Brilliantly informative. Thank you. I still think my primary personal limit is just looking at very cold water.

Very good safety information Laura 👍 I use to wild swim a lot, but it's been many years since I last had a dip. Must tell you a funny story. I was doing a walking / camping holiday in Scotland years ago, and I came a cross a stream simulator to the one in this video, and I decided to have a swim. Well as it was during the summertime and I had not seen anyone else for 3 hours, I decided not to ware my swim trunks and get back to nature. After an hour or so (Very hot day) I was hungry and decided to get out, just as an elderly couple turned up OMG... They sat on the bank for 2 hours having a picnic talking to me and ask me 3 or 4 times would I like to get out and have a sandwich, I just kept saying no thanks I'm not hungry lol. As they were leaving the lady said you must really love the water to be in there so long. Needless to say since then I always had my trunks on. JUST GLAD IT WASN'T WINTER !!!

This is the video I’ve been waiting for Laura brilliant thank you. You answered one of my questions here…about getting changed after 😳 but can I ask about getting over the pain of the cold, I’ve paddled in streams that are so cold it actually hurts, how do you deal with that?

I’m sorry to say it still flipping hurts sometimes! slow down your mind and breath and dig deep into your resilience, that’s why it’s so good for mental health and toughness I guess

Thanks, Laura good advice much the same applies to any outdoor adventures be prepared and think about what you are doing and what you would do in the event of a problem. What is going on regarding wild camping on Dartmoor there seems to be a legal case that affects things? I saw it on the news a couple of days ago and thought of you. Richard 🐶

Hi Richard, it’s been a byelaw that you could wild camp in certain areas with assumed permission, or so we thought. Seems that following the land owners case that’s not correct you still need landowner permission like every where else in the UK. For individuals it’s BAU like everywhere else in the UK from this point, arrive late, leave early, be discreet and leave no trace

@@lauragriffithsoutdoors how do you know the landowner where you intend too camp , and his contact details too get his permission, and in your opinion is this all caused by tourists and people who don’t love the moors taking advantage and leaving a mess ? Not now but when I was younger it was one of the beautiful things about camping on the moors , the sense of freedom too roam and camp respectfully next too some beautiful places , sad how time changes , next it will be no BBQ at Spitchwick etc .

That’s really where the law makes it difficult, who does know the landowner and who to contact anywhere in the UK, a problem we all face and from a practical point of view impossible. I personally think that lockdown behaviour with parking and people using any moorland like their back yard made this all worse. The abandoned tents, bbqs, drinks bottles, even inflatables in the rivers was ridiculous, sadly fires too. It’s always the case the a few spoil it for the many.

@@lauragriffithsoutdoors Hi Laura, not wrong, here the beach and other spaces are covered in litter, tents, etc and it is left to others to clear up sad isn't it ?

Hi, quick question, to fit your waterproof jacket over your padded jacket, did you go up 1 size or 2? I find that going up 1 size is a bit tight but 2 sizes bigger and the waterproof jack on its own is huge! :) ... Also loving your enthusiasm for your walks, only just come accross your channel. Looks like a great place to live, but do you need a car to get to all these places?!

Hi I have 2 waterproof coats and can only wear certain mid layers with each, I find it equally as difficult to know! Sorry that’s probably not very helpful

Apparently Mr Dickwall is claiming wild swimming is not a recreational activity and no longer allowed on Dartmoor ! 😂

Hi Laura thank you for your video I have good experience of sea swimming (summer) and lake / reservoir swims ( summer again) and enjoy your videos of wild swimming on Dartmoor. The one question I have is about leeches in the pools on Dartmoor. Swimming a lot on Dartmoor is it something you give any attention too? I have tried to research and get they not harmful and how to remove if they attach. Are they an issue for swimmers? Do you actively look for them / get get in and not hang about in the shallows /or just find a friend to go in first? Any guidance would be most welcome even if it is something not to think about and just do the swim.

Hiya that’s a really good question, I’ve actually only ever seen them in the quarries, foggingtor is the only Dartmoor quarry I’ve swam in and it did have leeches. I did exactly that googled how to remove in case and got straight in and kept moving. Sorry that’s probably not much help, it’s not something I am too worried about because I know they are used in hospitals to clean blood so I’m not to bothered about them

I know it sounds a bit bizarre, the only thing that puts me off this time of year is that the water is so cold, does it not risk a cardiac arrest because it’s quite a sudden shock to the body?

Hello absolutely it has been know it happen, for this reason it’s so important not to jump in, that seems to be the usual cause, even worse unexpectedly falling in
