Great video. This is one of the best demonstrations on how to solder small components that are not board-mounted and not subject to much pull apart-stress in normal use. This comment is about the segment from 3:40 to 4:30. (The video captions explain the method,) 1, Tin the wires by adding just a little solder then snip to length 2. Components come pre-tinned, but it helps to add just a little fresh solder. Snip to length. 3. Bring the wires together in a jig. (You can buy a jig or make your own.) 4. When the wires are in contact, touch lightly for a second or so with the tip of the iron with or without out using more solder I tend to use enough tinning to not need more solder. Also with these tiny parts I rely on the solder strength instead of wrapping the wires to get mechanical strength. The resistor in this video looks like a 1/4 watt metal-film axial resistor with leads about 1/2 millimeter or less in diameter. The leads are pre-tinned but if you add a little solder and then snip the leads you should have enough extra solder on the lead to make the join, but not a lump of solder. A magnifying glass for inspecting your work is useful when you are practicing. If you tinned the wire and components enough, just touching the two wires with the tip of the iron when they are in contact should produce a good join. If not, you need to practice more. The idea is to tin the wires and components enough so when they are in contact and heated, the solder already on the wire flows together to make the join. The device I am modifying is about 50 mm (2 inch) diameter and about 10 mm (0.4 inch) thick. So I must clip my leads short, about 2 mm (0.1 inch) after tinning. Heat must be reduced to prevent damage to components. This is the reason for just touching the join with the tip of the iron for a second or so. (I use a 200 watt iron with pencil tip.) (This is not what is shown in videos with bigger wires and bigger components, where you heat the work and the let the work melt the solder.) I have not soldered for ten years. So before I started my current project that has wires of about 1 mm or less including plastic sheath, I practiced for half an hour yesterday, examined the result magnified 3x and then corrected my mistakes today. I will do the same tomorrow. I won''t work on my project until I have recovered my skill. Like most other skills, soldering takes brains and practice. And a good video like this one for refreshing one''s memory.

Brilliant video. Subscribed. You make it so easy. I would have had lumps of solder the size of marbles on the worktop and at least eight burned fingers. I am going to restore a GE C600 radio and will find your videos really helpful.

Thanks for the video. I needed to know how to solder a resistor to the wires for one of my labs so that I can measure the temperature of water. There wasn't much detail on how to do it. It just told us to solder the wires and the resistors and put electrical tape on the soldered joints. So this helped a lot. :)

First off, Thank you very much for these videos. Very helpful. Secondly, I am very new to this hobby, but would like to purchase a new soldering gun and solder to further my learning. In this video, would you be able to tell me, roughly speaking, what temperature your soldering gun was set at? Also, I am guessing there are variations in solder as well. Would you be able to tell me what solder would work best for this project? Thank you so much!

Worth noting that "nice and shiny = clean joint" is not the case for lead-free solder which is overall more difficult to solder well
@AvengerII
@AvengerII Жыл бұрын
Couple of issues with lead-free solder I've read... 1) the solder joints don't last as long; they tend to be weaker and break sooner 2) you have to heat up lead-free solder to higher temps which actually makes it more hazardous to work with!

Hey man! When I solder things then all the solder I put on goes down and there is a a big bubble at the bottom and hardly any on the top. How can I get it distributed evenly? Also I have 60% tin 40% lead solder. How likely is it that I could get lead poisoning from it? Thanks for the awesome videos :D

How many watts is your soldering gun? Mine takes a long time to heat up anything enough to get a good joint which makes soldering things like transistors pretty tricky

You seem to keep the soldering iron for quite a few seconds on the legs of the LED and resistors without worrying about the fact that the components may get damaged from the heat. What temperature do you set your iron to? I'm asking because I can't find info about the recommended soldering temperature for standard LEDs. I've done quite some soldering these days and I've burned out many LEDs, even though I didn't solder them for more than 5 seconds. I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I've got a question. I don't know too much about electricity, but I have an led wired up, but it keeps blowing, and I have to switch to a new led. Is it because I don't have a resister?

Newer articles say you can solder the resistor to either leg of the LED. By convention, they generally solder to the anode/positive leg which is the longer leg of the LED. I'm going by convention even though I've read differently! It looks like I'll have to use electrical tape to insulate the solder joint between the LED and resistor's anode leg. It's gonna look ugly but what other choice do I have? Heat shrink might likely get activated by heat of the solder iron if I leave it on the LED unless it's wide enough to fit over the resistor.

@@alpachino468 As China continues to industrialize wages will rise enough to force automation generally. But the electronics industry in all countries is highly automated. What Lv Alex does not seem to understand is that in Western countries, especially the US and Canada, we make things with our hands as a hobby. This video is for us. My last project was a cooling device for my Gear VR headset. My Samsung Note 8 was overheating. So I designed and built a light-weight compact cooling device that uses two 5 volt mini-fans that run off a USB power supply. Works perfectly and cost only a few dollars. (Fans made in China.) I can operate a simple forge, weld by gas or electricity, make furniture, repair electronics (TV, computer, etc) and much more. But for the last 50+ years I have worked at a desk as an economist. I have three university degrees, none in engineering. Like many others I make things for fun much as some people play sports or computer games or climb mountains. I began very early, about age 12 or so with a few simple hand tools. What did I want for Christmas? A set of screwdrivers. Or a metal set-square.
