I’ve been hoping to see a newer jerk tutorial from Mark. I think these strategies will expedite the process of getting my athletes to jerk and push press more effectively. Thanks!

I like Rip a lot, even when I disagree wit him (not in this video) but he doesn't have a lot of word salads like his counterparts in other offshoots from his starting strength programs, he is straight to the point and doesn't seem to give a shit about being liked which is great for a coach, the other guys seem to want to convince you with niceness, and "getting you onboard" with what they say.

we need a dumbbell heavy snatch video... for those of us with shoulder issues from car accidents or other falls.... I have never injured myself in the gym! I got doctors telling me I need shoulder surgery, with no guarantees that I will NOT end up worst than I am now... but I can press standing against the inside of the rack "scraping the paint" so it is not a strength issue but a stability issue with the deltoids (I assume). And so when I do my olympic C&J, the issue is stability from the floor and catch at the shoulders... I guess is the straight bar and that stop midway; because when I do the DB snatch which goes all the way to the top, I can do it fine with 110 pounds starting from in between my feet. I just want a video to confirm some issues with my technique.

how heavy is your OHP for reps? My guess is rip will tell you to get stronger shoulders. Stronger shoulders are more stable than weak shoulders. I have hypermobile shoulders that used to frequently dislocate, they rarely dislocate now that i can press 170 for reps. If you want rips actual advice you should go to the SS forum and post in the programming modifications threads. Be warned its a very cultish atmosphere and it kinda shows the more suck up side of SS.

Why is a push-out illegal in a jerk competition? Surely all that matters is that you manage to lock out your elbows at the top?
@mattzilla331
@mattzilla331 5 жыл бұрын
That's how it should be. As long as you lock it out who cares. Unfortunately its not. That's why I tend to like strongman better. They don't care. As long as you lift it it counts.

Well the so-called “press out” is basically a recovery of the overhead position when the barbell begins to move downward, this recovery is illegal and therefore the press in the first place is illegal as well.
@09thespecialone

@@marko7304 Yes and to differentiate the slow lift (when the Press was still contested in Weightlifting) from the quick lifts ( Snatch and Jerk). Because the slow lift, the strength lift, the Press was a pressing motion movement. And the quick lifts are both catching motion movements.

I imagine it would be good to alternate the forward leg. The question then becomes how to vary that during a workout (and there could be multiple ways to handle the variation, of course). I wonder if it would be better to switch between sets - so on a 5x5, do the first set with the left leg going forward, and the second set with the right, but from what I interpret, from what I've understood, watching a number of SS related videos, I get the impression that it might be better to do all 5 for that week on the same forward leg (assuming a weekly progression for this variation), and then do the following week with the other leg forward. I have ordered SS 3rd ed. and Practical Programming 3rd ed., and I hope to have them by next week. if the answer is in either, I guess I'll know soon enough. Maybe I should just join the forum and comment there instead of here...

Rippetoe is trying to reverse engineer what ELITE lifters do and apply it to NON-ELITE lifters. It is true that elite lifters, particularly in the heavier weight classes, can use the oscillation or "whip" of the bar to help propel the bar upwards. But they are jerking upwards of 200 kgs. Unless you have a super whippy bar, anything below 180 kgs (around 400 lbs.) will not produce enough oscillation to propel the bar upward. Mere mortals, such as masters lifters like myself, need to dip and drive.

Jerk: sort of a push press.
@09thespecialone
@09thespecialone 3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The Push press is a pressing motion movement with leg drive. And the jerk is a catching motion movement.
@ggrthemostgodless8713
@ggrthemostgodless8713 3 жыл бұрын
@@09thespecialone "And the jerk is a catching motion movement" But when you see the olymic lifters, they INITIALLY also push the bar up with leg drive, but then AS TEHY CANNOT PUSH SUCH WEIGHT with the arms, they lower themseves in that split to catch the bar UP with straight arms... my point is they both INITIALLY use leg drive to start MOVING a loaded heavier bar than they could lift if it were a simple press. Good luck.

@@ggrthemostgodless8713 Correct. I'm aware of that. I was talking by textbook. And by textbook, in Weightlifting, the only slow lift, the Press (not a contested lift anymore) is a pressing motion movement. And all the quick lifts (snatch and jerk) are catching motion movements. Why do you think that the pressing out rule for the quick lifts was invented in the first place?
@ggrthemostgodless8713
@ggrthemostgodless8713 3 жыл бұрын
@@09thespecialone I don't know why .... but it is obvious that the weight is a lot heavier than they could press by using with the arms alone. Thus you MUST get under it fast. There is really no need for NOT pressing in the quick movements if the weight is a LOT heavier than you can press, but I imagine they have another more technical reason why, like the small elbow bend some lifters do at the top, etc
