Debo! Great stuff man! Love the hot water trick. I always throw braid to floro leader on my spinning reel. We were talking about the B-Lat video on straight floro. It was on the Scott Martin Channel. I’ll drop the link. I would love a video on your favorite flipping set up. Thanks! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6uUnKRz37HJfXk.html

I’m new to fishing and I’m learning from KZfaq. I spent 2 hours trying to spool my spinning reel based on what others were saying the line should do. I always had it twisting like you showed and I couldn’t understand why, given I was following the directions. Just wanted to say thank you for the video, it’s the best on KZfaq, I’ve watched all of them.

I'm glad u addressed the fact wether the spool matches the direction of your reel spin you're gonna get line twist. I've watched multiple videos where some say they need to match some say they need to be opposite and I was still getting line twist and really losing it. I haven't really eliminated but your video made me realize I'm not losing my freaking mind. Thank u

My Father. After putting line on a bait caster reel or a Spin caster using mono. Would put a old leather belt around a tree limb or corner post in the back yard and attach the line to a hole in the belt and walk the line out. Then put extra drag on. Stretch the line tight and reel the 40 to 50 yards back in a couple of times on each rod and reel he put new line on. Just half the line on the reel. It work wonders. He would also spray the line with line magic. Just that stretching of the line made casting alot easier when going fishing. No tangles no twist. Keep up the great video's and important info. Shawn

After spooling your line, take the rod to the lake. Place the reel into the “release” position and put the end of the line into the lake. Move boat forward, letting the water tension completely drag the line off the reel. Do not have a lure or anything on the line. As you troll down the lake, tension from the water, onto the line, will get the twists out of the line. Reel the line back in, with some tension. All done.

Best spooling how-too vid I've seen. I watched a lot of them while doing my spooling vid and 99.9% tell you to spool your line without twists. Amazing how even the seasoned pros don't understand how line acts when going on or coming off a stationary spool. +1 subscriber. Look forward to watching your other vids.

Thank you. I found the exact same results after 30 plus years, and it was comforting to know that all the different methods don't limit twist, they help in an attempt to minimize it. If you have a boat, let all the line off of the spool behind the boat, then reel it in. Twist gone. No boat, send your son down the street on his bike with the line till the spool is empty, let it rest for 5 minute, then put pressure on the line with a wet sponge to add tension, while adding lubrication and not burning your finger tips.

That water trick is pure GENIUS! Also I used braid on 3 of my 4 combos and I got lazy after a while with leader and have been tying straight braid. So far I have not found issues with fish being skittish due to seeing the line, but I also fish in chocolate milk water down here in the bayous of Louisiana and that might play a part in it. I grew up next to a bait shop in rural Pennsylvania. The owner always would load up new line on his reels as you suggested, then have someone (sometimes me) run it out 50-100 yards with nothing attached to the line. He would then reel it in at a moderate speed while pinching the line between his fingers. He would do this 2-3 times, until the line was neutral. Seemed to work great. Thanks for the video!

After ya do the hot water deal, take your rod outside, and take your tag end and tie it to a tree or anything that’s stable and put your drag on about 20%, and pull the line out (with bail closed) and pull on the line (with your hand stabilizing the reel) every 20 ft or so and pull it taught five or six time, and depart this for about 50yds, and BAM no curls, absolutely NO memory! Works like a charm, no line conditioner needed. You have just removed all the memory in that line, lays flat as a board! By the way love your content Debo, you have turned me into a tackle junky! Lol Tight lines to ya! 🎣

great video. as an arborist, i tie a running bowline daily and that became my knot to tie when respooling my rods. a non cinching knot that gets tighter the more weight on it and its not bulky(also can untie no matter how tight it gets but that doesnt matter with the fishing line lol). but i never let my spools get that low to where the knot might hinder me anyway. just a matter of it being a confidence knot i guess. and i love the alberto knot, super easy and if you loop your fluoro leader, and wrap with your braid, you can visually see how good of a knot it will be

Thanks for the video. Always gives pleasure to help beginners. I just did a reel myself tonight. I started out coming off Clockwise and when I can feel a bit of line twist, I flip the spool over. Same result as yours. One thing that I do is this. When in the boat, and not catching fish, which is usual for myself, I'll put on a 1 ounce or heavier weight. Cast it out and leave the bail arm open, drive the boat slowly until I'm spooled out. Then slowly reel back in. Does this help, yes it does to a decent extent. But this doesn't help if you're not in a boat. A few Moons back, I bought a cheap spooler from EBay. Suction cup base which goes onto the kitchen counter top. Put the spool on and reel in Clockwise. It does work decent for some reason. One rule that I follow, with a spinning reel, I don't use more than 10 lb test with Mono. Fluoro, you can get by with 12 lb test. Hybrid, it depends on the brand. Yozuri is decent. One Hybrid line, Fluoro coated that I use now that I found it is, P Line. I'll swear by it any day. On more than one occasion, my supervisor at Scambella's gave me a talking to for selling out all of our P Line to customers and then requesting another large order, when apparently, I was supposed to be selling people the High End Line. Hahahaha, silly me.

