Many people look at how Robert Plant's voice has changed over the years, and ask why he can't sing like he used to. I'm guessing that he just doesn't WANT to sing like that anymore. I'm sure he COULD if he wanted to, just like YOU can if you want to. It takes a LOT of practice of the technique though, and many aren't willing to put the time in! I have to transform my voice every year in October for a Led Zeppelin tribute show called Whole Lotta Zepp. It is a really great show with 3 drummers and several other musicians that are the TOP of their game and make the music sound EXACTLY like Led Zeppelin, so the pressure is on my to sound EXACTLY (as much as possible!) like Robert Plant. So, if you want to know how to sing like Robert Plant (from Led Zeppelin days), I hope this helps and you enjoy it. Please also check out the link to the Whole Lotta Zepp page and hope you like that too!

The holding breath technique breakdown and the nasality sound was really spot on for bringing out the words in Robert Plant style and getting the “grit” of his voice , and the engaged falsetto technique hits all the right boxes for how to smoothly hit those stylish high notes ! A great takeaway would be to work on the breath and fine tuning the sweet spot for the engaged falsetto, finding that tone and drifting in and out of it smoothly!! Great stuff really 👍

imagine the breath that you inhale counter balancing the phrase that your about to sing which you already know well. I struggled with really high notes for years until during a show in Hawaii where in anticipation of a famous high note, i took a giant breath then spotainiously realized that with my vocal cords getting ready by getting stretched with a smaller gap that this humongous breath i just took is not going to make it through this tiny space. So right then I decided to let about half that breath out through my nose but I just didn't want it to show. While letting most of that breath out I then reached up to the note(s) and nailed it with ease and learned a valuable lesson for the remainder of my singing career. For high notes, less air intake or let some air out...and then Hit It!

@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't see this earlier, the comment was hidden! (apologies!) 'engaged falsetto' is almost like a very light/nasal chest voice, so you will still push from your abdomen. Just focus on taking in as much air as possible (expanding your lungs to the sides - see my latest video on "5 mistakes" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hp55nsuopsecZHU.html ), and when you push out just push the air out with your abdominal muscles (I also have a video on "Diaphramatic Singing" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bM6hg5Cfv97eaZs.html which should help explain - hope they help!) Good luck and let me know how you're doing with it! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

I think a lot of people incorrectly sing too “powerful” when singing like him, if that makes sense. When you actually listen to his studio recordings, he sings very relaxed, it’s just naturally very high. No one can truly sing like him because they don’t have his voice. The people that try to sing like him are people with deeper or “normal” voices that force their voice to go higher, which in effect makes it sound too “aggressive.” Like I said, Robert sings very smooth and silky, it’s just a high register and raspy. The intro to Whole Lotta Love or Black Dog are perfect examples. The closest I think I’ve ever heard someone get to his style I think is, ironically, Anne Wilson.

G'day, Jim! I loved your video, it really helped me a lot, but I've got a question for you... Do you think Robert Plant uses the same technique in songs like Four Sticks and Misty Mountain Hop? Or would you say it's more of a distorted falsetto with some twang? Also, I would love it if you did a video on Steven Tyler!
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 4 жыл бұрын
G'day to you too! First, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! My thoughts/opinion on these (how I get the 'sound' and how it 'feels' to me when I do these songs).... Misty Mountain for example, the first (lower) half of the verses he is singing lower so I basically use head voice (keeping pressure and that 'chesty/throaty' feel out of it), but when he moves to the higher part on say, "whaddya - whaddya think I saw", I switch to a mixed head/falsetto voice, with any air being pushed out the back of my head and out the nasal passage - as I find these higher lines very nasally, so *almost* like ALL the sound is being pushed out my nose/eyes (hope that makes sense!).... next for Four Sticks: basically the same, but say for the line "there's a funny feeling going on" you need to get a little rasp/distortion so you need to close off the highest part (top) of the back of your throat to let a little raspy air through (not TOO MUCH air though! Just a little is enough) - see my video on "metal screaming..." which should explain that a little more.... Anyway, hope this helps and let me know if you want I may do a separate video on these songs specifically. Thanks again for watching and sorry for the "mini-novel" reply - just wanted to explain as best as possible.

@@RockYourBestVocals Hey, Jim! Yes! The explanation was really good! Thanks for that! I asked the question because it sounded like a default for him to go to a more head sound on those songs, other examples would be Since I've Been Loving you, and the ad-libs at 3:25 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsiYdrOlm7a-eYk.html, they look effortless! What got me the most was the timber he gets on this type of head mix and his chest mix, it's basically the same thing! Is the mixed head you mentioned the same one you mentioned in the video? If it's not, can you help me find it? Sorry if asked for too many things (which i did), I have a band meeting with my bandmates for the first time and I want to make a good first impression!

