A willing educator. That's what I saw in Dr. Paul Kang’ethe when we were preparing for our first episode of The FarmGuide.
Daktari is a veterinary surgeon by profession who decided to pursue journalism to ensure information trickles down to farmers by teaching them agribusiness to improve their way of life.
The FarmGuide is a digital-first show that takes you through the A to Z of a particular venture that we tackle.
In this episode, we decided to take on one of the most lucrative farming ventures in Kenya. How to start and run a successful dairy farm. We cover; Types of breeds, feeds, housing, record keeping and a Swot analysis of the dairy farming business.
Dairy farming is the single largest sub sector of agriculture in Kenya. It contributes 14% of Agricultural (GDP) with an annual growth rate of 4.1%.
It is the most rapidly expanding dairy sub sector in sub-Sahara Africa with over 85% of the dairy cattle population in Eastern Africa.
According to IFAD, It is a major activity in the livestock sector and an important source of livelihood to approximately 1 million small scale farmers.

I have watched videos of some dairy farms in the U.S. and it is sad and heartless compared to the way Afrikans care for their cows. Keep up the good work and cleanliness family. I stopped drinking milk years ago once I saw a video on the milking process. The workers and the owners never cleaned the cows under belly nor the nipples and the cows were standing in 💩. That did it for me. There is a black man who left America years ago and moved to Durban S. AFRIKA. He has a small dairy farm there. On his video the cows for milking were on a clean dry surface and they washed their underbelly off before milking. I love that. When I come to Afrika I will drink milk again and not before.

Can super napier silage be a replacement to maize silage?

Maize silage us more nutritious per unit weight than super nappier. They are not alternatives. Super nappier is supplementary to maize silage.

most of this practices are copied from Western countries; maintaining Friesian cows is extremely hard sometimes operating in loss, that's why most dairy farmers sell freshly calved or about to calved why!, countries like Brazil they keep there own indeginous beef cows and they are very successful, us we threw away boranas which doesn't ask for concentrates 100 percent profit we like copying from westerners that's why we are still poor country, it's like a poor man talking a child expensive school copying the rich&by the end of day academically they compare with village schools we have been Bewitched
