In this tip I show you how to square the clubface and gain more distance. So many people keep trying to hit the ball solely with their arms. In doing so, they hit the ball with the face open. This produces high fading or slicing shots.
In order to learn how to square the clubface you need to over do it and actually close the face for a few shots to get the feeling of the new release. If you close the face you will gain more distance because you will be de-lofting your clubs instead of adding loft.
Once you gain more distance you will become excited by the shots you are seeing so you will want to keep trying to square the clubface until you have this part of the swing mastered. Keep in mind you are not overdoing this forever. Once you eliminate the slice spin you learning how to use your body to hit the ball. This straightens out your shots.
So watch this tip and understand the concept. You are learning how to square the clubface first. Get this and you gain more distance. Now you will become excited but you still have to straighten out your shots. You do this with your body which I have tons on tips on the channel that show you how.

Paul Wilson is the man. I played today and on the 12th hole (wish it had been the first hole), I reminded myself to have loose wrists. I hit my 4-iron about 200 yards with a wonderful draw/hook. It wound up on the back side of the green. Felt pure and effortless. I felt exactly what Mr. Wilson is describing in this video.

Paul, I just want to say thank you. I played in my beer league with this tip yesterday. Mostly with my driver, but I hit 17 out of 18 fairways. That's great. I love hearing it. Playing pain free is great too. No one should be in pain playing golf. If they are, they are doing it wrong. To keep the arms turned off you need to be focused on the downswing trigger powering the swing. I just posted that today. Find yours. You could also do 2-3 practice swings keeping the arms super loose before each shot. This will keep you remembering the loose feeling. Also, be content with hitting the middle of the fairway. Thank you Paul for responding to my comments from another video. I love the fact that you really care about helping people get better at golf. I appreciate that! I basically did what you say a few years ago, rolling it over to close the face. I ended up becoming the worst pull hooker on the planet!! I never could time it correctly. Because of that, I went back to a more square release, which improved my scores, but decreased my distance. It doesn't help that I'm getting old (75), either. At least I'm not losing as many golf balls.... (-:
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
You need to see it how I am seeing it. You were seeing the pull hook as bad. I am jumping up and down saying to myself "he is doing half right." Because you thought that was bad you then tried to focus on squaring the face. Problem is you only have a few degrees room for error otherwise you hit it off the planet left and right. So see it differently. You have the spin (wrists) you have the direction (body). There is no sense hitting a ball with slice spin on it. If so, the face is open adding loft. It goes higher and nowhere. Hooking has you delofting it. You will hit it lower. Descending blow compressing the ball, less backswing and it will go longer. So you roll it from the top and hook ball after ball until you learn the release. At this point you have mastered half. How long does this take? When people are here working with my this is about 10 mins. Once the person hooks about 5-10 in a row I know they understand and feel how it should release. Now you have half and every ball is going left/left you need to get it on the right direction. So now you switch to the hips. You hit the top and fire the hips first. As the arms come down you FEEL the release. So you THINK hips you FEEL the release. You watch your ball. If they were pull hooking 50 yards left and you add hips and they pull hook 30 yards left it's telling you that you need even more hips. So you fire even quicker the next time. This time it's 10 yards left. So you are closer but need a little quicker hips. Now you fire super quick and you blow it 20 yards right. This is too much hips so you need to slow down. The goal is to watch your ball and dial in how much hips you need to hit it straight. If you put slice spin on it roll it again a few times to loose it back up. So use the ball as a gauge to tell you how hard you need to fire your hips. I did a tip on this here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLKjnqqqnNjZnKM.html So I guess I still have to teach everyone what to look for. I did exactly what you were doing when I was 20 years old to about 32. This got me nowhere. Once I saw it differently I got it and was able to fix my shots instantly. You can do this to.

Super lesson. I applied this technique today and hit every green in reg. I’d already gotten the hip turn down so this was the final piece of the puzzle. Before this video I was trying to release my wrist either at or just after contact. Beginning the release at the start of the downswing made all the difference. Shots were dead straight every time. I recommend making this lesson number two, right after the neutral grip. Thanks Paul.

@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
Just master the first part so then you aren't thinking about it. When you fire the body you watch your ball. Keep firing until it's straight. Memorize this feeling. Then daily you either add or subtract body. Some days you will pull a little so speed up other days you will push so slow down. The ball will tell you what to do.

Speed is such a critical component of changing your swing and, in my humble opinion, is the fundamental that ties everything he teaches together. Even though Paul has greatly improved my swing (I even got a compliment at the range yesterday about how nice my swing looked) I still suffer too often from the open face curse. I tried his tip of getting most balls to the left, or on, the target line and found myself not as successful as I had hoped. It became obvious that when I get over the ball the kill instinct becomes strong. When I made the effort to slow my tempo, the magic began to happen. Paul teaches us the body swing; we have to teach ourselves the brain swing.

