NOTE TO VIEWERS: If you need to ask Marilyn Hawes a question or for some free support documents, you can contact her here: marilyn.hawes@freedon-abuse.org
(NOTE TO VIEWERS: At 3.00 a tweet from Patrick says that educators are mandated reporters of child abuse. They are in Drake, Saskatchewan where Patrick lives - but not in the UK (Excluding Northern Ireland). In the home nations we have ‘discretionary reporting.’)
We explore a very sensitive issue that many, particularly the parents amongst us, don’t like to think about. There are currently over 57,000 children identified as needing protection from abuse here in the UK, yet still there is little to no adequate training for spotting the signs and behaviours and preventing abuse before it is too late.
Founder of Enough Abuse UK, Marilyn Hawes openly speaks about how her three sons were sexually abused by their Headmaster, who was also Marilyn’s boss and best friend and the massive impact that had on her mental health when she found out. Then Marilyn gives some key points from the training programme that she delivers up and down the country. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, sibling or friend - what Marilyn teaches is vital for keeping our younger generations safe and free from abuse.
The Chrissy B Show airs on SKY 203 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10pm in our cosy living room studio in the heart of London.

If a judge lets a man off with a fine for abusing three boys for most of their lives , someone should look to that judge as being one too .. my god ..do the right thing judges or lose your job ..common sense tells me and should tell the rest of you .. a judge has a duty to educate himself on how devastating it is for a child who will be scared for life. We need some guidelines that send a clear message to anyone even considering harming a child in this way .. 20 yrs in jail might help deter them from harming children again .. we call ourselves a civilized society ..but we dont protect our own children ???

My now adult son has multiple disabilities, he couldn't speak very much when he was little. I had a former Lutheran Priest who took a special interest in my son, after my husband left us. At first, I felt that it was completely harmless, but one day I just had a feeling, I did not stick around long enough in that Church for a few reasons, but that day, that I had that feeling, was the last time I allowed my son around that man alone. I am a severe abuse survivor. I didn't want to project this onto this man, but regardless, I was not taking any chances, these predators are EVERYWHERE, and years later I heard others who also felt weird around this priest with their children as well. MANY men prey on single mothers with children. My son's inability to communicate made him a very easy target whether anything happened or not was not important. I felt better safe than sorry was the best mind set to implement.

@@lindagrizlby9708 And you would be de-benched rather quickly in this country, as well as face possible charges of your own. The judiciary is tied down by sentencing laws that the people passed through the legislature. Federal sentencing law is quite restrictive- The judge has to follow the federal sentencing guidelines and these federal guidelines pretty much have an exact answer for just about every conceivable set of circumstances for any given crime. At the state level, each state has a similar set of procedures that the trial judge has to follow, otherwise, the appellate courts will reduce the sentence. Rather, the only thing a judge really has much discretion on is how the law should be interpreted- and even then the trial judges are limited by the rulings that the higher courts have already handed down in the past.

Absolutely everything she said is true. When I found out my ex boyfriend was abusing my daughter sexually, everything from the past just clicked. I remember writing pages of weird incidents that I had to give the police and felt like a terrible mother for not knowing. My daughter was 4 and she told me a lot of things he did to her. Saying how he would kill me or cut her into tiny pieces with a sword. She told me he drew a picture of himself holding a knife and he drew her cut up into pieces with blood. 4 year old kids don’t create these sexual exploitation’s out of nowhere. She told me he constantly gave her medicine to make her sleepy and he would let his friends touch her. All of this happening at night while I was sleeping. I can to stress enough about how everything this woman has said is completely true. I am hyper vigilant, but i I never seen it coming. We are scarred but I refuse to let this be our ending. And even if the accused does remember what they were doing at a given time that would prove them innocent, most judges would not allow such evidence to be admitted in court in the name of "getting tough on crime", and they don't give a rat's rear end what the FACTS are.

Excellent comment about getting the right therapy. Psychologists and Counsellors have kept people stuck in the past, sometimes due to ignorance and sometimes just to line their pockets. If you are seeing a therapist for more than a year and are not living better, do yourself a favour and find someone who gets results. Therapy should not go on for years and years. I worked in mental health for 20 years and saw this again and again. In my opinion, it’s another form of abuse to keep people reliving trauma and not giving them the treatment and skills to move on with their life.

