How To Stay Motivated to Produce Music

In this video I discuss what helps me stay motivated and I summarise it into 3 simple points. This video focuses on music production but can be applied to almost anything in life. What motivates you?
1) Find something or someone who motivates you, for me this is usually another artist or creator.
When I'm trying to motivate myself to practice guitar, I listen to John Mayer or go to "Paul Davids" on KZfaq. Hearing the beautiful guitar work or seeing an inspiring personality helps me keep working to achieve my goals.
( Paul's Channel is linked here for anyone who is interested / @pauldavids )
2) Look back at your previous completed projects/videos/songs and look at the growth you are experiencing over time. Think about how much more you will know or achieve in the next year? In the last year I know that I have made a lot of progress as a musician, video creator, film maker etc but day to day I can feel like I'm not making a lot of progress at all. Remind yourself of how far you've come :)
3) Remind yourself why you are doing it. Make sure you have a clear reason behind what you are doing. When you remind yourself why you are doing something, it will help you stay focused and motivated.

My summary: 1. Envision yourself as being as good as other artists if you keep trying 2. Reflect on your past achievements and successes 3. Remind yourself why you're doing or learning it 4. Keep in mind what the results may be or already are, both financially and otherwise

I recently made a commitment to spend at least half an hour in my daw every day, and 7 hours a week. So roughly an hour a day. Just to make sure that I keep making steady progress. Another part of this "training" I have going in on is binging your videos. Watching at least one a day. Which means rewatching a lot of them. But they are so full of info that I still learn a lot. Thanks for helping!!

I am currently hitting that time right now.... I feel quite unmotivated and this video helped a lot! I love how you explained it all You just helped not just me, but a lot of people who are struggling with this I currently have a problem where I feel too lazy at times, and I think to myself that my music is not that good compared to others... You are a lifesaver my guy, may God bless you. Now I have enough inspiration and determination to start working on my projects! Thank you! ❤️

It may sound cliché, but for instance I haven't worked on music since the beginning of this summer. I feel lika motivation is a feeling. And like feelings they come and go. If you search for motivation it is never going to present itself like you want to. Make music anyways. Even if you don't feel like it at all and motivation will find you. 😊

My "why" is that I love to see and be able to create beautiful things and see how far I can go even if I'm creating something simple or more complex (for art in general, not only music), it's joyfull for me and brings happiness to my life and potentially to people who watchs my content and listens my music. It's something fun that I enjoy to do, to learn, to create, to be inspired and I think art saves lifes. ♥ For me it's like playing, for example, when I'm painting, I see the colors, the brushes, the paper and it amazes me alot! (Then FL Studio has a brush, LOL! I felt like a happy kid when I saw this! I know, silly). 😹

Playing/learning/making music etc, Is very beneficial. It forces you to use your frontal lobe, which will improve cognitive function over time, thus making you smarter. Able to solve problems. Try to keep things in perspective. It’s practice over perfection. For there is always something to learn, skills to improve. Levels to climbed. Keep climbing 🧗‍♂️. Open your soul. Thanks in the mix, you helped me realise ^ :)

Excellent and unassuming advice on a major aspect of the music making process. All 3 points good, but for me the standout is motivation from listening to music and feeling that urge to emulate or develop something similar. I hear the smooth guitar solo in Aimee Mann's Soon Enough or Joe Walsh effortlessly sliding around in Rocky Mountain Way and I want to pick up the guitar. Or Chris Squire's punchy bass on Yes's Roundabout, the lively line in Blockhead's Tricky Turtle or Paul Chamber's walking bass on Coltrane's Giant Steps get me reaching for the bass. Bob Dylan's Hurricane or any of the Incredible String band for the fiddle and Stravinsky's Orpheus for getting lost in sheer overwhelming beauty. Shame I can't play to any decent standard, but all these and a million more inspire me and help to stave off the aimless tinkering when I achieve nothing but a few isolated loops. Great series In The Mix. It has helped me to rapidly ramp up the technical efficiency of using FL Studio so can concentrate on the real purpose - making music.

Thanks for this. Some years back, I was diagnosed with reactive depression and so motivation for anything can be hard to find. I trained as a psychologist, so I decided to 'Premack' myself for one current project (writing some teaching text stuff for my old university)... but that didn't work. In the end, I had to go full on behavioural activation ... with a fixed ratio positive reinforcement schedule and immediate delivery of the actual reinforcer (one small glass of beer/cider per 150 sensible/relevant words written). In one evening and one afternoon, I got almost 1000 words into about 5000 to 7000 words of text aimed at teaching 2nd-year postgrads about mental health issues in the lives of autistic people (my main professional specialism). It was very important to have an _external_ motivator to start me off. I can rethink the FR value at some point and I can choose what subsection I work on to vary the focus of the content. I was very interested in watching this video and it was good to see someone advocating external motivators. Take care, man, and thanks for sharing what you do.

there are those times when you get so down that you think life has no meaning and literally nothing is worth it, you just sit in your room or sleep all day - yes it's scary, but at the same time those times are the best. It's weird to explain, but the further you go, the more you keep looking for inspiration. It may take hours, it may take days, but when inspiration hits you are unstoppable. But overall when you hit the lowest of lows you realise that music is like therapy and you really start to make music for yourself - you are the creator and listener at the same time. When you combine those two things and start making music from the lonely, the one and only one point of view that's when it truly hits you and it's a guarantee that it will speak and connect deeply with the listener from outside. It's like you have to embrace the lonely aspect and just let it all go in one track. Good luck! :)
