I have a question, I am making a youtube studio in a spare kitchen that is 8.5x 11.5 feet. The floor is the ceiling of my car garage, so the room is pretty isolated from the house itself. But I do get some sounds from the outside. There is a window opening into the front street where children play sometimes. From what I reckon from other rooms in the house, I can cut off all sounds if I remove the window and complete the wall. I want to renovate that room but this is the catch. I need a window on the front to get some fresh air when I am not recording voiceovers, vocals, and other stuff. I mean it will be my office for freelancing and other work but part time studio. I can isolate the room 100 percent by closing it. I need a small split air conditioner and a window. For the air conditioning, I can place the outdoor unit far off using a long pipe and I am pretty sure it will work. I can also place a double aluminum door with thick glass and it will work but the window is still a big question mark. Can I place two thick windows with a 8 inch gap between them ? I need to be able to open the windows. So far I have found nothing on this. The door is on the side but the window opens into the street. Please let me know if anyone has used two isolated windows and if that can provide the same isolation as a brick wall. Please advise me. Whats app o322 5374048, email muhammadatif10101010@gmail.com.

Hey! You are on the right track, but I would rethink your approach a little bit. First off, how much isolation do you really need? For youtube videos I might look into a company called Indow. They provide window inserts that can reduce sound coming through your window down to 250db. So it won't stop low bass, but that should work for youtube videos. For your door I would put in a solid core door and make sure it is airtight. Maybe start there. The indow inserts are nice because you can easily remove them if need be. To do a full soundproofing job in your situation may be overkill and would require a lot of work. I am not saying don't do it, but I am thinking you might not need it. Thanks for watching!

I have been thinking about how to hang items such as guitars and acoustic panels to a soundproof wall. Maybe this extra layer of wall you mentioned on the diagram allows this without damaging the main soundproof structure.

You could also use a layer of plywood equal in weight to 5/8" drywall and put that as the first layer on your two layers of drywall. This would allow you to easily hang any guitars or shelving.

Hi- Thanks for doing this. Question- in this diagram is it assumed that the insulation is framed? (I'm trying to imagine this from a bird's eye view.) If so, is it framed with 2X4's? If not, how is this new floor anchored to the existing floor?

It isn’t anchored it sits on top of the insulation.

In an Apartment on higher floors, how much do you think should be airgap in double wall system if one primarily wants to block noise coming from outside of apartment through walls and not from ceiling or floor? If we leave 8 inch air gap in walls, is it necessary to match that 8 inch in ceiling and also flooring? Or we can get away with something like 4 inch for them?
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 3 ай бұрын
Good question. 8 inches for walls and then isolation clips and channels for the ceiling. You will then need to float a floor which could mean 1” dense foam or mineral wool over a sandwich of drywall, MLV and plywood.

@@soundproofyourstudio existing ceiling is concrete slab of apartment. So, with new drywall ceiling supported with isolation clips on existing slab, new ceiling would hardly be 1-2 inches away from the slab. Wouldn't sound travel from outside walls to ceiling and then through that new ceiling reducing the isolation achieved through 8 inch gap in walls? In other words, is that 1-2 inch gap in ceiling enough to match the isolation achieved by wall gap of 8 inch and not compromise it?

@@soundproofyourstudio please answer my query in reply below.. it would be helpful to plan things in future...

@@rupinkachhadiya966 The ceiling would be weaker than the walls. You can achieve better isolation by framing new walls and a new ceiling inside your concrete room. Or you just do the best you can with the space that you have.

@@WilsonHarwood Thanks for the reply, I am definitely going to frame new walls and ceiling. but was unsure whether to match gap in ceiling to the gap in walls given that noise mainly hits outward walls. So, matching that gap would give best isolation, right?

In a rented unit, is there anything one can do to muffle sounds from below? Unfortunately I live in an apartment that lets a lot of sounds through between floors. When my downstairs neighbors talk below my studio, I can hear them. Luckily, I can't make out exact words, but even normal conversation in speaking volume can be perceived (just the bass and mid tones though - not details). Are carpets the only recommendation there? I have laid down three layers of heavy carpets already and I imagine it must make SOME difference, but I have not noticed a huge difference. I don't mind impact noises, I just want to tame speech noises.

@@soundproofyourstudio Thanks. The Master Handbook of Acoustics which you referenced has been enlightening when I looked it up, by the way. It led me to think that, first, sealing up everything may be one of the most important steps. It also mentioned manipulating the noise source itself as one of the top options if at all possible (in my case talking to neighbors :) ), then building a barrier, but that's where the complicated stuff begins. I have so many cracks in my floor, I think working on sealing those as much as possible would help. Have to coordinate with the landlord. I'm glad you made me aware of that book, though. It really helps clears things up! It's also really interesting to read if you are generally interested in audio.

Hey what if you're on the second floor and you don't have an existing concrete there just wood joist connecting two units
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio Жыл бұрын
That is where things get really tricky. I don't recommend floating floors, but if you have to it is your best bet. A professional studio would need a floating concrete slab, which is super expensive and requires some serious engineering. Are you trying to play drums or just record acoustic guitar? That also plays a huge role in how much isolation you need.
@gyasirossmusic
@gyasirossmusic Жыл бұрын
@@soundproofyourstudio maybe sometimes drums but not often, mostly really loud electric guitars and some pretty loud belted singing. Also you've been answering way too many of my questions for me not to be subscribed so I went ahead and did that. Really appreciate you always answering all your comments. I would put a concrete subfloor in there with a floated floor, I'm not so worried about the floated floor but the concrete I'm worried about the weight of it all on wood joist.

@@gyasirossmusic Totally, you would need to talk with a structural engineer to make sure the floor could handle the weight. Not really buying into green glue, especially given its price point. Also some dubious, if not patently, misleading statements on its website.

You don't have to use it if you don't want. The two layers of drywall still works. It is just that extra damping layer. You could also look into MLV.
