Thank you so much the great content and for sharing your experience. I would love to get your thoughts on how to integrate an HVAC, which I assume could be the 3rd weakest link?

You are very welcome. The HVAC and your air exchange systems are also weak links. Next week I will make a video on what I used for an HVAC system.

Here's a silly question/option for putting in windows: going "double double". You can get double pane, single hung (opens bybdlidigng window) for as low as $90 each. Since you/we are building a double wall exterior, just mount a window outside as normal, with a second one from the inside. The windows are vinyl frame, so low thermal and sound conduction, 18x24" windows that will give you a functional, relatively high performance window, for only $180 per opening. Not quite as cheap as getting 2, 6x14" custom cut glass (3/8" and 1/4" respectively) but a lot more light., and i dont think it would be THAT much more expensive.

The glass weight matters as does the type of glass. This would be tow thin float glass windows, which would not stop sound

thank you! this is very helpful. but i'm confused about the "all or nothing" concept. in my case, i'm not concerned with building a 100% soundproof studio. i'm installing a 12x16 shed in my yard, and i'd like to be able to play full volume with a band, without getting noise complaints. i'd also like to do some home recording. nothing incredibly fancy. just basic tracking. not a commercial recording studio. so i was imagining some modest sound proofing that you recommend, such as installing hat channels and 2 layers of 5/8" drywall with green glue in between. minimizing windows and doors. adding acoustic treatment. is there no point in this if i don't go all the way? might this approach cut down the sound by a significant margin?
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan! Great question. So what you just described is certainly a great direction to go. The all or nothing really means you can't put in the hat channel walls and 2 layers of drywall with green glue, but then put in regular windows and doors and expect the room to be soundproof. So I think I would do what you just said, but if you do install windows make sure to make them as soundproof as your walls. So if your wall has an STC of 50 then the goal is to make the doors and windows also have an STC of 50. Hope that helps. The key is consistency.

do you have any more info on how to add the drywall underneath the floorboards at 2:29 , are they installed using timber battens?
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio Жыл бұрын
I would just use drywall screws. You would be screwing into the floor base above which is usually plywood.

How did you go about venting the outside or the building in the roof part between your rafters I’ve been told I have to have a ridgevent and soffit vents and or gable vents in my building but they will be gaping holes for Sound to get out of I’m told I cannot block them off it will cause condensation and heat buildup how did you get around it Thank you
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 2 жыл бұрын
Great question john. No sound will get in. What I did is we had soffits around both sides of the building. We did have a ridge vent at the peak of the roof. I used plastic rafter vents behind my insulation to allow the roof to "breathe." Here is a link to what we used: www.homedepot.com/p/ADO-Products-14-in-x-48-in-Rafter-Vent-10-Per-Carton-UPV1448010/202541345?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D22-G-D22-022_004_INSULATION-NA-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-New_Engen&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D22-G-D22-022_004_INSULATION-NA-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-New_Engen-71700000076017798-58700006490415250-92700066966870867&gclid=Cj0KCQiAys2MBhDOARIsAFf1D1dfJ6pmzVd_h0CUWVld48053ZCSC1xHkEjGHd52g7AmzoercR82ohkaAhrIEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds. Then we did a hat channel system on the roof with two layers of drywall and there is no leakage of sound what so ever. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

hi! i wanna built a home studio in a little room i have in my house. the thing is, the walls are made of really thick stone and because of that theres a lot of reverb, what can i do? if i built a second wall it would take up too much space so thats a no for me :(
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 2 жыл бұрын
Really thick stone is great for soundproofing and could be good for sound too. You just need to acoustically treat the room to reduce all the reflections in there.

Thanks for the info. I read Rod’s book twice, some sections more. You’re so right…indispensable reading. He recommends RC-2 instead of hat channels. The issue I’m struggling with in starting to build a free-standing room within a room is this: If the two roofs can’t touch, and I assume they shouldn’t, how do you stop the sound that is impacting the outer roof from leaking into the space between the two rooms? I plan a 4” space because it didn’t cost much more and I have the room to build.

What kind of insulation do you use?
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 3 жыл бұрын
You want to use regular pink insulation. The insulation is for keeping heat and cold air in it doesn't have much to do with the soundproofing process. I used R30 on all my walls and ceiling because all of the walls are barriers to the outside. If you have interior walls than you can use lower R-value insulation.
