I am more familiar with the American accent because I've been watching films and TV series for a long time. When I came to the UK, the south-western accent gave me a hard time when I tried to understand people. And Now I am in the same situation as before. As Spanish individual to omit "r" sound is too difficult to achieve. Thanks to take time to make your videos in order to clarify some of the main problems we have to face at the time we have to speak.

A great video on British pronunciation. Though I have learnt these differences in certain sounds in English in my teacher training, we don't pay much attention to these differences in our spoken English. We have got used to the Sri Lankan English in day today conversation. For eg: we use the same sound for /v/ and /w/ , not paying attention to lip movement. But in written examinations, British English is followed. Your video is really interesting.

Greetings from Spain! In our language we have two different sound for the consonant R. One is strong, trilled as in "romántico" which means "romantic" (at the begining of a word) but also in "perro" which means "dog" (double r, always un the middle of a word) or in "amor" - "love" (at the end). And our flat R sounds very softer, close or similar as yours. You can find it in words as "pero" which means "but" ... At least we have many rules!!

I always learn something from you. Thank you. This time I thought you should have included these words in this wonderful lesson ( part of the -ed words or words ending in -ed or -d. These are: NAKED, WICKED, SACRED, etc. I found them tricky or not many people pointed them out to me as difficult or exceptional pronunciation learning English language as a second language. The good news is, I taught myself, and still do, most of the difficult English language spelling, grammar and pronunciation and so forth. I felt compelled to point this out to you. Once more, THANK YOU!🙏🙏🙏

As an American English speaker, it has always amazed me how frequently British and Australian English speakers drop "r" sounds -- only to add the "r" sound to words that aren't spelled with an "r." A prime example is "saw," which many Brits and Aussies pronounce the way I say the word "soar."

Fun thing is the scandinavian mispronunciation / misunderstanding / misspelling of the word viking in english. I hear / read wiking, whyking, whicking all over. Reminding me of the UK misconception of V / W in german. V is pronounced F in german while W is pronounced V. That's also why german english accent sounds so funny. It is easier to understand the differences between (th) ð and (th) θ if you compare them with the normal sounds for "d" and "t". Just make a "d" and a "t" with the tongue under your teeth and you are done! The same voiced / voiceless phenomenon can be performed with other consonant pairs as "z" and "s", "v" and "f", "k" and "g" and so on.

*TH* In Hellenic we have two different letters for each sound! Δδ Θθ Interestly enough, the phonetic representations of the sounds in English have the Hellenic letter! Θ -> θάλασσα / thàlassa = sea Δ -> δεινόσαυρος / dinósavros = dinosaur *R* The ‘’r’’ in Hellenic is rolled in the tongue but not that hard as Spanish. I think it’s kinda like the Scottish ‘’r’’ sound *BUT* not in the hardest Scottish accent. I’ve heard Scottish people to hardly took their Rs A mild roll in Hellenic *V and W* In Hellenic we have the letter Ββ for the V sound Βαρύτητα / varítita = gravity We don’t have a W sound as it is in English. This ‘’ou’’ sound is a vowel for us. Ο + υ =ου Diphthong u in Hellenic Ουρανός / uranòs = sky *** You pronounce it like You-ranos in English but the Hellenic pronunciation has no -You- in the beginning. Ου sounds like the oo in oops So, it’s oo-ranòs *H* In Hellenic the letter Ηη is a vowel and makes an ‘’i’’ sound like Ήλιος / ílios =Sun (you say Helios) Every word that starts with a vowel in Hellenic gets an ‘’h’’ in English like: Ελλάς / Ellàs = our country🇬🇷 Becomes Hellas in English Ηρακλής / iraklís = Hercules Ηη is a vowel The sound that Hh makes in English is a consonant in Hellenic. In English ‘’h’’ makes a hissing sound In Hellenic this sound is Xx Χρόνος / xrònos = time (Chronology) Χρώμα / xròma = colour (Chromatic) It’s like the sound ‘’ch’’ in Loch In English Xx is weird because makes a Z sound Ξενοφοβία / Ksenofovía The Hellenic term Xenophobia is pronounced as Zenofòbia, when in Hellenic Ξξ is ‘’Ks’’

I'm natively French Canadian and learned English pre-KZfaq in the years of dial up internet 😄 So I'd learn from music and tv mostly. Since I learned it from various sources I have a mash up accent with underlying faint accent that doesn't sound French but people question its origin. Some pronunciation is Canadian, some American, many terms are British and some words like banana or sofa I turn English. Some words with Rs when I feel nervous turns into Irish English 😅 The only sound I couldn't create for a while was H, all Hs. De (the) ouse (house) or elicopter (helicopter) where common. After I could make Hs I'd accidentally add them where they didn't go. I still struggle 20 years later with words identical in French like perimeter comes out French. I'm still incapable to say hippocampus, Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, and such without butchering it. Since I hardly have a French accent left it really confuses strangers when suddenly I sound from a different country or a word comes out all weird. When I was in England people tried to guess what part of Europe I was from, apparently I have a confusing accent 😄. Here they ask me if I'm Spanish and taxi drivers from Lebanon think I'm European. I have the accent of nowhere specific 😎

Well the American English somehow breaks the rule about " - ed pronounced as t". I do remember as an example the song of an American band Savatage called "washed out", where it was pronounced as [woshd] but there are other examples too. And actually I wonder how many people in the UK pronounce "R" in a spanish way.
@Mamabear1138
@Mamabear1138 2 жыл бұрын
She is incorrect about the ED as well. Just remember: ED Past tense ending forms another syllable when the base word ends with D or T. If NOT, ED sounds like either D or T. D if voiced, and T if unvoiced.
