My trick for explaining how to get axls tone is think of Margaret Hamilton's wicked witch "ill get you my pretty and your little dog too" if you can say that like Margaret Hamilton, take that into a singing voice and you can figure out axls tone from there.

Hey Jim, thanks for all the explanation and guidance. It seems whenever I am trying to apply compression, it seems instead of my gut, it is my throat that is controlling the airflow and as a result my throat starts hurting within a few minutes.I am getting your concept but somehow not able to apply it practically, do you have any golden advice for me ?

imagine the breath that you inhale counter balancing the phrase that your about to sing which you already know well. I struggled with really high notes for years until during a show in Hawaii where in anticipation of a famous high note, i took a giant breath then spotainiously realized that with my vocal cords getting ready by getting stretched with a smaller gap that this humongous breath i just took is not going to make it through this tiny space. So right then I decided to let about half that breath out through my nose but I just didn't want it to show. While letting most of that breath out I then reached up to the note(s) and nailed it with ease and learned a valuable lesson for the remainder of my singing career. For high notes, less air intake or let some air out...and then Hit It!

I was thinking that if you can sing quietly, then you should be able to sing louder if you want in time, but having that control is the difference between singing and pushing ….and possibly hurting your voice. Then the opposite could be true, if you can sing loud, you should be able to sing quietly and if you can.’t , There’s probably an issue in the execution as well like not enough support. I guess bottom line is both should feel The same and you shouldn’t change something in the technique to go from quiet to loud(or I could be wrong lol)

Awesome, Jim! Yeah, years ago I would literally BLAST everyone and my kids and wife were like, you're too loud! And I was like, I'm projecting! Well, I WAS too loud. Working on pulling back especially as I get higher in my range and this a great reminder about practicing quietly. And, that it can be done! :)

@@RockYourBestVocals i cant temember which song i saw her do live she hit a note i swear it sounded like you did at the end. Were you naturally able to control your voice like that or did you have to practice it alot? I only ask because i played guitar for 15 years before i ever tried to sing. I was terrible but after about two years of working with a great singer, i was able to at least stay in tune with what i was playing. Not good but proficient..but my teacher said he could do it from the first few trys. Do you think that anyone can train their voice?

Hey Cooldad! I'm sorry to hear about your voice! I had to recover my voice after Covid in 2021, and since I couldn't find any solution with any vocal coach I tried (because nobody else went through it), I had to figure it all out myself (just like I taught myself so many years ago). I documented it all and created a course called "Rapid Vocal Transformation" which people are finding very helpful, so maybe you'd like to join if that's any use to you. Link is here: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/offers/LFQHtCGz Otherwise, reach out to me and book a FREE 15min consultation so we can discuss- link here: calendly.com/rockyourbestvocals/consultation

Watching the video now. At 7:06 into it, this sounds like fry to me - not rasp or grit. Now, I'm not a Kurt Cobain fan, so maybe fry was what he wanted but what you're doing at 7:06 and what Kurt does in the chorus of Smells Like Teen Spirit (grit) or even what someone like Layne Staley does in The Rooster (grit) is quite different in sound than fry. Matter of fact, fry doesn't even require you to hold air back or the "lift something heavy" (which never did anything for me except provide an excellent way of building muscle tension dysphonia) technique. I realize you put a lot of work into this, but to me, that heavy fry sound without actual grit, isn't something I'd want to listen to. I'm not a Cobain fan though. Grit sounds (not fry but grit) don't have that sound of a car slamming on its breaks and hearing the tires skid and the squealing sound that comes from that. Grit (not fry) what Ronnie James Dio used, it's what Rob Halford uses, it's what James Hetfield uses, it's what David Coverdale used and it's quite different from fry. Whereas fry sounds like tires skidding, grit sounds like driving over gravel. It's got a crunch to it and it sounds cool. I've heard that Coabin's voice would beb trashed after recording one song and he'd even cough up blood. Kurt Cobain isn't my idea of a disciplined user of excellent technique in guitar playing, in singing or in any aspect of life. I believe if he'd lived continued to sing the way he did, he would have run into serious vocal problems, but being a junkie has never been conducive to developing a strong, disciplined work ethic or an interest in maintaining career longevity because longevity and heroin don't go together.

As I sit down to watch this, I'd just like to ask one thing: Do you think you'll still be making a video dedicated to doing wtaht I'd guess is called a "growl" whether you want to call it a Danzig (in Mother) or a Tom Keifer growl like you hear in many Cinderella songs or a Christina Aguilera type growl (like in "Dirrty")? No other rock teacher that I've ever heard of has a video on this, so if you were to do it, I would think it would be very appreciated by a lot of people. I don't quite understand it but I bet there's a lot of others who also don't quite know how to do it, but would love to do a Danzig or Keifer or Aguilera type growl!
