent Canon 70D and a bunch of beginner lens along with a single Nissin Di700A flash with Air Commander I'm hoping will produce some half decent shots. I'm not taking any payment for this shoot (he's a friend) but would like to reap some good quality shots. One of the issues I have is the unpredictable February UK weather.

@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens Жыл бұрын
With 200 people you have to have something that will create levels like chairs, risers or steps. And you have to get up on a ladder. When you get up on a ladder it creates separation between the people. Don't be afraid to move your lighting a little closer to the center so it is 1/3 away from each side. Watch the ratios and don't let the lights create a double shadow, which is the hard part. You definitely should have a couple of assistants. And a megaphone is not a bad idea.

@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of potential possibilities, shooting in low light is difficult. So if your aperture needs to stay at a certain value, you would need to compensate with either bringing up your ISO, slowing down your shutter speed and keeping a steady hand, or of course bringing in more light.

I shoot more images if more people in shot. I had shot a wedding in 2008 where I had the bride, groom and rest of the party including family members posed. I only took about six shots and when I got home, found that each image had someone with their eyes shut during a blink. Photoshop helped me replace one blinker’s head with another he had not blinked.

Are you or would you measure each of the individual studio lights separately (set them both to F8) when you first do the setup and then measure the light after both strobes are set up? If you have two lights at F8, the total amount of light could be different, I think...

How do you keep from getting cross shadows with 2 lights?

Do you ever feather both your lights instead of pointing them at the center of the group?

I point them at the center of each half of the group, to get the most even lighting across the whole. Thanks for watching!

I belong to a photographer’s group and someone had a question about taking a photo of a group of people (80 plus). Am I allowed to copy some of your photos from your tutorial posted on KZfaq March 2017. I’m planning on posting your KZfaq site with some of the photos. Just trying to help a fellow photographer. Thank you

i like taking group photos but i want a great lens to do that so help me out

I think the best lens to give you some flexibility is the 24-70mm lens. If you have space limitations then you can go to the 15-30mm, but generally that is too wide.

I know this is a matter of taste, but apart from making a gig like this look like a high production value shoot, why would you want to shoot with strobes as opposed to just ambient light?
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 6 жыл бұрын
Strobes or any kind of light (besides ambient) is going to give you more control over your shot. Ambient light is great for a 'natural' look but especially if you're using sunlight as ambient, that can change every few minutes! We use strobes for consistency in our shots. Hope that answers your question.
