Aimee, since I discovered your videos a few days ago, I have been totally bingeing on them, finding so much of interest to me as a piano player! Oscar Peterson has been a top favourite for me, I never get tired of his playing, so I love your breakdown and demonstration of his blues licks. His blues changes I worked out already, by listening, and I strip the left hand way down, to a series of 3rd/7th tritones to adapt my skill level to need. Love your teaching style, your energy, your clarity! Thank you!! ❤️

Excellent class, first time I've seen anyone using the chord sheet,... and that's how i think of the music - first as a chord, then with any treatments,.. we certainly don't want you telling us each finger and key/note that'd get busy huh? hahaha! Love your class. I hope others begin this 'advanced' style. After years of reading I tried playing by ear, and I still need the crib sheets but I didn't spend years practicing scales.

I usually think of the G913b5 as an A major chord with a G7-root, so ascending: G F | A C# E. Similarly, playing a C# major triad chord on top of a G major triad hand will produce a G713b9. It can be a great shortcut to remembering the notes of alterated chords. Oh and thanks for an excellent video! I'll just tell my students to watch your videos.

Hi Aimee thanks for your wonderful videos. I have to say that since discovering them, I have put away all the various stringed instruments that clutter up my house, moved into the back bedroom, where i have dusted off the old piano, shoved the real books under the bed, and can now be heard humming maniacally while playing silent right hand figures. This is causing comment i should tell you. but that's not why i am writing. The A7 chord which is so interesting in this piece is a not uncommon sequence in gospel music. The I - III7 - VI ,or I -III/III7-VI is often found in gospel playing. To my ear it adds a kind of solemness to the transition from I to VI, Oscar Peterson, of course came from a deeply religious Christian background and his musical journey started with gospel music. It is no surprise,therefore,that every once in a while gospel sequences slip into his music. It is also to be found,if i remember correctly, in John Lennon's Imagine, where it serves the same purpose. In a completely different context it is also sometimes found in what I know as the salty dog blues progression, which goes I-III -Vi - II-V-I. Assume all are 7ths. As an old blues man I assume all chords are 7ths unless other wise specified. Anyway, sorry to babble and thanks for the wonderful videos.

Another nice couple of things Oscar does on c jam blues blues are these 2 progressions in the first 4 bars. (ive written in F as relates to this vid) F F7/A | Bb7 Bdim | F/C C#dim | Dm Dbm Cm B7 | Bb7... and heres another variation. F | Em7b5 A7 \ Dm Dbm | Cm B7 | Bb7... going up to the VI chord in the first 4 bars is lovely. Caught my ear straight away when i heard it,

I had no idea that jazz had any structure until now, always seemed to be a random plethora of notes played quickly to impress, I couldn't listen to jazz for too long, I can only look up to jazz fans as they have found pleasure in something I don't understand. This video has been a great help though and so I have subscribed. I used to play the piano but I had a car accident and severed the ulna nerve in my right arm so now I can't open my fingers to reach octaves, otherwise I would like to have tried some of this. Really enjoyed thanks so much.

As a guitar player ( self taught ), i'm just starting to learn the theory behind it all after years of getting by on the basics. I don't want you to use all your time to do post production editing, adding in text, but as i'm transcribing this to guitar there are moments when i'd appreciate knowing the notes in the chord. Like if you were to say in passing, "this d7 - comprised of x y z notes.", then i'd quickly be able to piece it together and follow along. Not a demand, but if it doesn't interrupt your thinking and talking flow, maybe others would appreciate it too. Either way, all the best! Loving you and your videos!

Im kind of a weak guitar player that sounds decent from time to time. Touched piano a few times. Amazing, after just a few minutes I realized, looking at the key arrangement, silly as it sounds, its all there in black and white, ha ha. Different feel and hand to brain vibe. Seriously though, looking at your lessons is giving me a ton of nuance ideas. Passsng tones, augmented options. Thinking like a piano player is sublime and a rut breaker for a guitar player. A buddy, years ago at the musiscan's institute had to study jazz horn solos and riffs outside the guitar. It brings about an enormous amount of breadth and ideas as well as some crazy challenging lines. And makes so much sense, just have to know a bit of theory and the circles. Thanks... for the music, and the personality...and jazzi cornyness :)

Hi Aimee. I have a question and it's a hard question because I feel conflicted, but it has to do with something you've said in previous videos about taking the time to listen to your improv as you play it. So, for instance, contrast two artists: Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. When Evans plays it looks like he's taking the time to 'feel' his way though an improv. Doesn't slow him down too much, but he's not racing through it. Not so different from what you do, actually. And then there's Oscar. And don't get me wrong, I love his playing. But I was wondering, as lightning fast as he plays, is he really feeling his way in that same process? Or is it just a mechanical regurgitation of patterns committed to muscle memory? Which would still be pretty impressive, but not quite the same as someone improvising in a truly 'organic' way. And even when Oscar plays in his combo I think that he's the star and the bassist/drummer/guitarist are simply following him. Or am I totally off base here? I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!
@AimeeNolte
@AimeeNolte 7 жыл бұрын
+Dave March Good question. I can't be sure to answer it well...but I do know that the lines that might be considered to be mechanical are also beautiful and I know that OP was an extremely thoughtful, studious and calculated improviser; I also know that he hummed along while he played in many cases...I believe he was playing melodically and from an honest place. He just had a quicker imagination than the rest of us do! :)
@babawawayoyo

What is the difference between Jazz and the blues? I've heard many famous musicians that said that the blues were the foundation to Jazz and most of them start out with the blues before moving on to Jazz. Does the blues use the same theory as Jazz? How should I approach the Blues?
@AimeeNolte
@AimeeNolte 7 жыл бұрын
the blues is pretty much just the same three chords in the same order. there are variations, but mostly, blues refers to a 12 bar blues. jazz came from blues and shares many elements. you won't know the difference however until you listen to a bunch of BB King and a bunch of Miles Davis. :)
