Good to see more beginner tutorials! Basic tutorials of building beyond just the controls are quite lacking, and this is presented just laidback-ly, great!

Uthris, I have told you this on stream, which made you very uncomfortable, for which I apologize, but I will say it again, perhaps to your dismay.... Your humility gets in the way of accurate self-perception, you are one of the greatest resources out there for folks like me, who are good at the mechanical end of this game (triggers, events, etc) but who lack the creative insight to properly structure a building protocol. THANK YOU, you are an AMAZINGLY talented creator, and a much better instructor than you like to give yourself credit for. Sorry to make you feel awkward again, but my grattitude must be expressed!

Actually, fun fact, the reason Tudor-style houses get larger towards the top is because property taxes were calculated based on the ground floor area, so making the upper floors larger made it so they had more surface without increasing the property tax.

BTW: you can now select one-meter grid size in the settings. I know I'm posting this three years after the video. Just posting this for new players.

Finally, a building tutorial series for the absolute beginner! The other ones all seem to assume that Planet Coaster isn't your first sim game. Really looking forward to future installments.

OMG! I can't thank you enough! I've been in Planet Coaster since the beginning of their beta and was then away from it for a long time. I have been back in it for a couple months now and have been saddened and frustrated by my lack of being able to create my own buildings. I LOVE what other people build and I try to be inspired by it, but I felt like i just couldn't see the objects clearly in my mind. THEN...along comes you and this video...and "gray boxing". I don't think I would have ever thought of this method, but I started doing it right along with you, going in my own direction with your instructions, and PRESTO!!!! OMG!!! Ideas started coming to me, I started changing my little building in all sorts of ways I know I would have never imagined! THANKS TO YOU! I know my first little building is ugly (so far...but I'm working with it), but that's okay! Even if its ugly right now, its going to be GREAT because you've given the tools to click here, try this, try that, change this, change that, just try something and see where it goes! I figured a good tip would be that once I get my building to a good point, if I'm still going to mess with it, I duplicate it off to the side, then keep going...if I screw it up, I have in essence a "save game" to go back to. As I said, I can't thank you enough...but again, THANK YOU! A whole new level of PlanCo is now open to me and I'm VERY EXCITED about it! PS - Liked and Subscribed :)

As a professional graphic designer (who always sketches before doing producing anything digitally), I never even thought to do preliminary building this way! I was getting so caught up (and overwhelmed) by all the detailing possibilities with buildings and not getting a whole lot done because of it. Holy shit you're talented mate. lol. Seriously, your ability to see these structures in your head before even placing a tile down is amazing by itself. The fact that you make it procedural and developed a system that not only you but others can follow to make effective and interesting buildings is something different entirely, nicely done. As someone who did a design course where I literally modelled individual props and assets for a game I had to make, but who has no idea how to blend them together such as in this game where you have each asset, but you then combine them into something knew, you using the term greyboxing literally put this into an entire new perspective. Because I forget that characters in the game don’t care about how a building looks as it gets built. And in fact they don’t care literally at all.... I have literally designed entire levels for video games, but I got to do that from creating every single item to fit how I wanted it too, not having an overhang because I’d just remove it. But this just clicked it all into place... A truly phenomenal video. I have design experience, but this game just didn’t make sense to me for a good fucking while.

Hi. I just started teh game and am trying to find my way around. How do you get the menu of items at the bottom of the screen to scroll up and down without using the mouse pointer on the slide bar? I have tried the scroll wheel and arrow keys, but they don't seem to work. I find that using the slide bar makes searching and selecting very clunky.

Great video, as much as I understand the mechanics of Planet Coaster, this "Building design theory" video has some good info. 2 years later, I never realized I can change the size of the base grid, was always under the impression that I was bound by the 4m grid.

I’m really good at making coasters as I’ve been playing for over 2 years but still can’t make buildings lol. Thanks for the help

I’m having issues going on different sides of the grid. Even when the wall is placed on the inside (which it glitches out going back and forth from 2 m back and takes a solid minute to place a wall piece just right next to another) I can’t place anything in front. So I can’t place that 1m piece in front. No matter what.

How can i select multiple parts like that? The only way i know how to do it is by dragging the mouse which doesn't always work the way i would like it to

Those simple building shapes look great as a start. More of this on the workshop would be great. Are you willing to share them?

I'm new to the game. How come when I try and build something the parts don't fit? If I want to put a roof on. The last bit of roof always has an overhang and I can never get it to sit on the edge of the wall?

Say, for example, you make a great building and you can find roof pieces to fit it. They have random roof pieces that dont match the wall sets. Most roof pieces dont have sides to them. i hate it that they set it up that way. love ur video

I'm having a problem when it comes to building a coaster station or any building for that matter, as to how to rotate the walls within a grid. I have tried every key on the keyboard and every action with the mouse and I cannot seem to get the result I want. Each tutorial I look at the person rotates the walls but does not explain how to do it. I hope you see this post and can explain to me which keys I need to press to accomplish this. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Can you do a tutorial on round roofs or buildings? I'm trying to make mushroom looking buildings but I can't figurr out how to do it 😭

Are there any build guides that take budgets into account? Sandbox builds are great and all, but when you've only got, say, a $10k loan to work with (that has to be paid back), it'd be nice to see one like this that also shows how to get the most bang-for-your-buck on decor. (Though I realize the more expensive the decorations, the greater the impact on the park.)

Three times I've tried to figure out how you set a 2 meter grid. You don't explain what to click! Some of us are BEGINNERS who don't know the controls! I gave up.

This is yet another video that proves how thoroughly bloated, convoluted, and confusing this building feature is in the game. Every single video on KZfaq that offers a tutorial demonstrates the "teacher" having to hunt down pieces that he has used over and over. Fun game, but good grief.
