It is so beautiful great job! Put cardboard down on top of the grass then put compost and soil on top of the cardboard. The grass will die and break down with the cardboard and make the garden even happier.

I did the cardboard myself when I first established my beds and it works beautifully. I did poke a few holes in the cardboard for drainage.

FYI those are not caterpillars! They are white grubs (beetles) and will eat all your plants! Also watch out for tomato worms. They look like green caterpillars with a horn.Throw them in your compost pile.

These are larvae from flower chafers. Normally they eat dead plants and roots. So actually they are good in your garden. Only when they can’t find more to eat they will eat your plants. Just throw them in your compost pile

Put cardboard or newspapers down before creating your beds to stop weeds from coming through your beds, eventually it decomposes and feeds your beds. Also get yourself a Clyde's garden planner, it's the best 6 bucks I've ever spent on our garden!!! It tell me when to plant what according to your frost dates, it also tells you all of the companion crops for each crop. It's for both summer and fall crops. It tells you distance to grow them , and how many seeds per row, and how many pounds of fruit per bed. It's a cool little calendar! You should definitely invest in Clyde's garden planner! I suggest it to everyone!!!! Lol 😂

I am greek and my grandpa used to take care of his own vegetable garden until he got sick. It was very nice to have fresh vegetables at home that naturally tasted like heaven. Here most people have their very own garden, provided they don't live in an apartment, since we are truly gifted with fertile earth and a favourable climate. Sending love from Greece!

I know this comment was made 3 years ago, but I had to reply because it made me smile. My grandpa (pappou) was from Greece and moved to the US years ago. He made his back yard his "own little piece of Greece" with a large garden complete with grape vines. He made salads and so many good meals with his veggies. Just like your grandpa, he gardened until he got sick-- diagnosed with cancer. What a nice example and memory that we get to have from our grandfathers! Much love.

Very good information in this video. Love that you guys are doing this TOGETHER; and seem really happy doing so. I feel this ongoing experience can really change lives. I live in an apartment; and so the yard is off limits. I chose to grow stuff in a raised bed that I bought from Walmart for about $100 - super simple assembly - a five year old could do it. Got 3 big bags of potting soil, 1 bag of manure, and several different packages of seeds. I don't have a lot of room and made a few mistakes; but it was very satisfying to see that those seeds (some of them were so tiny), actually took root in these cardboard starter kits. The roots grew through the bottom, and then I transplanted the whole thing. Two of the vegetables showed yellow flowers, a taller plant and one where the leaves were much closer to the soil. Got hit with a hail storm; but most everything survived. I think a critter, possibly a squirrel ate the leafy stuff from one of the plants; but can't be sure. And I've been taking video of the process; even if I don't upload to my own KZfaq channel; I'll have it as a record of what I've done, what worked and didn't. My biggest issue at the moment; is to know just WHEN to harvest anything. Seems that all of the seeds that I picked were good to plant in May to June or something. But just by looking, I have no idea when to harvest. Since I forgot to label them; I hardly know what the 8 different things I planted are, just by looking at the stems and leaves. But I believe I know what the carrots are and those flowered plants, I'm assuming are both zucchini and cucumber; though I don't know which is which. It's exciting to learn what I can. To me, the advent of the digital age, and KZfaq in particular has become priceless... allowing me to discover things I could only dream of before this revolution hit. I subscribed. And best of luck to all your future endeavors! 😎

I want to start a vegetable garden once my husband and I buy a house. It won't be for a while, but I've already been trying to plan things out. I love the aesthetics of garden beds, but they've just seemed like a lot of work to put together and maintain. Your video was THE MOST helpful in terms of showing us how to put together a functional, aesthetic garden bed without much work at all, and the wood can be easily taken out and replaced if anything starts to rot. So thank you!

@terripurcell2130
@terripurcell2130 4 жыл бұрын
@@lina6641 I put cardboard directly on top of the ground and then added the garden soil. I didn't flatten my cardboard, I just folded the cardboard so that it would be doubled instead of a single layer. Also if you use large cardboard and overlap then its less chance of grass or weeds growing up in between the gaps. I did this to my entire backyard two years ago and its held up.

Hey Carrie, I love following your gardening! We are getting our garden started at our new home in northern Arkansas! It's still a bit chilly currently, so we did seeds inside and will transplant them in a month. We have tomatoes, green onion, spinach, bell pepper, & jalapenos. Germinating seeds is so rewarding! A great method we use is to lay a few seeds in a damp paper towel folded over in a tightly sealed small ziplock bag. Keep it in a sunny place in your home, and within a week or so, you'll see them germinating!

Hi that’s an awesome easy and simple garden bed! To block the grass, lay carboard boxes.. or stack a bunch of boxes you have lying around from amazon orders and stuff on top of the grass and lay your bed there.. cover the boxes with your soil and you shouldn’t have to worry about the grass popping out. Also the earthworms will help break down the boxes.. you’ll get lots of earthworks this way too
@geraldphillips1533
@geraldphillips1533 Жыл бұрын
I recycle the big cardboard boxes that accumulate by removing all the shipping labels & tape. Cutting them so they can lay flat & be used as weed barriers. They will smother the grass & serve as a barrier to weed growth. Within a season they will be broken down and eaten by worms. It’s so much easier than digging out grass & weeds with tools.

Hello from Eastern Canada! We've just started veggie seeds in peat pellets indoors for the first time. It will be so rewarding to be able to eat a salad made solely from thing we grow in our garden this summer!

The one thing that worked for me that prevented weeds from growing through is cardboard. 👍I'm a beginner as well and learning from you as well 🤗 thank you for sharing your experience gardening!

Here in Michigan, our growing season will be much shorter, but I’m so excited to have a vegetable garden this year☺️ I haven’t had one since before raising my sons into the young men they are today❤️ I did not know about preferred proximity of plants to one another, so definitely need to do some research. Thanks for the great tips!

Love this video!! With only a couple inches of soil in the beds themselves, your plants roots are growing straight into the ground/grass. Have you ever had issues with this? I've never seen it done this way! Your veggies look so happy so whatever you're doing, its working!

What a wonderful video. Thanks Carrie ❤️ We live in an apartment so there's no proper garden for us. But I love collecting tips for my future dream garden. One thing I thought while watching this video was how beneficial mulch may be too your garden. Epic Gardening (the videos) have some great videos on cheap/free mulch sources if you're interested. My parents use grass clippings in their garden. You could probably do something similar!