Another trick I’ve used for years when spooling all my spinning reels is to drop my spool of line into a bucket of really warm/hot water and let it set for 24 hours or so before I spool my reel. Believe it or not, monofilament and fluorocarbon lines do absorb some water. So by soaking the whole spool in hot water before spooling eliminates the line memory and most, if not all of the twists and tangles!

Thanks again DEBO. It's that dead-o-winter time here in Ohio too. Edges of lakes have unsafe ice. Rivers and creeks are running high and muddy. It's time to either drive south for some Florida feeshing, or get organized for early springtime. (Maybe I'll do both?) I'm gonna have a few feeshing buddies come over to the garage, have a few beers, put new line on our reels and start making some plans for 2020 river trips. I find that (when possible) having another human hold some tension on the spool while putting new line on is a big help. What I learned today: 1- Switch some of my reels to braided line. I've resisted making that change so far because I'm not crazy about tying leaders on, but it's time to give it a try. 2- Other guys' wives buy weird, smelly soaps too. (Currently, my wife has some pear scented goo in the pump bottle in our bathroom) 3- Hot H2O on new monofilament might help erase the old memory. It's certainly worth a try. Thanks for all of your excellent video! Spring *is* coming, brother.....

The best way I've found to avoid getting a a bird's nest and having line pop off is take the biggest sinker you have, or even go buy one that's quite large and go to a river, lake, field, dirt road doesn't matter. Cast it as far as you possibly can a couple times. The line then sits on the reel properly and you'll never have a issue again with line messing up

The hot water trick is something I don’t remember seeing before. The line twist issue with spinning reels is gone on forever. I learned trout fishing using two-pound line on ultralight spinning tackle some line brands work better than others do. If you prefer using monofilament to save money and keep things simple, you can find supple line that works well. Braid is a sure way to cure the problem however; using leaders makes braid more trouble than it is worth sometimes, if you are retying after every fish. Spinning reels often work better with one diameter line than another because of the speed of their oscillating spool. If you are fishing and notice, the line on the spool looks like a doughnut or is not level on the spool that is a sign the reel is not compatible with the line diameter. If it is the case, your line likely will not last as long and you will get more wind knots and shorter casting distance. Few anglers notice this issue because they are not aware of it is happening. Something that really saves line is a line counter.

Yeah, I saw it on an old Bill Dance episode somewhere. Yes, leaders can be a pain but I'm a firm believer in them. Couple that with braid and you get the best of both worlds!

@@DEBOSFishing I use them too, just not with 2-pound line. You need to try using two-pound line next time you go trout fishing on a small stream. It is not easy tying perfect knots in such small line. Using it will double the trout you catch.

Debo, great video today with a lot of good info. I have one of those spooling gadgets and it does the trick. I have gone to braid on almost all of my reels for the same reasons you mentioned. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the day you hit 100k subs!

I have been using the KVD Line and Lure for a couple of years and it works really well. I usually put it on the night before i go fishing. Then I put some more on there after I get back. I also started using a mono backing with braid and a leader on my spinning reels a few years ago.👊👍

I went to braid on my spinning reel this past season (but kinda late). I think I went a little TOO LOW on the lb test though. I might replace my 10lb with 15/20lb and a 10lb/12lb mono or fluoro leader. I am not a big finesse fisherman, but I want to learn a lot more and get good at it this year for times when they just don't want to bite anything else. Good vid dude!

Depends on the line. I use 10-15lb braid for small finesse stuff (ned, drop, shaky).

you are really good explaining dynamics of shooting fixing line to spincast reel. I learned some excellent steps in proper techniques. i know more how to avoid line twist/memory. The leader step for braided line is unique. i have to try that, my biggest difficulty with braid was cutting line to change lures.

I use one of those spooling stations that spin as you spool the reel, it does help with the initial spooling, but I think the nature of spinning reels will induce some line twist as they are used. Once you cast out, and start reeling in, the line that's out doesn't twist nearly as much in the same direction as line going back on the spool, but the incident is so small, that hundreds of cast can be made before line twist becomes an issue. I'm sure the use of barrel swivels helps a small amount, when they aren't clogged with algae, haha. I prefer braid, and I like straight braid because most of the waters I fish usually have some tint to them, but when the water is abnormally clear, or when I fish for stocked trout, I then use a mono or copolymer leader on my spinning reels.

Agreed. The mechanics of a spinning reel are bound to introduce line twist at some point. That's why I like the braid. I seem to have very little issues with twist on most lures. Thanks for watching, Russell!
