**UPDATE** The knot process is correct, however In the first part of the video where I'm laying serving on a bowstring, I'm actually going in the wrong rotational direction with the serving relative to the bowstring's build rotation. I was concentrating on making the the knot illustration part of this video and just spaced it. The best explanation I've seen on how to determine which rotation you should wrap serving on any given string is found here starting at a minute and forty eight seconds on this guy's video: • How to Apply serving o...
Here's the link to the Arizona Archery Enterprises ( AAE ) website where you can get the serving jig that I use: www.arizonaarchery.com/products
If you want to cheap out, here's a link to basically the same thing a little cheaper on Amazon. (Amazon affiliate link): amzn.to/2Pm0Zsz (I'm not paid to promote any of these products, but if you buy something through an affiliate link I'll get a small commission from Amazon, doesn't cost the buyer anything extra and helps me to keep making more of these videos.)
How I start and finish a bowstring serving. The start is pretty easy, but there's a trick to finishing a serving without using an extra piece of string to pull the tail through. I've always called it backserving, not sure if that is the technical name for it, but it works for me. This technique isn't just for archers either. You can use it to securely wrap cord around any cylindrical object. It's a great way to store emergency paracord on a walking stick for example.
The AAE Pro String Server a great jig for the archer who likes to work on their own gear. With a retail price of under $20 (as of February 2013) it's a fantastic buy. I'm not getting paid to say that, I just think the product is awesome and want to throw some love out there for the folks who make it. I run mainly BCY #62 serving material on my strings. I like the way it lays down and it has proven very durable for me. I shoot thousands and thousands of arrows a year and the BCY #62 holds up really well under high volume shooting.

shouldn't you always serve on the direction that tightens the serving around the string? btw, love the demo with bigger materials.
@WheeliePete

Yes. In the video I'm spinning the tool the wrong direction for that particular string bundle. I was concentrating so much on the getting the ending illustrated I didn't realize until long after I posted the video I'd laid the serving on in the wrong direction. The easiest method to determine which direction of rotation you should lay the serving is illustrated really well by this guy's video. (Skipping to the test): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5aEeZWkspOVhYU.html

WheeliePete you spin the tool in the same direction as the string was made in.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 7 жыл бұрын
Whichever direction you are serving in, right to left, or left to right, and regardless of the string's build rotation (clockwise or counter clockwise) when you are laying serving the string twists should be getting tighter in front of the bobbin in the direction you are laying the serving. In the video I'm using the wrong rotation of the serving tool. If that string was loose in the video (but the eyes not allowed to rotate)you would see the twists in the string in the direction of travel that I am serving getting looser. If you watch that guy's video I linked to in my previous comment, his demo illustrates that perfectly.

Yes, cut it short and then melt it into wrap.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Technically you want to wrap the serving in the same direction that the bow string is twisted. Should be effectively tightening the twist in the bow string as you lay it (the serving) down.

Very much appreciated and that drawing is really good. I need to renew the serving on a crossbow string and will add some more rounds to start and end (maybe 10), but it should be pretty much the same. Cheers from Germany, where (repeating) crossbows are the only legal and most affordable option for home defense.

+Josh Barnes Thanks Josh, Hey, you might want go read the comments I just updated in the video details section. After watching this video again for the first time in a long time, I realized that I'm laying down the serving in the opposite rotation direction of what I should be. I was so caught up in trying to get a good camera angle I didn't notice my rotation. You always want to lay serving in the same rotation that would tighten the string bundles together in the direction you are laying the serving. I should be going in the opposite direction on that particular string due to the direction of the string twist.
