We show the nitty gritty details on how to rebuild a ford (sterling) 10.5" full float rear axle. This is one of the stronger truck axles on the market and has tons of aftermarket part options. I chose to go with Yukon Gear & Axle products because they have never let me down and they have awesome customer service. The grizzly locker is an insanely strong locker and does very well in my 1500ftlb cummins diesel application.

I buy 2 inner pinion Timken bearings . Same brand same store, hone one shim to depth , check pattern. Then use the other warm in oven pinion in freezer. Wnen final ( hopefully) assembly ) Check lash moving carrier, shim there. Check pattern. Usually I have it good .

Baller video! Wasn't the 86 F350 10.25" vid I was lookin for but great video; watched all the way through. Was thinking could've poured some scaldin water on the bearing before trying to pull. Papa taught me long ago to use heat/cold for engineer work. 💯🤠🍻

@ThanosJK

Not to nitpick but @ 10:14 you want to set the gauge up so it's as perpendicular to the rotation of the ring gear teeth as possible for the most accurate measurement. Having it only be 30-45 degrees as it looks here will end up showing you less backlash than there actually is.

The video says that you should crush the pinion crush sleeve with a breaker bar. However, I had my Ford Excursion propped up from the rear axle and just couldn't configure a way to get the leverage needed to enough torque on that pinion nut. So I pulled out a 1/2" electrical impact wrench and the 1 1/8" impact socket and just laid into it. It DID eventually spin to a point where I got the correct preload reading using a rolling torque wrench. HOWEVER, that was my second try. On my first try, I was going less than a 1/4 of a turn on the nut before I would check the rolling torque. After about 8 times of getting the same rolling torque reading (almost zero), I got impatient and went 3/4 turn. Well, my next rolling torque reading came out to 125 inch pounds! No bueno! So that meant I had to take the nut off and pull the pinion shaft out and install another crush sleeve. 2nd time I was more patient...LOL.

fuckery abounds I guess I didnt see much that seemed not good enough! It's held up thus far. This was 2 years ago now.. the only thing we should have done differently was a setup bearing but we tried to keep the costs down. What else didn't out like? I'm curious, so I know what not to have in the next video, etc.

Idk what this guys talking about. Looked good to me. Shit gets fucked up all the time due to incompetent workers, even in dealerships. That looked incredibly difficult, and I’m second guessing trying to do my own pinion Bearings. Ford wanted $2100

You can get a solid shim kit for a ford 9” rear end for the pinion to replace the crush sleeve. Thats what i did on my 10.5 when i had to do the pinion seal took me a bit to get the rights preload set and not take everything apart but having a diff temp gauge helped alot.
