Being a mermaid is about so much more than just swimming in a mermaid tail, it is a way of life. It is a journey of discovering who you are and who your are meant to be and of sharing a passion for the water with others and forging friendships that will last a life time. It is about believing in yourself through the thick and thin and encouraging others to do the same.
Being a mermaid is about keeping that little spark alive, that little spark that reminds us that anything is possible with a monofin, some fabric and dream.

I laughed aloud when you said don't use a monofin that floats. Whelp, I've failed that, my monofin is very buoyant.

I am the sinky, its just how I do haha. Surface dives and expelling a bit of air is generally how I "get down" as well as using heavier monofins. The Mahina isn't that floaty as far as I have found when its on me, just maybe a bit wider so it can be more awkward for people to use. Water resistance also has a lot to do with sinking. If you're trying to sink while in a horizontal position its going to be much harder than being in a vertical position. Those are my 2 cents!

I actually watched this video to try and help my little sister. A bit of background, we have very different body types, partially because she's 13 and I'm 20. I'm very curvy, in both the right and the wrong places, and I'm very, shall we say, buoyant. My little sister is a stick, and has no natural insulation or flotation on her whatsoever. She has an amazing dolphin kick, much better than mine, but while it's second nature for me when I dive down to the bottom, and I can stay there for a while, she's lucky if she can get deep enough that she's not splashing.

Body composition and tail composition also has a lot to do with your natural buoyancy. Nerdmaid is a very small person that helps too. I have noticed my buoyancy fluctuates with my muscle mass, since muscle is heavy.

This is true, I bought a mertailor fantasea fin too not only because it's pretty but because it cancels out the fact that my butt is a floatation device and I got tired of fighting it lol

I understand the suction effect that Nermaid described to you. It's easiest to notice if you stand up, feet to the bottom, and try to jump into a whaledive, but end up duckbutting because the monofin acts like a brake 😂.

I appreciate channel. There’s so much gatekeeping in the mermaid community and I’ve been doing this for 35 years. I can’t even do a photo shoot without the photographer telling me to empty my lungs before I go under which I’ve never done by the way, I have my own way of doing things where I keep a little bit of my air. It’s like it’s not a joy anymore everybody thinks they’re an expert. These tips actually work

When I use the mahina, it took awhile to first get used to it and stuff. But within about a few weeks I somehow managed to learn how to sink more with it, like it was natural so I didn’t really learn how to sink I just experimented with it until I learned how to sink more efficiently.

I have experience with monofins and my friends are into mermaiding and i thought "holy crap, that looks like fun". So i heard that a fin fun tail is good for beginners because its pretty basic. Because as much as id love a big mertailor tail, i know myself and i need to get used to my legs being bound together while swimming and work with it. So im starting small and hopefully in about half a year or a year ill be used to it and have strengthened swimming skills (even if im more than proficient already). Im wayyyyyyy too anxious about something bad happening so im being overly cautious. Lol better safe than sorry. I love your videos!! And thank you for the safety tips!

I had a fin fun tail for yeeeeaaars before I got my mertailor fabric tail and big ol' 18lb fin lol I still love my fin fun it's a great beginning tail and it's pretty; as for you being nervous I'd say don't let it stress you too much- I actually enjoyed swimming more in the tail than I ever have with legs, it's not as constricting as it seems honestly thanks to the material they use and even with a finfun fin you can propel yourself pretty dang good lol

My younger brother can hold his breath a long time. mostly from using drains as base during sharks and minnows. I don't got gills. I'm a mamalian mermaid. I breach like a shark and fall like a whale and that's probably not very graceful but damnit it's the best i can do. let me live

Good stuff! Yes, just keep pracitcing pracitcing practicing.... Someone once said water is the strongest stuff on earth, so no use fighting it. If we can get to the place where we are fluid and not thrashing about, we can control our movements better, sink and rise easier. Water kind of makes us tai chi mermaids...

😭😭😭😭😭 I'm 95lbs at best in addition to just being a cursed amount of buoyant. It's almost like water is repelled at me trying to become one with it and tries to immediately rocket me back to the surface. I definitely need weights but first I need a diving class.

With me, I have had no problem sinking, if I exhale half of my air, I fall almost as fast as a brick does under water, so I think it's also got a lot to do with your diet and physique, like my brother, he just floats, even if he exhales all of his air, he still floats, so he just needs technique, if you float it isn't bad, there is so much things you can do that people like me cannot, so don't be ashamed, there is ways.

Nerdmaid is a limpet????? Suction (lol)... also anyone with a natural blubber layer like me will be floaty... ergh. In scuba diving we learned to be neutrally buoyant... in a wetsuit... with weights... and a BC to inflate or deflate... but mainly you used your breath control... breathe in float up, breathe out sink. Definitely I sink with less than a whole lungful of air. I see this is about NOT using weights... but... A dive belt with light weights (enough to make you neutral) would work, but anyone here who is NOT a trained scuba or freediver should be wary of using weights: dive belts are designed to rip off in an instant, and meant to make you neutral not heavy. Let me tell you about the underwater tricycle race where I used 40 pounds in a swimming pool (in scuba gear). I could... not... surface... in... the... deep...end. I ditched the belt and hilariously dragged it back up the pool slope... do not do this at home. You should always be able to comfortably float at the surface.
