A hill and soft sand are a terrible place to start sprinting. Both put the achilles on a stretch, which dramatically increases the risk of injury to that critical tendon. You need to condition your Achilles tendons over many months before attempting to do sprints up a hill or in soft sand.

Krispy Kreme is my first stop when we vacation somewhere like Myrtle Beach. We get 1 dozen for the week and then go for years remembering the soft and sweet magic.

@@C0d0ps depending on the position, it might be 5-10 seconds sprint with 5-15 seconds jog recovery, which must be maintained for a point lasting from 1 to 5 minutes. Defense is a little more tiring because you have to stay ready even when your guy looks like hes relaxing.

I like sprints or speed work at the end of my runs. That way, I'm sufficiently warmed up, and the risk of injuring something is lower.

Old school music recommendation for sprint workout: Ray Charles: What’d I Say. Opening tempo builds, then kicks in when cymbals enter at ~ 16 second mark. May not work for everyone, but perfect for this guy. Be careful, this jam may prompt you to run out of your shoes!

Great tips and advice thanks guys. I was training for a triathlon a few years ago and added some sprints to my running training and ended up with a stress fracture in my leg, I wish I had this advice back then as my sprints were too long too soon! Have been afraid to do them ever since but will try again building up slowly thanks 👍

Butt kicks and high knee raises for warm ups before sprinting always. Shoveling snow was a great source of income as a kid.

I'm middle aged. And I spring barefoot. There is large green spaces near my house. But I've been going barefoot my whole life. And I also have strong, flexible feet and ankles from early experience with soccer combined with three decades of hackysack. Barefoot shoes are nice and I own some. But going entirely barefoot is even better. I'd only recommend that one first simply learn how to walk barefoot. I'd also recommend stretching your feet and ankles in all directions. And there is this Chinese exercise of walking on the sides of your feet. Some of the other exercises like duck walking is great. And I agree that building calve muscles is beneficial as well. You simply want to learn to move your lower body in different ways.

It’s amazing there isn’t one mention here of ATG- simply the most commonsense system to prepare the hardware (keyword) for sprinting. For example: There are moments here when lower leg training is mentioned- you need to measurably strengthen the tiablis and both calf muscles IF ONLY to offset the above-knee weight gain. The talk about carries for pelvic tilt- doesn’t sound like a very efficient way to fix what’s ultimately a hip flexor problem; again, measurably strengthen AND lengthen the hip flexors. Oh and then there was the throwaway comment about backwards training; there’s the famous result which showed that ONLY sprinting backwards led to greater speed gains than sprinting forward. The sled has been shown to be the greatest tool to “deconstruct” the sprint. Etc.
