Learn how to sign "vegan" in British Sign Language (BSL).
In this video, we show you how to use the sign in some simple sentences:
- I'm vegan.
- Are you vegan?
- I'm trying to be vegan for January.
Sentences in BSL have a different word order to that of English, so the structure is topic-comment.

I love this guy, his technique is great. I’m American and my husband and I are choosing to learn BSL over ASL because this guy makes it not only easy but fun - and call me weird - he’s hypnotic to watch teaching and I mean that in the most platonic “you’re the coolest teacher I ever had” type of way. Maybe it’s his method, I have no clue but I saw him in my feed and I went down the hole with his vids. Natural born teacher. Way to go Dan!!!!! My question - if I’m lucky enough that he ever gets to see this - is, is it common for BSL to be understood in America? Just curious if I should assume with international business’ and KZfaq and so much travel between people within the US and UK, is it common for the British to understand ASL and vice versa?

Thank you for your kind feedback! Much appreciated :) Unfortunately, BSL wouldn't be very common in the US, so ASL would be more useful. While some signs cross over between BSL and ASL, it's actually quite different. You'll find more similarities between ASL and French Sign Language than ASL and BSL. Thanks again and if you do decide to continue learning BSL, best of luck! You could always make some international friends and communicate via video chat. :)

This was particularly interesting. I had been told there was no specific sign for vegan, so is this new? I'm really enjoying these short daily videos. Somehow it suits the way I learn.

It's relatively new, especially considering the rise in mainstream veganism recently. Some people do still fingerspell "vegan", but this sign is becoming more widespread. Sometimes it can help to fingerspell the word first, immediately followed by the sign. Then you can continue using the sign with that person/audience. Thanks for watching! :)

Dan when you ask a question do you have to do it in order or do you have to sign it the other way if that makes sense
@CommandingHands

If you're using BSL, put the question or questioning word at the end of your signed sentence. E.g. "Are you vegan?" becomes "Vegan you?". "What's your name?" becomes "Name you what?" The structure in BSL can be tricky to get to grips with. When it comes to questions, words like "what" and "when" come at the end of sentences, along with the facial expressions to match (raised eyebrows, head tilt). The facial expressions act as a clue to let the other person know it's their turn as you're expecting an answer. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching :)

Thanks for this, even though ‘vegan’ is one of the only sighs I already know. I used it in vegan outreach in Leicester Square a couple of weeks ago, but I just had to fingerspell almost everything else. Your N is at a strange angle for me, but maybe I got into the habit of doing it in the wrong place long ago.

Is there a specific order for sentencing in BSL? When you said reorder the sentence would it be subject first all the time, then who then when? I hope that makes some sort of sense. 😁 TY.
@CommandingHands
@CommandingHands 3 жыл бұрын
Typically the word order in BSL is topic-comment. In this example, "vegan" is the topic and the comment is "me try". Timeframes can go at the start or end of sentences, depending on the importance in establishing context. E.g. if I wanted to sign "I made a cake yesterday", I'd start with "yesterday" (timeframe) then followed by "cake" (topic) and the comment "I make/made". It's also very helpful to ask rhetorical questions when structing sentences in BSL, e.g. "I'm trying to be vegan in January" could also be signed "Vegan, me try when? January". Hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

@@CommandingHands thank you so much. I think I get a bit confused on the structure of the sentences so that is helpful. Also another quick question. Would a deaf person understand SSE if I got the structure wrong? I’m scared to practice it in case I’m not understood. TY.
@CommandingHands
@CommandingHands 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of Deaf people are so used to looking for lip patterns and visual clues that if you used SSE, it would be help a massive amount. I would suggest perhaps starting by signing "I know a little BSL" and then go from there. When the restrictions ease up, we're planning on having some Deaf people answer questions like these ones. 😊

@@paleonard1979 I still don't understand your comment. Why should this video be presented by a deaf person? I feel that this kind of attiude discriminates against hearing people who need to learn the language (such as parents of deaf children) Dan's mother is deaf. He made the video so he presents the video. I find Dan's videos the best on KZfaq and they're accessible to anybody.

@@emmawelsh5336 nothing wrong with hearing learning. My reason for saying it should be done by a Deaf person is sign language is a Deaf language. Hearing can do any job and so I don't understand why a hearing person is doing something that, in my view, should be done by a Deaf person. All of the best SL tutors are Deaf. It's their culture, their identity etc
@emmawelsh5336
@emmawelsh5336 2 жыл бұрын
@@paleonard1979 well I agree it would be nice if there were more BSL videos on youtube made by deaf people but there aren't. Other than Mel I haven't seen any. People on KZfaq are simply people who have taken the time to share info regardless of subject. Nobody pays them to do it. My observation is that some deaf BSL users don't like hearing people using sign. They say it's 'cultural appropriation' which I don't understand. Is it appropriation if I speak Dutch with my Dutch friend? And then some people think everybody should know sign so we don't isolate people who use the language. Its ridiculous. Hearing people are put off from learning bsl because we're made to feel that we're not welcome or encouraged to learn. Are you a deaf bsl user? Maybe you could make your own youtube channel?
