What if you use the strands in the core of the paracord and braid that?
@The_Mr._Biscuit
@The_Mr._Biscuit 2 жыл бұрын
This was my question. What if you just used the Paracord core as a source of nylon? Because the stretch in Paracord comes from the woven sheathing combined with not-particularly-tightly-twisted core material.

The core strands are very slippery. I've tried using them for other projects and I found them difficult to work with. Doesn't mean it won't work; could just mean I lack the skill to use it.

When I was 11 I made my a bow that was just a straight springy stick and the string was a 3 piece braid of waxed floss. I shot it a ton over the summer and eventually the bow gave out but the floss didn't. I would like to see how well floss performs when a professional makes a string from it.

I did something similar, shaved the bark off of a sapling, braided I think ten strands of monofilament fishing line, but I used a green stick it split and I got scared to pull it back haha, it’s actually in my profile picture

It's worth a try, some silk is pretty strong.
@almubarizunarchery4607
@almubarizunarchery4607 2 жыл бұрын
You could do that, problem is, you need really good premium silk. Most silk is weaker than other natural string materials like linen. So to make a more stable bow string, you need more material, which means more weight, which means less performance. Im sure the Mongolians knew what they were doing and had the best silk possible, but im not sure it would be cost effective now. Thats just my take though.

I know from personal experience that the braided fishing line works great. I had to make a new bow string for my 65lb Mongolian Horse bow. They don't carry those strings on the shelf. I used higher weight fishing line and discovered that I had to use thicker serving string. I also noticed that when shooting the bow is quieter. I made my string during the supply issues after covid. The fishing line was on the shelf at Bass Pro Shops.

Great Video! I did the same test with an endless loop string made of Dyneema fishing line and Fast Flight Plus. Both bowstring were equal in weight and the results came out quite the same. More stretch in fishing line and around 15 fps slower. BUT braided Dyneema fishing line makes great serving! It's like Halo serving but much cheaper and lasts the same. And it comes in serveral diameters, which makes proper nock fit easy.

I use upolstery thread to make continuous loop strings. I treat the loom as a race track n do ONE FULL LAP for every pound of draw weight. One 1500 yard spool can get me 5-8 strings (depending on if mishaps happen) for my 56 inch 40 pound recurve. Plus the 1500 yard spool only cost less than $10 for two depending on where you get it from.

I had an idea for a "Will it Bow" episode. What if you took a bunch of plastic bottles and then melted them down. After melting them put the molten plastic into a mold and let it cool. Cut and Sand the plastic then glue to some type of hard wood to make a bow. I thought it would be cool to see if this idea works because you could add all kinds of cool designs into the molten plastic with different colors. Also if you wanted to you could add some small led lights into the mold before pouring the plastic into it for bow fishing or if you stay out to late and don't have a flashlight. Would have to implement a battery pack with a button or switch into the handle piece of the bow for that idea to work. Hope you like this idea, please let me know!

I had a plastic bow from aliexpress with a material „p66“, all molten. It‘s very flexible but has barely any power, too little compression power. I would expect similar results for pur PET. But it could be laminated with something harder-it‘s just difficult to find a powerful glue for PET. Epoxy might have a chance. I thought for the compressionlayer to use crushed ceramic powder in epoxy

Comment added for the drawing. Love the idea of testing handy materials for the bowstring, I'm mulling over ideas on an afternoon with my 7 year old grandson and how he and I can together make a "kids" bow and make a few arrows from stuff I already have, or reliably find on the shelf in any hardware store, and be ready to try it out the same afternoon. It has to be a really low draw weight for the little one, AND flu flu type short range arrows, injury reducing tips, I don't want him to be able to accidentally put one through the neighbor's window. Kramer any ideas? perhaps make a video about this?

my favorite alternative bow string material is spectra speargun cord. Just make it about an inch and a half shorter than you need it to be, tie two bowyer's knots on each end, then string your bow. It'll stretch to the correct length. You can control the brace height by adjustinng the loops. It's basically a braided spectra string

With the 550 cord, pulling the core strings out, wetting the hull & then thinning it out might take some of the stretch out. To "thin it", hold one end & twist it while drawing it between something, like pinched fingers (that can be done while pulling out the core strings). Also. . . Dental floss. . . It's pre-waxed, at least, haha!

That is honestly really surprising. I bet with a higher pound test fishing line you could get faster results. I know some of the 80 and 100# stuff I have is ridiculously strong!

I found this video searching for something I maybe had laying around at home, or that I could pick up at the local wal-mart to use as bowstring material for some hollow limb kid's bows I'm making for my grandkids. Obviously I want something safe and cheap (they're going to be HARD on these bows, I'm sure...being aged 3 to 6)...but real performance would be nice. I can't say I'm any closer to finding what I'm looking for, but I enjoy your videos anyway so no loss here, lol. Thanks for doing the test and sharing your results!

So...2wks of research and I've found that there's a billion kinds of fishing line that you could have used. The general consensus seems to be that Power Pro is the best. I'm curious what would have happened had you used the name brand in a similar strength (say 80lb test), vs an off brand 40lb line. Oh, they make it in camo too lol. Pretty cool.

There is non elastic parachord too. Also how about nylon fishing line ( transparent one) or guitar strings ( dunno if you can get them long enough)

Have you ever thought about using #36 bankline for a bow string ? I'm a beginner at bow making and was just wondering if it would make a good string. I live in Conway Arkansas and understand that you are from Arkansas too.

What about the nylon strings inside the paracord? If you braid them of course, or just the outer jacket of the paracord without the strings inside it?

Right at the beginning I was thinking "you need to be trying braid, not mono or fluoro," but you were def ahead of me. I'm impressed the 9# braid somewhat paralleled d97 - I thought it would be too light. I wonder if a higher weight braid would end up matching the d97 in every category - would make sense if actually same material. Also, your approach did, in fact, have a decent scientific approach to it - kudos!

Lots of people use Power Pro or Spiderwire braid for their strings. The general consensus from what I've seen is 60-80lb test is the best choice. Cool thing is it IS less expensive in general...mostly because it goes on sale a lot more often at places like Wal Mart (every season), plus...well, you can get it any day of the week in tons of colors at places like Wal Mart lol.

I would like to see some bow string experiments like: Can you use a Piano string or any musical instrument string as a bow string? Violins have a bows and these bows have strings too but made out of horse hair. So can you use a Violins bow's string as a bow string? (bow string made out of horse hair)

Just pressing on musical string is often enough to hurt fingers. I'd imagine itd be very painful

Piano 'string' is actually wire and would be too stiff. I've tried most things but not the genuine cat-gut used for 'real' violin stings, etc. that might work. The cheaper violin/guitar strings are on the stiff side. I kind of recall reading that the Mongols or maybe Tartars used long horse tail hair for their strings.

@@timbayliss7720 I recently heard somewhere that the mongols used silk, but I've also heard horse tail hair so idk what to believe

I know im late to the party, but i just used some artificial sinew (polyester) i found on amazon that said it was 70 lb test. I found 7 ribbons made the perfect diameter for my nocks (after serving) and them being waxed made making flemish twist bowstrings alot easier. I have one on my 45 lb sinoart 58" recurve and another on my american archery fox 55lb compound bow, and so far so good with no stretch or frays ^^ Guess a long winded way of saying id love to see how polyester artificial sinew stacks up too!
