I've been building up leg strength over the past couple years by sliding in deep gravel at public playgrounds and on the sand at volleyball courts. Recently, I have had access to a red clay court. At 62, I'm slowly applying sliding on the clay, although it's pretty tricky. Thanks for the lesson.

Great insights on sliding! 👍 I’ve always thought that sliding (on hard courts) was super dangerous, but has become a necessity at the highest levels.

I taught myself to slide on hard courts over the course of about 6 months. I was not making much progress until I saw a video on a slide drill (tenfitmen) and started to do that, then progressed from there. If I had this video when I started I would have saved a lot of time. The points you make in this video are excellent and exactly what I had to figure out on my own. Amazing video and absolutely unique, I haven't been able to find a video like this after extensive searching. Will be recommending this video to people who ask me about sliding.

I appreciated this video, as a whole, but particularly appreciated the beginning - using logic and humor to explain why some players should NOT slide. Actually, my comment about your use of logic and humor applies to all your videos, and is why I'm a subscriber who is always excited when you post a new vid. Thank you!

I think I just found the best tennis channel on KZfaq. Much love and respect to you guys. Such great tips. Thank you! Where is that court with the mountains in the background? It's so beautiful! And where are you guys based? Would honestly travel to hit with you. (I won the USPTA Elevate Award for Tennis Coaching in Florida in 2021,) but that is a court worth traveling to! Also, to help anyone in the comments: I had clay court sliding down to perfection, but never knew to lead with the heel which is necessary on hard court. If you're learning, try to master clay first, it's easier on the joints. Follow everything in this video. Keep good posture as you go for a slide AND keep a good amount of weight, at least 30% on your back foot. Think of it as an anchor foot. If all your weight is on your front foot, you will stick. The back foot can roll in or do anything that's comfortable to you, just don't lift or abandon it. The back knee is usually lower to the ground on slides too. You'll see that with these great athletes. That's why holding a lunge for 3 seconds is a great progression to learn to slide. Just don't cheat and let your back knee hit the ground, build the strength. An anchor foot and not letting your upper body tip or go forward over your front foot will help you slide and not stick. You all will be sliding in no time!)

I would have expected some words about shoes. Just received a new pair for the upcoming outdoor season from Jeff, as no shop around sells tennis shoes. The Asics Gel Challenger 14 I bought are even less flexible than the old model I had, the sole is almost hard and stiff, I hardly can bend it by hand. Is this normal?

I have played on clay and I do slide there. But I never slide as wide as Joker. He is so wide that topples over a lot. It looks comical. To me, the recovery time dictates when and where I slide. If I can't recover to play my next shot in time, I will not slide. However, sometimes you have no choice but to slide even a little. And I really don't know if you can coach sliding. Like you said, it's instinctual. It's a little like sliding in football, there are some quarterbacks who have a tough time sliding and no amount of coaching helps them. And then there are some quarterbacks that do it naturally.

Your disclaimer is great, interested on your thoughts on different hard court surfaces. They are definitely not all equal, it looks like you’re playing on acrylic based court like the pros. In the UK there are a lot of Macadam/painted courts. They are a whole different sliding experience and I’d say quite dangerous to attempt sliding. Far more tacky. I keep my sliding to very occasionally and ungracefully on artificial clay…
@RacquetFlex
@RacquetFlex Жыл бұрын
Great observation, James! We've played on indoor acrylic courts that gave us too much grip to slide... While ther hard courts were more "slide-prone" than some clay courts 😂 Ultimately I do think that sliding is a result of how little frictional force there is with your shoe and the court, along with the momentum you have going into your shot.

Maybe not so clear from the video that sliding on hard is a lot harder than sliding on clay. Sliding on clay is pretty much standard, easier to initiate, been around for decades. Sliding on hard, not so much. Great video in any other respect.
