How to start your Stihl HS 45 hedge trimmer

In the video I explain how to start your HS 45 hedge trimmer without flooding the carburettor. It's easy said than done I hear you, though years of experience with our customer service and listening to our customers coming back and saying that they can not start their hedge trimmer and they can smell petrol? Here I show you the technic and the procedure using the cruise button, only keeping the choke lever in the horizontal position (CHOKE ON) then press the PRIMER BULB and pull the recoil until you hear that cough or that the engine tried to run but stop. This is a INDICATION to put the choke lever in the horizontal position (CHOKE OFF) and then press the primer bulb and pull the recoil and the way you GO!
Please note not all the time will the hedge trimmer start as easy as shown in the video, on a very cold or cold morning you may need to repeat the exercise above a few times until the carb readjust to the condition of the temperature.
Please note the on/off position is as follows
I is ON
O is OFF

Great little hedgecutter! Mine have gone through 7 years of commercial abuse and still going strong. Very loud and vibrates like a jackhammer, but very reliable and tuff as old boots! 👍

You should training all the UK Stihl dealers, never got advice when I bought mine. I love your advice about the Stihl 'cough'.

If I had to stop for a few minutes and turn the unit off would I have to start it like this or just give it a pull ?

Hi Kevin You should be able to start without using the choke if you have been using the hedge trimmer

Do you have to start it like this Every time ...or is this just a cold start

Good Morning depending if you have been using it and the engine is warm you should be able to start without the choke. Using the choke any morning cold or warm just helps or gives it a kick start. Though the technic and tip shown in my video is not to over choke the engine

Apologies for the delay I would always recommend the HP super engine oil for being its smokeless, cleaner for the engine and it stabilisers the pertol
