Just a tip: when putting screws into plastic, turn them backwards until your here it click, at that point your thread has entered the original groove, and you won't be chasing new threads into the plastic. Thanks for a splendid video.

There is a spark arrestor in the muffler. On bottom of unit screw the exhaust tube out. No need to take the muffler off

Thank you for mentioning the two types of screws used to fasten down the orange cover. I pulled them all out, put them in a cup while doing some maintenance, then when I was putting them back I noticed two different kinds. 😮 Now I know which one goes where. 🙂 Thorough video. 👍🏻👍🏻

Credit where it's due Mick, Thanks for a very informative upload. I've recently purchased a parcel of land and invested in some new Stihl 2-Stroke equipment (Brush Cutter and Chainsaw) and a second hand HS45 from Ebay (£120). The HS45 started first time and the engine runs smooth but the teeth seem to stick a little and can stall the engine, so I've purchased a tin of solvent cleaner assuming it's just resin build-up (hopefully that's all it will take to get it running smoother). I've subbed with all bells ringing. Thanks again.

Thanks for this! My HS45 wasn't running properly despite someone 'servicing' it last year. Did all the steps here myself and it's sorted after only a few quid in parts. Found the spark plug easier to get at after removing the orange plastic hood - great video, will subscribe for more!

Hi. I have a Stihl HS86 trimmer. Only seems to run on choke, but revs dip and climb repeatedly when holding it up vertically cutting the hedge. It was serviced back end of last year, tank filter, air filters, plug etc. Can’t work out the issue. First time I used it yesterday since service and sharpen.

The pros around my part of Florida call this type trimmer a "shorty". I prefer a stick trimmer myself but always have room for a good running shorty.

Interesting to watch the fix. On removing the spark plus I find it easier to remove the top shroud rather than dislocate my hand and stress the handle trying to get at it from the front.

Hey Mick...great video. Question: How can I disassemble the HS45 to remove the muffler? The two screws won't stay tight, and sometimes they fall out as they're stripped. I need to look at the two holes to see why they keep loosening up. Perhaps replace the muffler and gasket. If I do replace the muffler, will that keep it tight, or are the holes in the body of the trimmer stripped? Thanks for responding back. THUMBS UP!!!

Great video and did everything you showed but fuel not getting through to fuel primer bulb so assume there is a blockage somewhere? Do you cover cleaning the fuel lines and/or carburettor as well anywhere?

BMR7A is not the same plug as a BMPR7A. Use the correct plug, always. I use Bosch WSR6F in all of my Stihl equipment that use it. It is the same plug as the NGK BPMR7A, but a better plug. I buy air filters and fuel filters for my specific Stihl piece of equipment from my local Stihl dealer. Aftermarket products like these are not manufactured to the same standard. I always use oem parts if possible and available. Fuel lines are another specific example where you go oem. I also use Stihl two cycle oil.

Mick I'm in a pickle over one of these. The machine was fine last season and I've serviced it. However the carburettor can be primed at the primer bowl but no fuel will squirt up through the jet. I had a new carburettor for it and no change. I have a good coil and new spark plug but even with some carburettor cleaner sprayed down the intake ,it won't fire. Any advice?

Those these 45's vibrate like a bastard and are as loud as an angry wife, they are great machines. Never had an issue after about 5 years of commercial abuse, did treat it to a service last year though!