Children need to be empowered concerning their own bodies and personal space. Get them used to being able to name their own body parts, all of them, even when they seem too young for this. If they can understand "this is my nose", "this is my elbow", etc. you can teach them about comfort around personal space, even people sitting too close. Also, tell the child that they are allowed to say no to anyone, including adults and authority figures, if that person makes any part of that child's body feel uncomfortable. Constant touching of the child's arms, legs, face, head, too much hugging, etc. are violations of personal space. Tell your child it's ok to say no to anyone who wants to touch them too much, even if it's just their arms. You can even tell your child that you, their parent, give them permission to "talk back" or "say no" to anyone who is touching them too much. Teach them safe and empowered ways to speak and name even when you're not there. If you teach them to speak and name, they will continue to be empowered to speak and name.

I suffered two kinds of abuse as a child. One of my stepfathers was a pedophile and our sexual relationship began when I was about eight years old. The worst abuse came from my mother who had a violent temper and when she targeted anyone with verbal abuse she wanted to say the most hurtful things which can be said. No one would excuse the pedophile. But make excuses for a woman who verbally abuses her children? Many people do. "She's a woman." That was enough to get her a pass - her gender. "She's having a bad day". She knew just how to be thoroughly charming to adults and she was quite attractive. We hear a lot about the male abusers, pedophiles. My guess is that the amount of damage done by women to their children - because those women have never grown up emotionally - has got to be so big as to be almost inestimable. The damage done by the pedophile has never been addressed significantly because I have spent my life, and I am 70 years old now, trying to get over the abuse my mother did.

We need to incorporate it into the school curriculum. It's still something very much taboo and we need to take the power away from the abusers and give it back to the children. We do this with education. Time and time again, you hear that children don't realise the abuse is wrong until they have sex education. By this time, the abuse could of been going on for years. And then the victim is still afraid to disclose because they have been threatened, bullied. So we need to pull the rug out from underneath the abuser. We blanket the parks, pubs, supermarkets, churches, mosques, libraries, sports centers, buses, trains, taxis. We put adverts on prime time and we teach. Not Just once but all the way up to 16. Compulsory. And then we need to make the laws tighter. No more slaps on the wrists. Whole life terms the first time they are caught, tried and convicted. This needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. No one can say my approach will not work, because it hasn't been tested.

Unfortunately - the priorities of day care, pre-K and grammar school systems are not that of child safety as far as sexual abuse. The focus is on recycling, any type of climate change, same sex couples, same sex attraction, gender issues, transsexuality, every body should be friends, must share, etc. Although the bullying issue has been addressed and even physical abuse has been touched on, and rightly so, they still do not want to deal with the sexual abuse of infants, children and teens. We all have allowed this to happen, so much so that the next extreme push is for the acceptance of just what you see here. The acceptance that it is ok for this to happen, that is normal for an adult and even another child to do this. The whole "these are your private areas and" - what follows? Only mom and dad or the doctor can touch etc.. Unfortunately those persons can be the ones hurting the children. If the curricula in all places that take care of children or teach them, whether private or public, would put this at the top of the list, we can have a fighting chance for them. Social media is disgustingly being used for the exploitation of children. Even one of the giants of short messages refused to remove images or comments because he called them art..yeah right. We see recently the deletion of a certain celebrity's messages to the count of 60k due to the disgusting sexual references made. The account was not removed, the person made it private and either removed persons or blocked them. Makes you wonder who those many closed friends are. Movies, tv shows, commercials all have contributed to sexual exploitation of minors. The music industry as well. Anyone see the 1/2 time show of Super Bowl with Jlo doing the stripper pole work with children around including her daughter..she was so proud of that. What are children listening to in your car? In your home? What music are you playing? What "kid" movies are they watching? Children are watching cute little movies in the theater or on dvd that are filled with all kinds of sexual innuendos FOR YEARS! and they are getting bolder with their message!! It is a huge fight, it is a big fight that must be fought...there are more of us who want our children of every age safe than there are of them. Open your eyes, ears, listen to your gut or as I call it spidey sense, pedodar, what ever you want to call it. And pay attention to what they watch..read reviews for "G" or "Family" movies that are not written by paid movie goer bloggers or critics but by true family organizations, including Christian ones because they alert the parent before going to the theater or renting a movie...remember the movie Shrek? I was horrified when the scene with the evil king or prince showed him putting his hand under the cover while looking at a picture of the princess -his face changed, the tone of voice even! How many molesters/abusers used that??? It is every where, but so are we.

