How To Slide On Clay (5 Tips) #tennis
One of the biggest challenges with playing on a clay court is your movement. Changing direction at speed can be difficult, unless you can slide.
In this video I give you 5 tips for sliding.
Please note, sliding must be practiced safely. Gradually build up your sliding skills before attempting within a competitive environment. This video is suitable for advanced players that already have good athletic foundations.

Thanks for video. These tips are great for ppl just starting to play on clay. I've played a lot on artificial clay and I really don't like it because it doesn't suit my attacking style. I slide very well but the strange bounces off the surface (particularly off lines) drives me crazy sometimes and it makes so hard to take ball off the rise. So I'm forced to play back and rallies are long and grinding. I really don't see how Fed can play this surface at all but he won French and made the finals in many. The one thing I notice about clay is that to be successful at it, you must have a good backhand. This surface exposes players with poor backhands. Every ATP winner of the French has a great backhand. And probably tells you why Sampras never came close to winning the French.

As someone who has played on hard court only and than signed up to a tournament only after a couple of playing on clay, I can say it isn't a good idea, still when I play on clay I just never feel in balance so I am afraid of accelerating and also am not able to recover and get to the ball i would've easily gotten on hard court when I am moved to the side

I literally just signed up for a clay tournament in April and have never played on it. I was planning on signing up as a 5.0, but am thinking of dropping down to a 4.5 to accommodate for my lack of experience on the surface. Also, my game relies on acceleration and power on the ball, two things which I lose on clay.

I play on clay constantly. The only times I have ever managed to slide were by accident when I was low and trying to change direction quickly. You'd think I would be able to do it since I grew up ice skating, too. How frustrating.

Are you comfortable sliding? If so, did you get taught or did you learn through experimenting?

These are all very good tips but they mostly assume you already know how to slide! They're more about WHEN to slide, or how to refine your slide. Jump to #5 if you've never been able to slide and have no confidence in trying it. There are some good tips in #5.

I didn't even know that artificial clay existed! I'm from Argentina, which uses mostly clay courts, maybe that's why.

this was actually the first video on "weak foot" sliding. Any further tips after two years on how to slide on your weak foot? Especially where to balance as the turn back on backhand is a little different than on fh.

Thanks for the video, I loved the tips! For me, it's still difficult to know when to actually start the slide. The mistake I usually make is that I make a normal step, touch the ground with my foot, and then try to slide. What happens is that my foot blocks immediately. As I could seem from the video, the slide should be the hole step, meaning that it starts in the beginning of the "gesture" of the step. Does it make any sense??

Thanks for this. I see that Swiatek slides perfectly on hard court. Does this involve some risks in terms of injury? Also, i think pointing the toes ahead when sliding is an important factor in order to prevent injuries.

Lots of pros are sliding on hard courts but for most of us, it’s not something that I’d advise trying because of the injury risk. Pro’s are so well physically conditioned that their ankles can cope with the forces seen when sliding on hard courts. Your tip on pointing toes ahead is a good one… again, you’ll see pro’s sliding laterally with their toes forwards, but they’re body is trained for it!
