Kurt actually did blow his voice out in Munich Germany. It happened half way through the 1994 In Utero European tour where the band played 16 shows in just 24 days. Kurt blew his voice out on the 3rd song of the night, which was Drain You. Nirvana would continue the night and play 20 more songs. I couldn't imagine how much pain he was in while trying to sing Territorial Pissings, which was one of the last few songs for the night. Kurt saw a throat specialist the next day who told him he needed to take the next 4 weeks off to recover. They ended up canceling the rest of the tour and that would be the very last time nirvana would play in concert. The final song Kurt ever sang live was heart shaped box. RIP Kurt, you are missed.

Nirvana was the first band ive ever listened to as a teenager and i hate him for blowing his brains out..they were the inspiration for me to get a guitar at 15yo and learn it. After that ive come a long way in musical discovery from jazz, pop, rock, country, blues etc. Now im 38, have a band and my own songs...they all have this Nirvana vibe to it. They really were special. RIP Kurt

I noticed that on From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, he does this thing where he pulls his nose down a little bit and aims his rasp up between his eyes. That is a good way to save energy, because you use less with the nasal port open than closed. Another singer who sounds like he does that a lot is Richard Patrick from Filter.

Try singing those parts slower and at a lower volume... also try using a speaking voice (this is based on speech level singing method)... once you are comfortable, you can start pushing more from your abdomen to get volume - without damage to your voice! When Kurt sings it seems easier, but that chorus is REALLY high. It could be out of your vocal range, which is really common for guys. You might want to try lowering the tune and feel if it gets more confortable

Appreciate the kind words my friend - thank you! And GREAT QUESTION!!! My favorite is definitely Chris Cornell because I learned the most about how to achieve power and range from singing along with Soundgarden albums... but for writing/melody/performance, has to be Kurt, followed closely by Layne. Rock Your Best Vocals No problem! Wow that’s a great answer, I think my favorite is Layne just because of the raw energy he had in those live performances. Although Layne was my favorite singer, Kurt inspired me the most. But all of them are amazing, I always thought the 90s had the best vocalists.

maybe you could answer this. on come as you are, i notice that in the studio and most live versions he has that "louder" belting sound that you were talking about, but on unplugged, while he sings the same notes in the same octave, he is not as raspy, and doesnt sound as loud,even though he is still belting? im not trying to cover the song or anything but ive never understood that. is it simply from engineering in that studio? thanks
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ethan, Good question! There are always going to be little nuances in vocal performance (especially with Kurt who liked to mix things up with his voice often!), and I'm assuming that what you are referring to with respect to volume/intensity is because the unplugged is a more subdued performance, therefore he wouldn't be singing as 'aggressive' as live, however I would not classify this song as 'belting' (that's more associated with a sound that is very loud & sounds a bit like 'yelling' in pitch). Just as an example, here is a good isolated track of him singing 'Come As You Are' live: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrZ-h6iJq83OkWg.html which you can hear his 'intensity' is a little bit more than the unplugged (albeit not a HUGE amount greater) Hope that helps!
