IT'S THE FIRST TUTORIAL THURSDAY OF THE YEAR!!!!
Sorry for the long video everyone...(had a lot to share) Just wanted to share some insight about soloing before demonstrating the solos... But I get asked this question a lot on how I build my solos and what things I use to prepare myself for one...
Touch on 3 styles of solos and 3 things a solo could have... and 4 things that can really help you during your solos.
If you want to skip all that... just go to 10:10 and see the demonstration.
Audio Interface I used- amzn.to/2qykfeR

Brother, everything that you have said in your video was right on the money! Hopefully those younger folks who are learning about percussion and how to solo will be able to take some vital information in regards to how to effectively construct a percussion solo and have enough maturity to know when to apply different techniques in their approach. We often lose sight of that concept due to our thirst to naturally want to emulate our modern percussion heroes who have honed their craft at developing ridiculous chops, speeds and agility. And even the virtuosos will most like say the same thing that you have stated in your video in reference to effectively approach constructing solos.

You know what, E? We all can find all kind of KZfaq video's showing the best, showing the fastest, the most everthing... so at a certain you might get num for seeing all those extreme performances and still you might be hungry and looking for that crazy one person that is able deliver an even more crazy performance.... With the above in mind i can say that your video give me a bit of goose bumbs as you showed that a clean play is also an art. You translated your expression in a colorfull and melodic fashion with the right amount of suspense. Respect..... and thx for putting so much quality in your work. Paz.

Eric! Wow, thank you for your insights, especially about tone and space. I am fairly new to your videos, and glad I found you. Having excepted that after starting to play congas at a later age (52, now 65), I will never be a monster soloist, it dawned on me that tone and phrasing had to be my main "weapons". This video clarified and gave a voice to what I felt. With your help, I let go of feeling inadequate of my shortcomings, and you have renewed my focus and dedication to this incredible art. Thank you so much!

This video is a godsend! Literally today I was going to try and get in touch with you to request some help with solo-ing because in a couple of weeks I'm going to be at a Jazz festival where I'm probably gonna get the chance to solo. Keep up the great work and know that, as a person transitioning from the drum kit to the congas, its really helpful having someone like you break down not just the physical aspects to playing, but also the philosophy behind this music as well.

I have seen and experienced so many kinds of soloists bcuz when I was green behind the ears, I too wanted to be impressionante...pero...ahora lo mas importante para mi es...expression con amor...I take time to tell a story with rhythm. Great lesson but the art of solo is gone in today music we have to look in the pass for it . I love what you said it all true it’s the communication between the musician and there art . solo conga talks to solo timbale ,solo piano talking to solo trumpet. What you feel should come out . Self Expresion come out in your solo .and if you solo is good ....... dam. And in ending I quote the gladiator Maximus.(what we do in life eco an Eternity

Hi Eric, a huge thanks for all the video you are sharing. I was wondering what are those black things you've got below your tumbadoras?

Haha good catch those are serving trays! Got them from a friend and it’s a nice little hack for not resting the drums on the floor and getting a little more projection.

@@APercussionLife It seems that they fit exactly to the base and the tumbadoras looks very stable. Good catch :)

Whats Up Aaron! I normally try to keep my tuning at a standard tuning to keep it fluent throughout all songs... So my main drum would be tuned at a "C" and then my second drum at a "G"... goes fairly well with various genres
