Great information! I am a big fan of blues/soul singers. I was just curious if you think a guy like BB King ever had vocal lessons or if it was just natural. I was wondering the same about Gregg Allman (my favorite singer RIP) he looked like he didn't even try. As a guitarist it is very hard to "rely" on "lead singers" so I've always wished I could sing. I have tried for years but people usually cringe and tell me to stick to guitar, lol. Any advise? I don't even know what key I sing in after 30 years of trying, lol.... "A lousy band with a great singer will get more gigs then a great band with a lousy singer"...thanks again

Great comments and questions, mp! You wouldn't believe the number of bass players, drummers, and guitarists that have written to me, telling me they first got my course just so they could sing a little bit of background vocals better. Time went on and they improved better than they ever expected to. Then, the time comes along when the lead singer walks out or goes somewhere else. Suddenly they are elected Lead Singer and it turns out they are better than any singer they ever had before. Also there are countless instances of emails I get where someone auditions against 30 other bass players. They get chosen, not because they are the best bass player (or drummer or guitarist or keyboardist) but because they had the best vocals. And all they wanted to do in the first place was sing a little better on their background vocals. It changes the trajectory of the rest of their musician's life! This is a life decision for someone like you. You buy equipment, learn an instrument, know what practice is all about... but you neglect your voice? You were born with a voice, but most of us have to develop it. Guys like Greg Allman or BB King had a different upbringing and were fortunate enough to develop their voices without lessons. The rest of us have to learn. Many "natural-born singers" don't actually have proper technique (although they sound very good). They then blow out their voices and their careers are ruined, or greatly diminished. If you want to have the greatest advantage possible, with the most options, as a musician: DEVELOP the VOICE that GOD GAVE YOU. Find your gift. Develop it, and USE it. It's there for the having. You just haven't found yours, or developed it.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Thank you for your reply. Very encouraging! Everything you say is spot on. Especially the part about the 30 bass players auditioning...Any tips for finding your natural, most comfortable singing key? Thanks again...

Ken's a great teacher even though I think I'm a better singer LOL I don't know how to teach singing techniques I just was born a natural probably cuz of my family. I'm not trying to sound arrogant but it's the only thing I pride myself on. I can't fix things around the house. I can't work on a car. But I can sing like a nightingale. But I still don't know how to teach someone to sing. Ken is very great. But I'm also a lead singer so we all think we are the best. When I go sing karaoke I have so many requests to sing Journey or some sappy crap song. A man who can sing is very sexy to win women but a piano player and a singer oh, you can't top that

Then yesterday I discovered you and for a few hours sang along with you doing your exercises. Today I couldn't believe how much my voice retained and improved from your lessons! I especially like your attitude, Ken. I've had a lot of people make fun of my voice or get mean and crabby when I have trouble handling sounds. My sight singing and ear training course was a nightmare because I've had very few if any lessons in voice and I didn't know how to handle the higher notes (I still don't) and my professor was one of these charmers whose whole attitude was, "A kick in the seat for everyone; we don't care who you are." You come across like a teacher who wants people to do things correctly but you'll be very nice to them as you show them how to do it and believe me, as a teacher myself (I teach English to non-speakers) that makes a big difference.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 6 жыл бұрын
There is no reason to be mean or impatient with people who are trying to learn to better themselves. Belittling others is a poor example for a singing instructor to make. Liking people and helping others is more the kind of attributes that would make for a good singing instructor. Our voices are a part of us, and when someone puts our singing down, they are often putting us down as a person, for getting outside of the boundaries they want to impose upon us. If you encounter a singing instructor like that RUN, Like your HAIR IS ON FIRE and find someone else! :-)

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I finished up one Academic Year with him and that was it. Here in Texas they teach sight singing and ear training along with music theory which I think is a big mistake. I think they should be two separate courses. I now have a programmed pair of books on music theory and Harmony writing and I can work myself through X number of modules a day and probably learn as much as I ever would have under his instruction and the book will never insult me.

