If you want the best looking Monstera Deliciosa you have to stake your plant. You can use a moss pole, a bamboo stake, or even a PVC pipe to stake your plant. Once you do stake your Monstera or Swiss Cheese Plant, you'll start to see better growth with larger leaves and more fenestrations.
When grown in homes, Monsteras, have the natural tendencies to grow wide until the find something to climb. Just like they do in their natural habitat. Since these plants are such voracious growers, things can get out of hand very quickly. You need a stake your plant to keep it under control.
In this video I walk you through how to stake your Monstera Deliciosa so you can grow a bigger and better plant.

For people worried about wood poles rotting, get some silicone sealant and coat the end of the stick until the soil line (and probably a little past it)! For some reason I only thought of it the other day as I've been contemplating staking some of my plants but don't like moss poles/ coco coir poles/ or plastic/metal trellises. I don't think you have to worry about it with bamboo but probably do for most untreated wooden sticks. Also, if you don't want to pay for a stick there are plenty free outside, just stick with hardwood and sanitize/sterilize them (follow sterilizing wood for reptiles).

I recently had to repot my young plant into a bigger pot as it was dying it was very droopy and when I took it out I took some of the mud of the roots and put it in a much bigger pot and moved it to a different area of my home and thankfully it is looking so well and seems to really enjoy this new area of the house. This is a great video I think I’ll have to buy it a stick or something as it is quite big so now I have some good ideas of what to buy 👍🏻

Thanks for making this video. I too don't think it's necessary to spend tons of money on factory made moss poles. I'm glad your video shows a branch for a stake. It's easy to find free things on Market Place, like a cut down tree. Instead of having it go to the dump, recycle ♻️ the branches as a pole for your plants. It gives it a natural look and saves money.

This is so informative. My daughter made a root division of her monstera and gave me 2 stems. I planted them with a pole... symmetrically. I had no idea there was a natural back and front. Why have I not heard this before ?It's definitely a wild child that I will repot. Thanks!

@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. It does depend on the plant. For some monsteras you can usually wait until you need to control their growth (they are falling over or growing too wide). Other plants, like a monstera adansonii, or a pothos you may want to stake as soon as possible if the goal is to get larger leaves. It depends on what look you want to go for.

Hi Lee, I have a couple of questions. I just bought a juvenile monstera the end of may, she's lovely and very full. She has settled in and has started to put out new growth (4 new leaves coming up!) Question 1: should I wait until the new leaves have fully emerged before I repot? Question 2: Can a moss pole be used just as support, without watering it or wetting it? Right now, I'm planning on using bamboo poles. For some reason I thought a most pole would be sturdy. Thanks, and keep up the good work!!! I like that you are personable and get right to the point!
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 2 жыл бұрын
As long as your potting medium is decently well draining and you go up an appropriate size you don't have to wait. Keep the roots healthy and your plant will be fine. Yes you can use a moss pole as just support and not worry about keeping it wet. As long as it's sturdy.

Thanks for the comment. The main reason is cost. Whether you're buying one, or buying materials to make your own its going to be much more expensive than a bamboo stake or a plank of wood. The second reason is the idea of a moss pole is supposed to be so the roots dig in for extra support, and so that your plant can get more nutrients from absorbing water through the damp moss. With the second reason, while a moss pole might offer that support, there are no rainstorms in your home and your plant really doesn't need much support to get larger leaves. Also if you keep your moss pole damp it will only be slightly better when compared to a bamboo stake. This will also require almost daily watering for most people. Moss poles can also provide an additional place for pests to hide. You may also have to take the time to direct the aerial roots into a moss pole. So, basically a lot of work for minimal payoff when compared with the alternative.

@@KillThisPlant With all that being said, I was under the impression that plants grow up stakes because of the moisture provided which is why people use moss poles. I get that organic materials can retain moisture but pvc pipes can't (and neither do those Amazon coco coir poles). Does humidity/moisture actually matter?

@@Greg1217 humidity will (almost) always be better in making tropical plants grow faster. Humidity usually makes their aerial roots grow faster too. Humidity isn't needed for many aroids to grow up a stake. They will grow up a wooden plank and send out aerial roots just the same. The advantages of using a moss pole is of the roots do dig in, you won't have to tie the plant. The plant can establish more roots and absorb water/nutrients from the pole. Which of course is better, but that is a lot of work to maintain.

Yes but your Monstera's roots might end up strangling it.

I grow my monsters on something much wider. (Not a moss pole.) Can you get large growth on a such a narrow branch!

Super useful video! ... Bought my first small monstera and learned a lot here. Question: Does the plant (well the leaves) need to face towards the (sun)light? So combined with 'away from the stake' for optimal plant hapiness? :)

The leaves and petioles will turn towards the sun regardless of where the pot is facing. It's not really a plant you need to turn to keep it growing evenly.

@@KillThisPlant Ok, I figured since the air roots are 'the back' the leaves towards the sun would give the same energy direction. I'll see how it goes. Thanks again.