Hey, I'm sorry I missed this! I was hiding comments I had replied to, so all REPLIES to my replies were not showing!! sorry! The 3:25 part you mentioned (ad-libs in Stairway)... look back to 3:18, you can see where his abdomen tightens... so NOT completely effortless 😉 ...also, on these adlibs, he is letting more air out than he needs to (gives it cool rasp, BUT if you do this too much [letting out too much air] over an extended period of time, you wind up NOT being able to sing high notes... (listen to him lately!).... so, try to control the outflow of air (note, you can still add some rasp, but do it carefully... Thank you for the video Jim. I feel that you incorporate a nasal tone when you start approaching the higher registers. This sometimes happens with the aging voice as seen with artists like Burton Cummings and Ian Gillan. They rarely had that tone in their younger years. It's a natural path of easiest resistance approach, or in the case of the aforementioned singers the only way that they can hit those high notes.
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 7 ай бұрын
Yes, surprisingly the nasal resonance is very present in much of rock singing (take Layne Staley who I find very “nasal” which I don’t think is a bad thing necessarily) what do you think?
@stevekrupey3611
@stevekrupey3611 7 ай бұрын
Yes, I agree. I do love his voice and I feel it's easier to reproduce say in karaoke for me (I wish I had a high range) because the nasal tone facilitates the approach to higher notes combined with some compression like 'Heaven Beside You'

Hey i wanted to ask, in your engaged falsetto , how loud is it ? It sounds much fuller than the pure falsetto but is it really that much louder ? Is it as loud as like trying to pull the chest up there by shouting or is it quiter than that ?
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Devo, yeah it's as loud as 'chest' and yes, pulling it up like you say will allow you to get that fullness and volume of chest sound/feeling. If I did not do that it would sound more falsetto-ey and 'weak' (much of that is due to my natural 'baritone' voice.... someone with a natural tenor voice could do it with less 'push' into chest (pull). For example Sebastian Bach has a very high natural tenor voice (listen to his speaking voice compared to mine) - it would be easier for him! @@RockYourBestVocals The reason for a title is to determine what my vocal weight currently is, is supposed to be, and whether or not the current approach is going in that direction. The confusing part: thick, dark bottom range, bright and light top notes. Yet, not falsetto. Supposedly, the Leggeiro Tenor has a full voice mechanism that sounds like falsetto but is actually connected to the body support and therefore modal. That's it, no deeper reason.

hey jim! would you please answer a question of mine? on that falsetto you mentioned, does it feel like belting on chest voice or a "dominant chest mix" voice or does it just feel like falsetto? thank you for the awesome amount of information!
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Noon, of course! What I refer to as 'engaged falsetto' (07:08), it feels like a dominant chest mix really... you can feel the air moving through your head (up at the back of your head and out the nasal cavity, but it will FEEL a lot like "chest" voice in your chest (in other words, you should feel your chest being 'compressed' like when you are belting in chest voice).... try starting with a high note that you would normally sing in falsetto (at the BOTTOM of your falsetto range), and gradually push the compression into that 'chesty' feel... (you're likely to crack a little at the start, but if you practice this transition about 10 or so times you should feel it getting smoother... the KEY is to push GRADUALLY into the chest compression feel..... Hope that helps! If not, let me know, and I'll do a video specifically on "engaged falsetto" 😁👍🏼

@@RockYourBestVocals hey hey jim! so i was able to do that! the problem was my voice got really tired after just one song... keeping up a show like that must be really hard! how can i keep singing like that for a larger ammount of time? (the song i most struggled with singing was the high part in stairway to heaven)

@@baggiefr Great! Glad it worked! As far as being able to do it for longer, it's just about increasing your stamina (it's like if you just start going to the gym, or running... it will take you some time to settle in to be able to lift more weights, or running for longer distances) The main point is to just keep practicing what works for you, and KNOW (BELIEVE) that you will one day get to the point of 'success' that you want... but take one step at a time, practice a little bit each day and a bit longer the next and next, so on... (like climbing a mountain - it's easy if you focus on ONE step at a time....don't think about the mountain, just focus on each day, each step...) 😎👍🏼

Haha indeed, I don't think calling the type of voice 'this' or 'that' makes it sound any different... it's nice to know terms, but they don't make you sing any better.... I never learned any such terms until I saw them on youtube... I knew falsetto from early singing lessons, but outside that I was blissfully ignorant, and just set about having a 30 plus year career as a professional singer

I'm classified as a "baritone" but don't let that hinder you or keep you in a "box"... MANY other vocal coaches agree that "classifications" of your voice are vaguely useful but don't let it keep you from expanding your range... I can sing E5 in chest voice, which is simply a matter of using a certain technique which I teach to my students... (LOVE your photo by the way - I'm a HUGE Nikola Tesla fan!!! 3,6,9 - frequency and vibration, etc...) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Robert Plant is the greatest rock singer. Period. Many try to imitate but they can't get it ever. The only person capable is maybe Freddie Mercury.

When doing the falsetto engaged you must be doing something with your vocal cords as well not just pushing air ? Another snippet of my mate singing immigrant song.. i shared 1 last week with him doing sweet child. He does that double octave on the high patrs. Also at the end the note is like wow.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7SDaLCctdHKhJs.html
