Spray paint your cars trim using aerosol spray cans. Spray paint your trim so it is dark black. Does your car have faded trim like on my Mazda b3000 Ford Ranger pickup truck? If you watch this video you will learn how to prep your car for spray painting with a typical paint can and learn how to spray properly without using any special equipment. I really like how nice it came out! Comment below and let me know what you think. Also "like" the video if it was helpful!

It's awesome to see how you became so professional in your videos. I'm not saying this video is bad at all, but now your voice, camera quality, transitions, speech... It's everything so professional and it shows that you've grown a lot without giving up your roots (driveway and common tools). I hope you can still do this for years, as long as you want because you're someone to trust and a really good place to learn while being entertained.

+James Mallia, I used black/gray primer because if the paint gets scratched down to the primer, you wont see the primer easily. If you use red, and you get a scratch, red will show easily against black paint.

I see a few comments on here criticizing the paint job. The truth is, these videos that he does are for people who don't necessarily have a paint booth, an air compressor, a spray gun and all of the tools that a body shop would have. Why? Because it helps those who don't have these things or the money to make their crappy cars (myself included) look less crappy. If you have better tools you can use, by all means, do a better job and make videos. Why bust this guy's chops for trying to teach someone something new? And yes, I know this video is from 2013. It just irritates the hell out of me when people have nothing better to do with their time than nitpick. I do have one question Chris... Would clear coating help in any way with the durability or look of the finished product?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 7 жыл бұрын
+thejudgemeister thanks man! Clear coat would help with durability but the black paint I used is pretty good without clear coat.m since it's bumper paint. It still looks great!

THIS is a homemade paint job, and the steps are correct. The emphasis I gave heard from Chris several times on PREPARATION are spot on, pro tips. This is a driveway job done right, except for the over spray which is compound then clay on paint, and steel wool and clay on glass. Chris makes excellent videos and informed decisions. ( Exept for the door gap. It should be papered from both sides in the gap to control over spray )

I need your advice. See I have a 1995 saturn sl1 4 door sedan...your gona have to google it because I have a very small trim size than yours so you can see for yourself. I have the same exact problem you have only a little worse. I have rust on the black door trim itself. I mean you can see very small black paint spots from how it looked back in the day only the majority of the trim is just outline with rust. Looks like a rusted door trim mixed with spots of black paint that held up pretty good in that one spot. What are the steps to get that door trim back the way it was? How much grit sand paper? I need your help. Thanks.

+Dave S. If you have rust, start with a grittier sandpaper like 400, 200 if it's really bad. Then use a primer specifically for rust. If you have the trim like Chris does, I would remove it so you have more area to work with.

Clear-coat does come in a spray can. As for your whaler, it is probably not a clear coat. Most boats are fiberglass with a gel-coat finish. I dont know how bad the finish is, but most of the time a buffer, some polish, some wax, and a lot of elbow grease can get that hull looking like new. I love whalers, such great boats!

D.P.T. Hey, if anyone puts up a video purporting to teach some skill etc then expect to get both positive and negative feedback. If you can take criticism or you are too sensitive to handle comments you don’t like then don’t put yourself out there as an expert. Apparently In your world only those who agree with you are permitted to speak up. Go live in North Korea where that kind of sentiment is highly valued or embrace freedom of speech and stop whining.

Love the videos man. You do a really good job. There's something you should try when using spray paint to make it come out less streaky and more even. Get a bucket or bowl of really hot water and let your cans sit in it for around 5-10 min. Then when you spray it comes out really fine and more even

***** It is just the video. The paint looks smooth and consistent in person. Maybe it is the angle of the light while the paint was drying? The paint was not completely dry (just to the touch) in this video. After a few days, it blended perfectly.

any polish or rubbing compound will also do the job.

This is the subject I was looking for............ The answer us just as relevant to the masking tape adhesive. Use NO CHEMICALS on the paint. Clay bar is made exactly for over spray. Rubbing compound also takes it off well. I thought of your approach in this context. We painted a Porsche Panamera fender. The over spray was amazing, about the size of a basketball. There is absolutely no way you will ever get that much over spray off correctly with acetone or another chemical and not ruin the paint in some manner. Then you only have to respray a 60 day old, $150,000 Porsche. Good luck. Clay bar saved us from botching up a $5000 fender paint job. Clay and compound is all we used.

If the weather stripping is torn already,can something be done to fix it? Like maybe use a gasket sealer and squeeze a bead out and wipe it down smooth. If that makes sense

3m tape that he used is actually what's used in the auto industry. Painters tape is intended for home latex paints as it is less sticky and won't pull off the latex paint it's stick too.

Chris, I appreciate your videos. Many great ideas to maintain ones vehicle. Three years ago you repainted the trim on your Mazda pickup. My weather strip shrunk from years in Arizona and the clips don't hold. Any idea where I can get replacements?

I started doing custom automotive painting back in the mid '70's painting custom vans in Anaheim and we did 3 vans a day and after one of our painters moved to our new facility in the Bay area I cleared coated the 3 vans and had to keep it wet without running it and in 10 months never had a run in the clear and one morning there it was, my first run and made the mistake of wet sanding it and buffing it out and after that we had to wet sand anything that left the shop because of the mirror finish it left.I've done trim in a textured finish that looks awesome when done evenly and I set the texture standards back in the '80's in the computer industry at KeyTronics Corp in Spokane and have done a lot of custom motorcycle painting in So Cal and still like to grab one of my old Devilbiss spray guns just to keep up on the new coatings out. I even had a paint shop in the Northwest where I did Military Spec painting for the Defense Department so I know a little bit about paint and applications of it.Mr. Valspar here didn't get 'rekt' I just pointed out that the finish was less than perfect.

Thanks Chris, I want to re-paint the black (trim paint) on two of my cars, but I was unshure about how to go about it. Thank you for showing how to do it step by step, I think I dare to attempt it myself now!

Nice! I got a new (used) car that needs this so will be very useful! Also have used a lot of your videos to work on my cars! I've been watching every video since I was like 10 lol (17 now) and decided with the knowledge of your videos to get a 1974 Nova that needs a lot of work. It's been going pretty good so far! Also have a New Edge mustang and would like to make a drift car, so the drift stang videos are super useful too!

Again, such a interesting vid. When I spray paint items, no matter what, I also spay in couple of thin layers. But the final layer I sprayed slightly thicker than the layers I put on before, on this way the paint will smooth out nicely and you'll get a fine flat surface. So for example: 1 or 2 thin layers of paint. After it is dry, put the finishing coat. This coat will fill up the 'orangepeel-look' you'd made with the first 1/2. Think I will make a vid of it by myself in the near future how I'd like to do it. Ok Chris thans for the vid's, and can't wait to see you're upcomming. All the best amigo.

What I like about your tutorials is that you don't harp on the faults of the car manufacturers, It is what it is. I assume you have some sponsorship from Ford so that's cool. Sometimes you use the term "poor design" but don't harp on it. Love your vids and have used the tips on my beater car.