We need people like this lady here in the States; it was very uncomfortable to watch, but necessary to see the signs of these creepy entities trying to hurt our children. In this age and time AND technology, we should be a more ADVANCED people, but it seems we get behind more and these creeps know it. Too many men abandoning their children to their fate, mothers that are broken and just wanting someone to "love" them w/o REALLY seeing what they do to their children. These creeps THRIVE on the vulnerability of the mother to get to the child/children. I met these acquaintances(they are cousins) years ago, sexual abuse is RAMPANT in their family. Their parent's abuse came at the hand of the step father; the mother KNEW what he was doing to her children, but it was way more 'important' for her to have a male in the house that, she didn't care what happened, so long as he stayed w/her... to boot, he also cheated on her--young ladies, this is what "DESPERATION" looks like and in my opinion, a woman like her should have just given her children to an orphanage, they would've fared better. The abuse went on for YEARS! The males, in turn, began to abuse their own children and nieces and nephews. Thank God, these two broke free by accepting Jesus into their lives and they each, protecting their daughters from the same trauma. They broke the chain; yet, a lot of their other family members, still suffer this way. One of them was able to put her father in prison as she saw how he had groomed some relative's little girl, he was going to do his putrid thing to her and she caught him and called the cops. Her family was furious at her and stopped talking to her... she later told me she felt bad for making her family angry at her. I assured her she did them most important thing: she SAVED a child's life!!!!

My twin girls when they were seven years old were molested by a 16-year-old neighbor boy on a play date with his mom and seven-year-old brother. I had an intuition about the teen boy and thus had his mother assure me he wouldn’t be home while my girls were there. Little did I know the mom was in on it all and had already set up another little girl in the neighborhood to be abused several times by her teen son. Luckily, my girls were not penetrated, but what was done to them caused them to lose their innocence, and they never giggled again. They used to giggle often. We all went through therapy, and it helped, but both still have effects they suffer to even now at age 40. I couldn’t forgive myself. It’s been 33 years and I’m old now. I still cannot forgive me. Hi Sherry. So sorry to hear what happened to your family. What happened to your girls isn't your fault. Humans tend to trust and it's only in hind sight we realise certain things. We learn through mistakes and experiences. If you don't mind us saying, it's time to forgive yourself. When Jesus taught us to forgive, it certainly included ourselves too. Guess He knew that we tend to beat ourselves up and feel so guilty about things. You don't need to carry this hurt and pain anymore. It won't help or change anything. Be at peace...

Piere Litbarski a similar thing happened twice to me as a child with different neighbors. It’s was awful, so traumatic, but it was even more traumatic the fact that when I told my mother she never did anything. In her mind she was afraid that if my father found out he would kill the individuals. This is why when I divorced 10 yrs ago and my two daughters were still young, I decided not date nor have any male friends. I completely devoted my life to them, to keep my two loves, safe from any risk. I was extremely overprotective. I never allowed sleepovers nor any wondering around outside without my supervision. I made sure I took them to school myself before heading to work in the mornings, and I was fortunate enough to be able to pick them up from school afterwards and bring them to the office with me till the end of my shift. Now days my daughters are adults and I am the grandmother of two beautiful boys and constantly fear for them too.

I was at the park and there were some street performers so a crowed gatherer around me and my kiddo. A man and a boy about 7 stood next to us and I could not tell if the man was his dad or an uncle of his. I just noticed he was super hands on with the boy and the boy seemed so uncomfortable and annoyed or intimidated by him that it made me feel uneasy. I also noticed that when they were sanding, he kinda pulled the boy to stand real close up agains his body. The man seemed energetic kept talking to him a lot and the boy seemed closed up. Looking back I feel guilty I didnt ask the man if that was his son or what but there were other kids around and Idk how to approach it and I also wasn’t sure if I was reading too much into it or not :( I feel bad now :(

Listen to that gut... next time obey it. Dont try to logicize it away. The only way to learn to obey your still small voice us to neglect it.. and learn from the regret. Dont feel guilty!!! its just a lesson you needed to learn about following your gut. And don't ever let anyone make you feel in the wrong for simply questioning. Watching and being concerned. 💗

This by far the best and most informative explanation of grooming I have ever seen. I am a 75 year old female who is still trying to understand what was done to me. Thank you for sharing and giving me a piece of my puzzle that was missing. I had one wonderful therapist, ten years ago, who taught me how to move forward. She has retired and I am still looking for another. But you have also helped me know what kind of person to look for.

When I was a kid i was taking the subway home from school one day and a fat old Indian man sat down beside me and put his arm around me and started asking casual questions which turned into trying to get me to come to his van at my subway stop. I was young and taught to be polite to adults and do everything adults tell me or else I would get yelled at. I was smart enough to escape when I had a chance at my stop but I remember sitting on the subway with people all around wondering what was happening to me and why other people were acting normal while I was processing the situation i didn't really understand fully at the time. Be careful of what you teach your children about obeying adults, it came close to getting 11 yr old me snatched.

