I am from as Far East in England as you can get, but up till a few years back I had never seen a 'live' Bison anywhere. I found by accident a farm some distance from here that did Bed & Breakfast catering. So the wife and I visited for a couple of days. They were a commercial concern with an on-site Abattoir, and a modest shop selling the Bison meat. That also had a Red Deer herd. I loved the entire visit, they had about 180 Bison all over, so I got to be almost over stuffed with them, but it certainly intrigued me. I am now retired from engineering, so I envy your youth, and the proximity to 'wild' Bison. Apparentlythe zones we have over here are bred from the original herd bought over with 'Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show back at the turn of the 18-1900's. I love them, possibly as much as you, but circumstance is different in Merry England. I love sort of living the life through your video's, so keep them up, and good luck to you all over there....... I can never get over how big a bull actually gets.....!!!

We have a ranch east of Ardmore a bit, and are interested in starting a herd. We already have a large red deer farm, but on the eastern side of the property we are removing a few hundred acres of cedar to enhance the local prairie. Thought adding bison would be a nice touch. Already mostly high fenced, would be easy to finish the job. Would you be willing to sell a few cows and a bull? Would love to have you come visit, we have a 120 acre private small mouth/ large mouth/ Walleye lake that you'd be more than welcome to fish. Thanks!

Well, there's a lot that goes into starting. The thing that helps me the most is spend time with them. They need to know who you are and how much you care about them. That has been the biggest factor raising ours. Especially when it comes to working them, they change when you pin them up and corner them. If you are passionate and really love these animals, then you will be fine.

Hey just found your channel. I'm learning more about raising bison. We live in upstate NY where the winters are cold and long. Can bison live outside all winter? Would they enjoy walking through snow? Do you ever put them in a barn? I was reading they don't like small spaces. Our field also has a pond so are they ok around water(wouldn't want them drowning), do they swim? We only have about 10 acres so I read we could only handle about 2 bison at a time? Any ideas? Thanks
@CrossTimbersBison
@CrossTimbersBison 4 жыл бұрын
Bison can handle any cold weather! They are built for it. They can also swim. We have a barn they can get under if they need to...but they are tough animals and don't have to have a cover or barn. Your acreage...it all depends on how much grass you have there? You can contact your local NRCS and they can help you on stocking rates and can get you some good info on your land.

I have a couple quick questions for you. How many acres of grassland do you need per adult Bison? Are there types of grass they just wouldn't eat? Can you mix smaller animals like sheep or goats in the same pasture? Are there any books you would recommend on raising Bison? Thanks!
@CrossTimbersBison
@CrossTimbersBison 4 жыл бұрын
Acres depends on where you are located and how much grass is available. We can do about 3-4 acres per head of bison. They'll eat just about any grass...they prefer native over other types like bermuda. Not suppose to mix the two...sheep and goats can carry a disease that can spread to bison and kill them.

I read this excerpt in a book recently “you can farm” from polyface farms in Va. “Just remember that the reason something is exotic is because it is hard to do. Buffalo are a prime example. If you saw what kind of corrals, fencing and trucks these wild dudes require, you'd think twice about getting into them. They are not easy to control, manage or produce. And they are not easy to market, either. Yes, some folks have established a market and have carved out a niche for themselves. But carving out a profitable niche with an exotic item about which the normal person is completely unaware is extremely difficult.”

You can buy calves for around $800-$1000 a head. Yearling heifers and young bulls around $1800. Acreage depends on where you are and how much grass is available. Where we are we can have 4 acres per head of bison. You can buy them from any private producer that is selling them.
