Let's talk about fake boxes some more. I've received fake boxes that already addressed the paint cracking at the corners and the gloss level. It's becoming very challenging to tell especially if you aren't OCD like me. It's really getting down to looking at the font, the size of the text, the positioning of the text, and of course, the over-saturated colors. Some repros have a mixture of scanned box elements blended with Paintshop additions/fixes. Also, some original boxes are textured, such as The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time with it's raised/relief print title and sword/shield, and Turok 2 Seeds of Evil with its printed dinosaur skin texture on the front of the box. I've never seen a repro with such textures. Another telltale sign is the gold ink used for the Official Nintendo Seal of Approval on repros, which tends to lack the metallic sheen that's found on the originals. Lastly, some original boxes have different gloss levels on different areas of the box. Again, with Turok 2 Seeds of Evil, the screenshots from the game are noticeably glossier than the surrounding yellowish background.

I have a question: One of my original games in particular Faxanadu from the NES is very old and the box and manual are broken. So I want to recreate my own box and manual for my collection with the exact type of papers. Do you know which type of paper original uses? I only know that original have mate finishes on the labels and most part of rhe boxes, because Fake ones like the video seems to use photography paper glossy. The boxes are a paper pasted on a thick cardboard? The manual are folkote in the portrait and light couche in the content? the labels are photography paper mate ? please help me with this details, thank you in advance

This may sound silly... but the first thing I do when I get a boxed game in the mail is, open it up and smell it! Every single one I have from the 90's has this musty old cardboard aroma... Every brand new thing you buy that comes in a cardboard box never smells musty. I'm sure there's someone working on the spray-on aroma compound as I type but I'll be double dog gone if they've cracked it yet.

Counterfeit plastic products of any kind usually have poor pigmentation in the plastic as well. It will be slightly translucent with a glossy texture. A quality plastic will have rich pigmentation and a sharp, well defined texture. Rich pigmentation is more expensive and the shiny texture is caused by using the same injection mold too many times. Fakes are usually made as cheaply as possible and it shows.

I have a practice of when I'm buying a physical game I always buy 2, one to play and one to put away. I've been doing this since the NES days. I literally have hundreds of sealed NES, SNES, N64 etc. games. The point of this is, I tried to sell a sealed copy of an NES game a few months ago and the dude turned it down because it looked "too new".

There's another way you can tell to look at the front of the game the Armageddon letters on the original one it's more smaller on the fake one it's more bigger and closer

*TIP* Another great way to tell with the boxes is most repros are photocopies of real ones so they'll literally have creases and bend marks on completely flat surfaces telling you it's a picture instead of actual wear. Also, you'll sometimes see the sides of box is partially folding over onto another (Ex: Most N64 boxes have 4 distinct colors on them with one color representing each narrow side. If you see the distinct color of one side partially on another near the edges it's not legit and the folds aren't quite in the right spots when the reprop box was printed.) A sign of a real box is that most boxes don't have removable trays to store the cartridge but do have folds inside the box itself the cartridge snugly fits into. Hope this can help a little along with the excellent advice given in this vid.

Hi, im actually looking to buy some of those beautifull game that i have in my heart. It is ALL we have to check to be sure its a real box ? Because im buying on ebay, and i can only watch some pictures of the item .. Also i dont see those stamped number that you talk at 2:21 on the card im actually looking at... Good points. The BEST way to know if your box at least. Is fake, is the breaks in thoe photocopy like he said. And the golden nintendo ceal, if its like a brown solid color its fake. Reflective. Golden changing color. Authentic

Also. This a 100% to call out all the fakes in game shops that are sus cheap for the quailty. All N64 game boxes have little notches in the top corners of the flaps on each end of the box.... The fake ones will have no notches at all. Same on snes boxes. Recently called a dude out here in Ha at retro game store for this. Got banned from the stkre3

I don’t mind owning repo but I do want to know if it’s the same exact game. I miss playing the n64 version of worms vs the computer game. I just want to play the n64 version without paying $200. Would repo be good for this?

Yep! Repros are the exact same game as the original. The only difference is how and when the cartridge itself was produced, the actual game ROM is the same.

if fake ones uses photography adhesive paper, which type of paper does original ones uses?? I want to make a original box for one of my games because it got broken... So i need to know what kind of papers i must buy for label, box and manual. if someone knows exact materials please tell me!

If you have had your games any longer than 5 years then they're almost certainly real. Repro boxes have been around for longer but they were pretty poorly made and easily spotted. It's really over the last couple of years that they seem to have improved big time. I'm pretty sure they can make them much better than the one shown in the video now a days unfortunately.

@@doom1067 For me the best way to tell if something is real is if it doesn't look obviously fake, and if it's selling for really cheap compete in box with inserts. The only chance its repro then is if someone else bought it way back and didn't realize it was fake. Otherwise, there's no way someone would put all the effort of doing all the inserts, box, cartridge, for like $20 on different eBay accounts (unless it's really commonly listed maybe)

what does it matter if they are fake, if you can barely see it? aslong as you dont have to overpay for the reproductions one it is fine in my opinion, or the prices of authentic boxes should just drop since they can easily be reproduced nowadays.

Making fake copies is a good thing. Why ? Because some people just want to play and not to collect. There will come the time that repro cartridges will be rare to find and at high value. You have the choice of what you buy. Today, the so called "fakes" look better and play the same as the originals.

@@carloscabrera5311 Imo they absolutely do not look better. Fake is ok if it specifies it on the box, if it doesn't and it gets sold for the same price as an OEM box then it's fraudulent. If people want to play on original hardware then they want original hardware. if you don't why not just use a raspberry pi or an emulator ? it's cheaper. What's the point of a fake anything?
