0:03 Q: How and which body acrylics should I use to get longer work time with the paint?
0:27 A: Mixing in a slow drying medium or retarder is helpful,
0:36 “Misting” - using a spray bottle to dampen the paint or the painting itself is a technique I use.
0:42 A very fine mist over the painting-careful not to over-do it, will keep things moist and workable for longer.
1:05 I recommend misting every 20 minutes.
1:24 There is a product by Golden Acrylics called “open acrylics” you might want to consider testing out.
1:45 When using traditional acrylics some options are:
1:54 A blending medium
2:15 A retarder
2:25 There are liquid and gel retarders.
2:31 Liquid medium has the consistency of water.
2:33 Remember, when adding blending medium-which has acrylic polymer in it, you can add as much to your paint as you like.
2:44 A retarder has no acrylic polymer so you don’t want to add more than 25% by volume to your paint.
3:05 Retarders significantly slow down the drying time if you mix the maximum amount into your paint.
3:14 While you prepare your palette, you can mix the mediums or retarders into your color.

Hi! Great videos! I use liquid glycerine as a retarder. A couple of drops over the paint on the palette. It does the trick nicely extending the drying time. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing what has worked for you! I’m assuming those are similar to the Golden open paints that are acrylic but take much longer to dry inherently so you have more working time but don’t have to add any kind of retarders to them. Is this what Atelier interactive paints are like?

I like the Open line by Golden. At least get some Open titanium white to mix in since it’s used so much.

Thank you. I may have found my problem. You said to use 25% but not more. I've only been using 10-15% out of fear of using too much and losing my binder.

10 to 15% water is a great ratio of water to paint. You can go up to 25% or so if you like. 😁

Is there something apart from water you can spray on your canvas to slow drying time?
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge 2 жыл бұрын
I don't suggest using a lot of water. There are retarders for that purpose and Golden makes "Open Acrylics" that dry much more slowly. Here's my video explaining why using more than 30% water isn't recommended. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7F-o66GsJrQfZc.html

what kind of bottled mister works without leaving water droplets running down painting and ruining your work. I have not been able to find one. I sure the problem is with me so can you tell me what I am doing wrong.
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge 2 жыл бұрын
I get it. That's really a drag. A plant mister is designed to have a much finer mist so you could look to purchase one of those. If all you have is one of those hard spray bottles, make sure you rotate the nozzle so you get the finest mist rather than a sharp stream and then don't spray directly. rom the bottle. Instead spray up on the air in front of the painting and let the fine mist drift down over the surface of the painting. Heavier droplets will sink to the floor. What I do is save bottles from my facial toner, wash and reuse them with water in my studio. They have a much finer mist. It works great! There's a brand that makes such a great spray bottle called Wild Carrot. Hope these tips help you!

Maam I jus graduated from water color on paper to acrylic paints on canvas..I have a few doubts.. 1. Do we need to add water to acrylic?if yes then how much? 2. Before painting on a canvas do we need to add some medium like liquid white or some airbrush medium? If yes then which one n why? 3. After every color application do we need to clean the brush in a thinner or jus water will do? Maam jus guide me cuz im stuck with the water color tech.. By the way love your work Thanx 😊

I can only weigh in on #3. From my experience, washing your brush in warm water is a-okay. acrylics are water soluble. also dry it off a bit, as acrylics are normally much thicker than water colors. if you want to use acrylics as water colours though (as in adding more than 30%water), mix the paint with an airbrush acrylic medium, so the paint will still stick long term (unless working on paper/absorbent surface). p.s. don't pour your dirty water down the drain. strain it through a coffee filter or pour it in cat litter and throw it away.

Oh dear, Tom! Somehow your comment is just coming to my attention today! I hope you’ve sorted out these questions by now. I have videos on the water topic you might like to see “Worst Mistake acrylic painters Make” that tells you exactly how much water you can add and why. Sorry for the late reply. YOu don’t need to use a thinner. Water is what you clean acrylic brushes with. All my best!

Open acrylics are excellent. I keep in staywet palette all these open acrylics....and use daily. They never dry if you spray inside every week. Never literally!!

Thank you so much, Sujanith for sharing this experience with Golden's Open Acrylics! That is amazing! I started with acrylics and switched to oils in college. I wonder if I would have had the option of Open Acrylics then, if I might not have switched. Using oil paint really hurt my health. : ( if anyone is interested in trying them, I put a link in the description box to a starter se!

@@MicheleTheberge not to pry but how did oils harm your health? I thought acrylics ("plastic") paints were more toxic (particularly the used brush water damaging the water ecosystems)

Thanks for another great video. I was using Open for the first time around the time when I watched your excellent video about why acrylics dry darker. I find that Open dries darker if you use a lot of water or Open Thinner with them, but otherwise they're pretty stable. They should be used on a non-absorbent primed surface, since they otherwise dry too fast and you won't be able to blend with them as well. I think of them more as an alternative to Fluid Acrylic than Heavy Body, because if you use them thickly they can actually take longer to dry than most oils, or at least remain very tacky. Some people say there's a color shift when they dry. I haven't noticed this. I'd love to know what experienced painters think of them. The comments below are encouraging.

Charles, thanks for the experience with Open Acrylics. I leaned a lot about them from you. I am sure it will be helpful to those thinking of trying them out. I haven't used them myself and I don't know any of my colleagues who use them and I know a LOT of painters. I hope more people will weigh in on them here as I am curious to know other people's experience with them as well.

@@MicheleTheberge Thanks. Unfortunately I left out the most important thing, which is that I enjoy using Open more than other acrylics. They just require different handling.

I disagree about using water in acrylics. I destabilizes the binder. This I turn could compromise the paint over time. Seek a medium that is tuned to the paint

ABSOLUTELY! So glad you know this. I have taught exactly this to over 5,000,000 people on this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7F-o66GsJrQfZc.html If you keep the water under 30% you will not risk this. I believe Golden acrylics says you can use up to 50% water on a sealed surface. Thanks for bringing this up!
