I was looking forward to your first light up this Fall. I have always stacked my firewood outside in the open and not bother to tarp until the forcast for the first snow dump, usually mid November in Wisconsin, then I tarp off 8 cords. I start my boiler usually first part of October and last untill part of May. Rainfall doesn't bother dry firewood since the pores have tightened up. Going to miss your haying season but there is always next Summer.

It seems like the summers keep going by quicker and quicker! Wood is tarped. Actually went right after filming and had to get a 15x20 to cover it. Snowing today actually!

Charcoal. How much does it end up costing you to use that? Every day? For starting? I have piles of newspaper for free. Maybe you live in a place that has cheap charcoal, but I sure couldn't afford to use it to start my fires everyday. I don't have one of those burners but I'm caretaking a friend's farm twice a day to feed the animals and feed the fire. Often it goes out overnight.

Once my fire is started, it does not go out until April. I use bags of charcoal at the beginning of the heating season because it’s easier than messing with cardboard and kindling. Get the charcoal started, place smaller wood on top and larger wood on top of the smaller wood and I’m done. It’s a 1,2,3 kinda thing.

Oh, whew! Yeah this one that I'm taking care of for my friends is cantankerous. Might be the wood. Seems pretty heavy for its small size. I don't know where they got it but it's a bunch of blocks of random sizes.

So while I'm here waiting for it to come up to a hotter temperature before I lock it for the night and go home, I was looking up videos about other people who have this kind of furnace. Trying to find one that's just step by step exactly what needs to be done in case I'm missing something.

Build a very nice bed of coals (charcoal is perfect for it) and fire it up. It shouldn’t go out! Place enough wood in for 12 hr burn.
