Ive read some of these comments on this video and it's hard to believe some of these people are grown ups... This young man is his own person . He is doing what most could only dream about doing..he isnt trying to sound like steve perry in any way. He is doing this song with in his capability and doing a very good job at it. He's 15 in this video and some of these people want him to be like perry...I'd much rather listen to this man doing it his way as to be trying to be fake and copying somebody ....you are doing a excellent job singing keep up the good work.....

Of course he sounded like a kid because that's where his body is. But he was completely in tune, and he had fullness to his voice that I doubt he would have had without training. Ken is right--he needs to sing quality music to learn to sing well. Beautiful job!

Regarding My How To Sing Like... Series: People say "I want to sound like me and not anyone else." And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone. But we all have influences, and it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own style that makes us great. Learning a difficult cover song where the bar is set high, is an excellent grading scale to see how well our technique is working. This is also true for learning different styles as this increases our vocabulary for diverse singing and helps us find our own unique voice. In my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but seek to show you how to sing in their "style" safely. Check Out One Of My Original Songs Featuring Some Of My Singing Influences (singing both soft and heavy) Here: How To Sing Like David Coverdale - Glenn Hughes - Lou Gramm - Paul Rodgers When Choosing A Vocal Coach Or Singing Program, Make Sure The Coach Can Prove Their Technique With Their Own Voice & Their Students Voices Whether It's Cover Songs Or Originals. The Proof Is In The Singing.

Hello! There's a lot of vocal "tapes" out there. I started in high school, and worked with jazz singer Jackie Allen, then with Brad Nieztke (sp???), a music doctorate who works with Chicago's playhouse, the black ensemble. They do African American bios and such. Then, I studied Kevin Richards, because he does Rick singing, and that was a new one, but the exercises don't change too much from one to the next.

+Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy You know I have had an issue with this on different levels as a front man I always seemed to want to copy the original vocalist as close as possible (David Byron & Robert Plant), but as a guitar player people got upset because I didn't copy the original. I didn't pick up a guitar to be Eric Clapton or SRV they already exist. I want to learn from them and play it my way otherwise what am I other than a Karaoke show echoing back the original sound.

+John Roberts Funny. My first instrument is guitar. When I was growing up I wanted to be Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, etc. etc. I learned their stuff lick by lick... note for note. It was THIS that made me a great guitar player. This was true for me for vocals as well :-). In fact let me tell you a funny story. When I was young I used to go down to the matinee performance of Led Zeppelin's the song remains the same. I would ask my parents to drop me off at the very first showing of the movie. About 10:15 AM on a Saturday. I would bring my guitar with an check it at the ticket counter because they would not allow me to bring it in the movie theater. I would rush into the theater and watch the live versions of the Led Zeppelin songs and then rush out and grab my guitar and try to play what I remembered seeing. I remember taking records and slowing them down with my finger so that I can hear Al DiMeola's race with the devil on Spanish highway and learn it note for note. These are the things that if we pursue them all of our heart will help make this great Whether it's voice, guitar, piano. drums, bass, keys or whatever. So I'm not sure you're your point but I would like to make my point and that is this ; the more things we can learn and bring our tool box (for playing singing performing) this will help us in the long run to give us an incredibly well rounded deeply rooted toolbox for our craft.

Without a doubt. I started out as a guitarists and got tired of putting up with singers so I became one myself. (like Ritchie Kotzen, Kip Winger and many many others) I have a TON of guitarists doing the program who are now excellent singers. The thing I LOVE most about instrumentalists becoming a singer is that they already understand the TRUE discipline of what it takes to be great. This helps them progress much faster than "someone just wanting to learn how to sing"

You know, he even looks a bit like Steve Perry did at this age. Great job kiddo; keep reaching for the stars!! Steve Perry was THE VOICE, and so few can touch his vocal prowess. I can't think of any other male singer besides the late Brad Delp of Boston, that soared and sustained like Steve used to. The Journey song "Winds of March" -- he soared so high; for 25 seconds without taking a single breath. I timed it; I was floored. Listen to Wheel in the Sky; how his voice soars so high above the guitar solo. Steve Perry was beyond phenomenal; no one should judge this kid here for not sounding like him. Take into account that he was 15 when he performed this song, and his voice was undergoing teenage changes. Steve was in his 30's when he recorded Faithfully, and his voice had years of professional practice. Okay, I am off to listen to old school Journey. ;o)

It's a video from 10 years ago, but I want to leave a comment. Didn't the debut album come out yet? I was moved to see him sing this song so well at such a young age.

You and your students are so talented and I wish you could teach me. I was in group performances in school but I don't do solo because I sound like I am five. Even when I am talking on the phone people think I am five and I am 41. But I really like when people see me and think I am young.

If you have problems with singing it makes total sense to learn everything you can about how to properly sing. Without that, you are fighting an uphill battle. Much of singing is a skill that can be learned. You might be surprised at how well you could sing if you only knew how it's done.

Such a hard song to sing. Awsome job. All these posts saying he sounds nothing like perry. You're right he doesn't but he did a great job on an almost impossible song to show justice to. Loved it.

pretty good. but just one problem, i dont think its possible for him to really truly sing that song til he grows up a little bit. theres just such power and meaning in those lyrics. you have to live it and really feel it. the kids great. just gotta live a little more to really get that song

He sounds good for his age. But still he tries hard to reach the notes. It is a difficult song to sing. Augeri struggled with it and Arnel sounds great but is not so much the power you can reach with your voice but the way you sing a song. Perry adapted the song to his vocals and did a wonderful job because of the way he feels the song when he sings it, and that's the secret. You have the power and the talent, you just have to transmit the feeling. Augeri would sing this song looking at the audience and smiling at people and not sending the message. Arnel walks and moves too much and it just sounds ok. Perry stands up and closes his eyes and feels the song and his voice just goes so melodically giving you goosebumps... no wonder why he is one of the greatest voices ever.

gilbarwaters - are you putting arnel on equal footing with perry? because i think listening to arnel sing "faithfully" is brutal - he just doesn't have the voice to pull of the song..... arnel (who IS a good singer) doesn't have the vocal power or range of perry. i'm no fanboy...and i like the new stuff from arnels journey (especially "never walk away") - but i've never heard a lead vocal as amazing as steve perry.

If Steve Perry's actual voice came out of Ryan, with unicorns and rainbows, the complainers would still complain. That's what makes them tick: Finding flaws everywhere they look and pointing them out makes them feel like they are somehow bettering the world by spreading their negativity and bringing others down. I prefer to look at what is right and uplifting... like Ryan!
