How to Start a Drawing - Blocking In Any Subject. In this drawing tutorial video, I demonstrate the actual process and thoughts I used to start a drawing of my cat and blocking in any subject. I started out with a straight-line block-in and used comparative measuring to find relationships and proportions around her face to block in the details within her face.

Great way to show us how to see proportion on a face...it is so easy to see how symmetrical features are whe you show the line measurements! Will definitely use it in the future.

Great tips! I recently listened to a podcast of an older artist who described how difficult it was for him as an artist to make a living at art. He then landed a graphic artist job to pay the bills. He said if an artist can paint portraits of people and animals, then they will be able to do commission work anytime. He said a commission would pay him immediately as opposed to relying on a gallery, where a painting might sit for months. Just thought I would share that bit of info with all of the up and coming artists out there.

He IS underrated because for some reason he's not getting the exposure he needs, he's got some great video's, and I've watched so many KZfaq posters if their video's, many are not as good as he is and has a bigger following... Need to figure out why and do something to help him... I think some of the issues is a lot of ppl don't take watercolor for art, they all want the acrylic and oils, but several of the watercolor artists are promoting the heck out of their art on FB and Instagram... I think he needs to do the same... So when you see something you really like post it on your social media accts... Maybe he will get to be noticed for his value👍

I am wanting to learn how to draw goats and their babies. Just wondered if you were able to do so. I have been looking for a tutorial. Watching how you did this cat was a great help. Thank you. I raise goats and cows. Watching you and learning from you is my downtime or a mini vacation. Your way of painting is of great help to me. I love my goats and want to paint them. The Utube is my go to place to learn.

Great explanation of the blocking in process. I use it sometimes, but I'm always interested to hear the nuts and bolts of how other artists do this. How do you like to take your measurements? The old thumbnail on the pencil trick? Dividers?

Glad it was helpful :) I usually do use the old thumbnail on the pencil [or a metal-straw or chopstick] but I'm not opposed to doing it other ways too. I currently don't have any proportional dividers. I basically keep it as simple as possible but I do know that the pencil and thumb method can be tricky so I try to double and triple-check my measurements when I have to. These days I usually only do measurements to double-check if my eye was right, I've been trying to rely more on my eye first, rather than measurement first but that's more of an intermediate-advanced way to go about it.

Thanks for your video. It is very helpfull, because I have always troubles with proportion, although my line confidence is good. And thanks for mention that it can take longer (1h or so). After 30 Minutes I thought: " I am not able to do it, although I like trigonometry" I try this on my iPad with a wooden stick (procreate). But always one or two fingers hits the surface and lets zooms or rotate the canvas, although I switch of all gesture settings. Are there any tips on how to do this on a tablet?

I've done a few on proportion :) If you draw lightly, the lines can easily be erased or will disappear over the course of the drawing. Proportion definitely applies to painting. Painting is drawing with color basically.

Cows and chickens are good too. But finding pretty goats is difficult. Goats can be like dogs, very individual personality, but totally unique. They are a group animal up to a total degree. Very smart. They can put thinking to communication. I have dogs and cats too. I am a farmer with a desire to paint my farm. Self teaching here and Utube has a lot to offer. You are good. I will learn a lot from you and thank you so much. I snuggle with a baby goat in a bale of hay and get my happiness. I want to paint this. No children just animals here.

Glad it helped! I usually just use my pencil but nowadays, I try to draw first and measure second. I try not to get too hung up on proportions anymore because it's just too tiring and annoying haha.

Megnéztem összes rajz videódat. Most már nem úgy rajzolok, hogy minden tökéletes legyen már az elejétől fogva. Tudom, hogy te inkább festeni szeretsz, de lenne néhány kérdésem. Hogyan lehet grafittal textúrákat létrehozni? Például gumitalpú vászoncipő, bőr öv fém csattal, homokos tengerpart, fák levelei ? Köszönöm szépen a válaszodat! Jó, hogy rád találtam! (hungarian)

Köszönjük, hogy megnézték a videókat! Örülök, hogy segítőkészek. A textúrák kétségkívül trükkösek és bonyolultak is lehetnek. Általában nem igazán koncentrálok a textúrára, hogy őszinte legyek. De szerintem van néhány módszer ezek létrehozására. Az első számú dolog az, hogy először az értékre összpontosítson, és hogy ennek helyes legyen. Olyan, mintha egy igazán fényvisszaverő, fémtárgyat rajzolna - ha csak azokra az értékekre összpontosít, amelyeket látsz, végül úgy néz ki, mint fényvisszaverő. Remélem, hogy van értelme. Kísérleteznék a csontok és más típusú radírok keverésével a grafit leválasztását a papírról, stb. Egy hengerelt, dagasztott radírral dolgozom, és szó szerint gördítem egy sötét területre, amelyet árnyékoltam, így érdekes textúrákat hozhat létre. Ezután adjunk hozzá még több grafitot a területekhez, stb. Remélem, hogy van értelme. Olyan sok technikát lehet használni és beépíteni - jó ötlet lenne, ha egy videót egy nap készítenék. Valószínűleg könnyebb megmutatni, mint írni. Remélem, hogy ennek mindennek van értelme - haha Google-fordítót kellett használni. Vigyázz magadra!

I hate using reference photos but that's inevitable sometimes and using this method is quite effective to enlarge or shrink a drawing... Times 2 or 3 depending what you want to do for size throughout the process...

A sketch is usually just a quicker version of a drawing - or something less serious. Drawings can be done with only graphite or only ink etc. black and white. No color needed.

I love this guy's videos but for some reason don't understand the importance of finding elsewhere on the face that "has to" line up with the width of the face? EDIT: Ok, is he doin this so he can accurately draw the cat at different sizes? Sorry for the noob Q's

It's a way of keeping all the proportions in check. So I don't make the head too long or too wide, etc.. Hope that makes sense. And yes, it does help for drawing it at different sizes - all deals with proportions.
