Here is a video demonstration on how to spool a conventional reel for SHARK fishing. First I show you how to add braid to the spool using electrical tape to prevent slipping. I then show you how I add 500 yards of Spiderwire braid and how to tie the albright knot to connect the smaller diameter braid to the thicker mono. The albright knots is a nice low profile knot that will easily pass through the guides of your rod. I then add a couple hundred yards of 80lb Berkley mono to finish it off. If you enjoyed today's video on how to spool a conventional shark reel, please give a thumbs up, subscribe and comment. Thank you!

Interesting setup there. I usually go with 140 (64kg) braid then just a 120-150 yard topshot of mono usually over 100#. The main reason I do that is I feel like once that mono stretches on a big fish a time or two it loses it’s effectiveness. From the beach the stretch is magnified with how much drag has to be applied so we switch it out every trip. Bulk spools of good mono is super cheap so I go with the rather safe than sorry method and switch it out often. Great video though I am sure your hands were feeling it!

Why not tie off on the spool, then take it, or tape first, tie and tape over? I dont trust just tape for my pressure on reel.

I just finished spoiling a big shark rod. I used 40lbs mono for backing, then 100lbs braid, then 80lbs mono, then finished it off with 100lbs braid. Thank you for the knot, much better than the double clinch. All by hand. Everything is incredibly tight.

Doing the old flip flop i see! Load it up with braid then put 300y of mono on top and end it there. It will prob fish better. You lost all the good characteristics of mono once you tie braid on top of that

I take a long wood screw & flat fender washers. Screw your line spool to a fence post or anything thats permanent with a washer on each side. Then simply tighten the screw up to act as drag tighten it down to your preference of resistance and wind away goes on nice & tight that way takes very lil time & effort. Can also hook a drill onto handle shaft to wind it on that way for big reels👌.

You should learn the FG knot for tying braid ti mono it’s a lot stronger than the knot you used. The knot you used will break at the loop in the mono in the knot
@brummerb375hh
@brummerb375hh 5 жыл бұрын
First - tape the spool and tie braid over the tape onto spool.... If you get close to the backing , having no knot isn't going to cut it. I always tape and then tie a knot over the tape.... to have a knot onto the spool is vital.

Hey Robert, many like to place mono backing because it stretches on the spool and prevents slippage. If you tape your braid correctly it's not necessary. I like to use mono top shot for sharks because it is abrasion resistant.

I agree the senator 6/0 is a great option and the senators are as good as it gets for the price. At Academy sports where I live (Florida) just had the senator combos on sale for father's day and they were only 140-150 bucks.. And the senator rods, that it comes with, is actually a very tuff rod. I've had a couple different senator setups now and they really are great. In my opinion all of Penn's products are exceptional, especially for the price.

That is one heck of a man reel. This is for the big boys. No fooli'n around . This means some serious off shore business buddies. I saw one of these in an antique store down the block. I am starting to get psyched about picking it up. It's got some corrosion but should clean up well. I think I am getting the call of the sea . I better answer before I am gone . hahahaha. See you soon Mr. Tuna spoon hehehehe :-) . P.S. The guy who I will buy the reel from actually fished with Frank Mundus ( the character model for quint in the movie Jaws). So this reel is going to have some serious Mojo on it. I can hear Frank saying to me now in spirit . " Keep your fingers and hands away from the line when It starts smoki'n or you may come home that day with a few less fingers . No joke .

@phillipmichaels5459 7 жыл бұрын
Archery and Outdoors those things are called lugs or harness attachment points. there is one set to put one on a harness while shark fishing, and the other the closest to the rod is for rod clamps. a reel of this size can handle big fish but reel clamps also allow the reel the be clamped on to the rod and it is super strong.

Mr. Josh Sir, another good tape for spooling a reel is the white medical "cloth tape" that is used in a lot of sports. Football, boxing, baseball.....etc. If you don't use it for anything else, you can find it in a medical supply store not too expensive AND 1 roll will probably last a lifetime of fishing. I am a little confused with your knot. I was expecting you to turn it around and do the same procedure to the other line you are adding to it. Am I thinking of another knot? LASTLY and you know me, When i saw the SIZE of the reel in your hands, I REALLY thought you were getting Serious about the "sewer fish!!!" lol Take care and Be Well my friend.

pointless to use 100ib braid... 80ib mono leader is weakest point why waste money on 100ib braid when u could put more 80ib braid and gain line capacity.... the leader is going to break off before the braid in this situation.

JnM_5.56 mono is abrasion resistant, it's not pointless.
@jnm5.566

I know but what im saying is tha the 100ib braid is pointless.leader material should be equal strength if not stronger than the backing. why use 100ib braid when u could use 80ib braid and 80 mono and have equilibrium and gain line capacity increasing odds of landing a bruiser off the beach.
@jnm5.566
@jnm5.566 7 жыл бұрын
Ik mono has higher abrasion resistance i fish 100ib mono leaders with 80ib braid backing and get about 1200yards
@Saltyscales
@Saltyscales 7 жыл бұрын
I think you are over thinking it a bit, I use a shock leader and 80lb is plenty sufficient, I will never use 80lbs of drag, therefore technically I could probably put 50 mono on top and be fine. The shark leader should have ample strength and length however.
@jnm5.566
@jnm5.566 7 жыл бұрын
a shock leader should be stronger than your braid backing.... Im not over thinking it... why use 80ib leader with stronger main line- why not use 80ib braid main line and 80ib mono leader... you would gain capacity and in the event a hammer or tiger grabs that bait u have excess line he can peel off and you save about 50-60$ on braid
