In this ski touring tutorial we squeezed 10 tutorials into one so it will contain a lot of information but we could obviously not cover everything and we apologise for that so make sure to take appropriate safety courses! Dave Searle teaches us many basics tips and tricks about ski touring. Good stuff Jens. What I will say is, nothing beats doing your AST1 course. Getting hands on and used to your equipment before heading out is very important. Having the equipment is useless without knowing how to use it. Understanding your transceiver is especially important.Just to add, skiing down after your tour should be planned and methodical. Rarely do you ski down together. I hope people read this comment.

also, you might be able to rescue your friends, but how good is your first aid ? If you really want to play outside the boundaries, avvie and first aid education are essential.

Absolutely! Nothing substitutes proper training on avalanche avoidance and rescue and first aid. Definitely do a course! These topics were beyond the scope of this video unfortunately...

More Dave videos please! Any touring and off piste stuff would be cool. Some ideas: 1. Any video that involves Jens and Dave doing something rad in Chamonix involving axes and rope 2. More avy info 3. Tips for first tour involving a mountain hut 4. Practical advice on throwing freestyle tricks into an off piste line (eg how much do you need to scope the landing before hitting a drop?) 5. Skiing couloirs

Awesome tutorial! Apart from teaching everything very easily, Dave even showed me something new: the skin trick! Bring him back, make a series a Touring! At least I wouldwatch them all around a 1.000 times so I'd drive the views up 😂

Excellent how to video. I started BC touring two years ago and am fortunate to have an experienced ski touring friends to go with. They are locals who are familiar with the terrain and very patient coaches. I have learned about safety and touring technique from them. One other thing that I have learned is the value of light weight gear if you are going to skin any longer distance on a regular basis. If you can afford dedicated Backcountry gear go with pin tech bindings under 600 grams per binding, lighter BC skis and boots with rubber touring soles. Stay away from frame binding and skis built for lift serviced skiing if can afford lighter gear. My first set up K2 Pinnacle with Marker F Tour 12 and Nordica Strider boots were heavy and not efficient on the accent. My second set up which is Solomon S Lab boots, Volkl VTA’s with Dynafit Rotation 10 has helped my accents with the dedicated BC gear. So do it right and go light the first time you buy your BC set up.

I use dedicated pin bindings for most of my skiing. I love them but they don't take that much abuse when you are freeriding!

It's also important to note where you are skiing and what avalanche conditions are more likely to happen there. If you're skiing in the cascades for example you'll know to keep an eye out for big loose wet avalanches, where as if you're skiing in the Rockies you know to look out for wind affected slopes more than anything. Different regions have very different avalanche problems so knowing what to look out for in the area that you're in can be very helpful. Also! if you're starting touring and you can't seem to get your kick turns down, don't stress! It takes most people a solid season to really get it down, kick turns are hard!

hey guys really nice intro video, you touched just this most important points. You fit together perfectly :) Well there s plenty to do around backcountry, means technical stuff, avalanche prevention, you should add some bit climbing on top of that. But well - what about to make a series of videos oriented to the backcountry itself as you did on freestyle topics Jens?

Love the tips! Would love to learn more about avalanches, and backcountry navigation. I ski on the US east coast. Many of our lines are in the forest. It’s easy to get lost without good map and compass skills.

Nice, I vote for using a rope to access a coloir or avoiding a small cliff, there are not many tutorials about that. Crevasse rescue is my second option. Thanks!

Great info and beautiful scenery. Entertaining getting into alpine touring as jus came from local ski show this weekend. You both did very well. Ski recommendations? as see shift bindings being used would be appreciated. Thanks.

Most important thing when setting a skin track: make shallow, wide, switchbacks, especially if it's a large group. It should be like an easy hiking trail, not steep ramps. If it's a big group, the track will get packed down a lot and become very difficult for the last people to ascend because it's so smooth.

Slope angles can vary as much as +/- 4° in complex terrain. Slope angle is measured as the average angle of a certain area.

Great video, I started skiing on pistes in the early morning this season to get the hang of it before being more adventurous in the back country, i love the peace it brings, I also did avalanche and transceiver training. Two specific topics I struggled with; firstly the correct clothing choices as they differ from downhill skiing in my experience; and secondly there seems to be differing opinions on whether you are actually allowed skin up the side of pistes?

I’ve always wanted to learn about how downhill ski touring works, especially maintaining the binding where it doesn’t hook into the heel. I’ve seen people doing it by bending their knees and bringing them towards their skiis on the turns (like a lunge). Super interested to see a video about that. Also, great channel and awesome tips!!

I think waht you are describing is telemark skiing. It's not exactly the same as ski touring, and there is specialized equipment available. I am pretty sure I saw some great KZfaq videos on that subject...

A few more things you need in your pack ....1. compass. 2. multi tool. 3. Topo map ......well theres 3 important ones , I carry more . I do mountain rescues and it amazes me how unprepared folks are out there .....

Frame u don’t have to be an expert skier to go ski touring, just confidence in your abilities and some experience in the backountry through an ast course. and you HAVE to have an avalanche beacon, avy shovel, and probe. take an avy course if u want to head out into the backountry

Ski touring doesnt have to be intense steep runs, the most important piece to be confident with is avalanche safety, I would strongly recommend getting your ast level 1

Nice video and helpful hints. I hope it’s not too critical, but you should wear your beacon under you outermost layer, or in a special pocket designed in your pants. . At one point you were skinning uphill with the beacon uncovered.