Thank you for describing the need to " deal with the now " trauma therapy, and how the therapist speaks to the amygdala in the brain. We need to get beyond the blocks within...your descriptions and testimony are so crucial. I feel terrible about an event I will describe. I walked into a car parts store some years ago. An adorable little girl, in the middle of summer, was dressed in her Sunday best. Her hair was all braided and full of hair clips. She looked like she was going to a party. It was early in the day. I often smile at children. I held my purchase in my hand and smiled at her. A man was with her, he was requesting a car part over the counter. The little girl began to cry. I was shocked. The man looked down at her and said, in a stranger danger kind of voice, *what's going on? Barney's not here. Why are you crying when Barney's not here" I wish you could hear my rendition of his caracatured cartoon voice. I have to this day some twenty years hence never forgotten this young girl. Immediately , as a mother, my reaction was fear for this child. Looking back I should have called the police to check him out. To check her out. It wasn't a normal exchange. She was way overdressed, looking so pretty. And some ugly Barney ( we had a purple Barney on tv at the time. ) frightened and made her cry. What should I have done? It was before I owned a cell phone. Today I would get the plate number, get a picture and call police. We need ways to protect children. Thank you for being courageous and sharing your story. From the USA

Shocking story. Poor lady poor family. I hope the husband takes a good close look at himself. As a father, the law makers need to realise this lady reacted in an extreme way, she followed the law. Most men who are not abusers wouldn’t have her courage. I would take justice into my own hands and end up in prison. Poor lady she may be constantly blaming herself and never escape the abuse but she is doing something important for us all.

So true - I still remember when I was so young and learning to talk and the young lady looking after me was abusing me and doing so in front of her friend and she was telling her how I was safe as not able to talk yet - others followed over years - friends, child minders, adult party mates of my parents and for my cousins a great uncle also abused them and they and I were made to feel guilty for what happened to them and I - anyone who covers or makes excuses for this is as bad as the abusers and are just as guilty as abusers - even today many in family will not face the truth or make light of it or say I got it wrong - I have done all I can to protect my own children as they grew up yet just once trust I had in another child may of cost my children when his older brother visited and cops would not listen because kids were so young and person never been in trouble for this sort of stuff in past yet rap sheet 44 pages long I told later...listen to your children and look for the signs....

I can vouch for the teeth grinding. I still find it hard to stop that and I remember having panic attacks as young as 5, I'm now 50. I don't speak to my mother as she still cannot see any problems with anyone but me, yet it was her failure of duty of care, that made me a loner and a target for every pederphile on the block and at that damned parents without partners group. This woman is a good mum, acknowledging that her sons were abused yet it took two court sessions to wake her up, which is sad 😔

Thank you for using your platform to bring awareness to this sickening blight on humanity. Those of us who are adults must be educated and not be hesitant to help if we are made aware of something going on. We also have a duty to children both ours and those in our communities to help protect them from monsters. It is vital to remember that these monsters can look like average clean cut people. Also if we are aware of something happening and we do nothing about it, we assist in allowing the cycle to continue. Full stop.

This should be done in every school. Appropriate to the age of the child. My stepfather did this to me I remember the first time I don't remember I'm not going to go into detail but I remember asking does mommy do this and the answer was yes that's all I remember. It is so important to talk about this in school like the police come to the school and talked about say no to drugs. This is as important and more importance. Especially if the abuse goes on 4 years and they say why don't children tell because the child feels that they did something wrong that it's their fault. This woman is amazing. And we moved a lot I don't know if people knew something was going on or our house was dysfunctional but no one ever said anything I know there had to have been signs but I was too afraid I didn't trust adults they took me away from my mommy and put me in foster homes and as a little girl you do not want to be taken away from your mother unless you've been through this you have no idea no idea. I am 58 years old woman. I have been in therapy with the same therapist for over 20 years it's like peeling an onion and when you think you're done and you can deal with it something else pops up it remains with you and the rest of your life. This was so hard get out myself like this but it was not my fault I did nothing wrong. And at one time I wanted to have this person prosecuted and you know what the police told me first they didn't believe me then when they did believe me they told me the statues of limitations was up

So important! What is amazing with children, is how hard they try to get bullies to like them! I tried to teach bullied children to look for all the friends they have that do not abuse them. Collect non abusive friends! Fall out of "love" with abusive people. You can choose who you want to be close to you. You can choose who not to be close to you. As a child two girls invited me over, always to be brunt of a cruel joke. It was tremendously traumatic. I told my loyal best friend what they were doing to me. When they came over my friend, and her brothers excluded them from our games. They were all abused by both parents. I couldn't do anything about it. Fortunately, they could help me. I still love them for being supportive.