Hey Paul - I hate to over-analyze some of this stuff, but please clarify your phrase "rolling it over"? Are you simply referring to the wrists doing what they naturally do, which is to cross over naturally, back and through, without consciously fanning the club face open and close? I assume this is what you're describing. I use to purposely roll the club face open and close, though that was corrected by my instructor some time ago (talk about a timing nightmare!). Thanks so much!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 10 ай бұрын
I work on the swing differently. I get half (spin) the I work on the other half (direction). So roll it means you hit the top and roll it over causing the ball to hook. You need to do this from the top. Most try to square the face at impact which will never work because there is not enough time plus when people do this they are trying to hit perfect shots in 1 step. This too will never work. Get step 1 (wrists) then get step 2 (body). So watch the tips below and start rolling it and get every ball hooking. Once you can hook 10 in a row then switch to body to straighten it out. Watch me fix a student here first: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5uCos2F3ZvXeH0.html The do this: Wrists = Spin (Step 1) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppqmdLaetODPgJs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g55ma7SkudKrpGg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r651qZp4nsCZXWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdWcddSovayXeZ8.html Body = Direction (Step 2) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLxoqLaLlpymqac.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqgm9eZqLedhoE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o552q7aLuNOvdas.html (secret tip)

Hi Paul, thanks for the video. There is a lot of videos out there that promote maintaining a square club face throughout and rotating the body through fast as rolling the wrists lead to inconsistency and requires perfect timing. I wondered what your thoughts were on this? You mention loose wrists, i worry that this will lead to cupping. do you know how to deal with this?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Why would you not want cupping. If you couldn't cup it you would have never heard of Hogan and countless other best golfers of all time. Crazy how this new swing is taking over yet none of those who are using it are dominating. Heard of Scotty Scheffler. Yeah, old school now dominating. So be careful with what is out there. I did a tip on cupping versus bowed here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7iHfJt-zdTXkWw.html If you do it my way you are rolling until you get rid of all slice spin. You are doing this purposely. Once you do you know what the ball is going to do before you hit it. Then you start switching to lower body to straighten it out. You watch your ball and it will tell you exactly how much body you need in your swing. I did a tip on it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLKjnqqqnNjZnKM.html As you get used to how hard to fire your body you completely turn off your arms so you are not hitting or helping the shot with your arms. This way you don't twist the fast and become unbelievably consistent. So I don't agree that you can't be consistent doing it my way. You just have to know what you are doing and how to teach it. I have tried their way. Kills my back.

This is because people don't know how to straighten it out. I do. Been doing this for 31+ years. Once you get it consistently hooking you remember this feeling because you need to do it without thinking about it. You are thinking about firing your lower body to start down. This is the easiest trigger: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLxoqLaLlpymqac.html If you start blowing it right got back to hooking it again and build it up again. This would be helpful too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pcWJeah6zrTcip8.html Make sure it has hook spin not just straight left.

Unfortunately, you can't lay the stick down when you play. Pick out at spot and foot to 2 feet in front of the ball that is in line with your target. Aim the face at this spot then square your body to it. This is called and intermediate target. This is what pros do. To find the spot stand behind your ball. Draw and imaginary line from the ball to the target. When you do you will see a broken tee, leaf, twig blade of grass etc. on this line. Keep looking at it as you approach the ball. Aim the face at this spot then set up. This should get you square. If you are at the range always put down the alignment stick so you know you are square. Then you will know what square looks like when you play.

@@paulwilsongolf Excellent - thank you so much! I am determined to incorporate your entire methodology into my golf game. I am committing to go to the range and hit a large bucket of balls (90 balls) using your techniques. I will be in no rush and will take my time to learn your system. I realize this may take me numerous trips to the range, but I am a very patient man and look forward to just having fun learning these new things. I will finally be able to enjoy the game of golf due to your teaching - I am convinced of that.

How do you deliberately roll the wrist over?
@paulwilsongolf

You go to the top and roll it over so the face is closed. Just watch the face out in front of you so you can see the face closed. Swing it back and forth rolling it early. So keeping it square going back and through the ball is a fallacy? That's what I have been trying to do and it's making me worse.

The swing is an arc. This is a piece. You are not going to do this forever. That's the problem. Everyone wants dead straight in 1 step. Why not get half (arm unit and the release) then work on the other half (body). 2 steps. I can't make it easier than that. You are trying to square the face at impact. This will never work because you have minimal room for error. At 250 yards including spin if the face is open to the path 1 degree you ball is 14 yards offline. So if you bring it back to say 200 yards you might have 2 degrees. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. Good luck trying to consistently square it within 2 degrees. I hit 1,000 balls a day (I counted them) every day for 2 years and didn't get it. Focus on what I am teaching. I will get you there in minutes, hours or days depending on how fast you do what I am teaching. This is step 1. Master it. Then work on body to straighten it out. You'll see.