We all age, but we can stay in top condition much longer than most people believe.

Brendon Urie has a wicked stratospheric range! I borrowed those words from Nicole Scherzinger on The Masked Singer, but he really does. He’s the one male artist that I really want to sing like. He hits some really high notes in Death of a Bachelor. I like his vibrato too, it’s great, he calls it a “goat vibrato”. Please give us some advice on how to ascend into those falsetto notes, Ken. Each time I try to hit those high Brendon Urie notes, my voice breaks and I cannot do it.

Not only do you have to spend time training, if you're going to spend any time at all on it, the training itself has to be right. All vocal training is not created equal. Some things out there being taught will send you completely in the wrong direction and take you nowhere or even set you back.

Ken, I looove your videos. I love how you can demo the techniques. I found a right way to practice guitar , I don't bored while practising and mind doesn't wander as much when I practice guitar. However, while singing I lose focus a lot. My mind drifts - at max I can concentrate for 18 mins straight (on my best days). Then, my mind starts to wander. I am eager to know the right way to practice which enables me to maintain focus. I am happy to pay for this information or if you recommend some other source I am willing to try them out. I have been making faster progress at guitar than my singing, but I have natural inclination towards singing. That has been gnawing on me. Any tips will be highly appreciated. Lot of people whom I played with were surprised with my voice when I sang. Most people say "I have the gift for singing" , but I don't feel like it is a gift. I have to work very hard to be the level I am at - I believe I am mediocre at best. I want to become world class. I am also realistic I don't believe anyone can become world class in under 3 years of consistent practice.(I am happy to be wrong here) If you can suggest me right ways to practice. SO, I can cut down on my time to progress and maintain focus. I will REALLY APPRECIATE IT!. Thanks a LOT!

I need to ask this: how much time should I spend on vocal warm-ups until I'm ready for the actual singing? Does the length of my warm-up depend on the situation (band rehearsal, gig) and what should I do if there's no opportunity to prepare my voice for a performance?

Ha. Hi, Hjalmar. I hope you learn that I'm not nearly the salesman as I am the Vocal Coach and Instructor. If you look at the search results from this phrase you will find coach after coach that is trying to dupe people into actually believing that singing better instantly is possible, if you only buy their product. People want to believe that everything good can be done instantly and easily. That's just not true.

Rules for singing great ! Rule #1 stay in your sandbox! Sing songs you like that are in your range ! I love AC/DC but I havent found a song I can pull off ,SO I DONT SING IT ! Rule 2. Sing from your heart ! It's hard to sell a song you don't feel or believe in ! Rule 3. find 3 new songs a week to sing ! Nobody wants to hear you sing the same song over and over again( even if you sing it great) Rule 4 .Learn to wear different hats! I sing rock,pop ,country ,blues,soul&funk ,grunge .Watch the crowd and see what they are into ! Rule 5.push yourself to expand your range ! We call this widening your sandbox ! This takes time and work . 6 Try duets ! Nothing hotter then singing great with a sexy girl ! Rule 7 . Sing songs that other people know ! I've seen great singers sing great songs but the crowd wasn't into it because they didn't know the song ! ( Example - Running with the Devil or Big bad Bill ) Rule 8. Learn the words and sing the song like you wrote it with feeling! Rule 9 . Sing in different places ! I have people come up to me and say "Man you sing great” and I say we're do I know you from .It keeps singing fresh ! 10. Keep learning all you can from anywhere you can ! You will sing songs you thought you could never sing before ! Good Luck !

Wow what can I say! Great free lessons Ken. Your sense of humor comes through and really makes it fun. Thanks for generously providing so many free vids. They have been invaluable to me and different then other vocal videos I've seen online. I'm going to find a way to afford one on one webcam lessons from you somehow. But for now youve given me tons to work with. I reached a G4 after watching your Range vids and usually only hit D4. (and it sounded smooth(er)!!
