How to Stop Algae From Growing in Your IBC Tote shows two ways to keep sunlight from growing algae in your IBC totes. The first method is to paint the IBC bladder tank and the second way is to cover the tank. This can be done by covering the entire tank, cage and all or you can remove the bladder tank and just cover it and put it back in the cage.

I just did this project before I watched your video. I used a good quality exterior grade house paint. The tanks got scratched up a bit when I put back into the metal chassis, and so there was some touch up involved after reinstallation. I'm building an elevated and covered "shed" to contain mine so there will be additional protection from sunlight and the elements in general. Thanks for the video.

I just bought a IBC tote, I'll wrap it with a camouflage small tarp using zip ties. A barrier from direct sunlight hitting it, real simple.

I spray painted mine with dark camouflage colors, worked great.

If you live near any farms you may be able to get cheap “silage bag” plastic, white on 1 side black on the other to wrap them with Just food for thought and helps recycle the plastic 😊😊

hmm, it has been a year, has painting them worked for you in stopping the algae growth, did the paint peel off

They do have covers you can buy for right around $30. Not perfect, but they do a good job.

Recently new to off grid living here and had some questions if anyone had some answers! we currently have about 1000 gals of water in ibc totes that we're using to pump into our RV; however, we've noticed that algae is starting to grow. These videos & comments are great on how to prevent it, but was curious if we could still use the water? we typically give our pets water from faucet and use it for cooking/shower as well, but was unsure if it is safe to drink... if anyone could let me know that'd be great!

Can you drink the water after you do this? Do you put Clorox or anything in it? Can you drink it then?

I wonder what disadvantage it is to just leave the algae in the tank other than the looks of it? I would think it would be kinda like extra fertilizer for that plants.

It may help plants. You’d have to worry about it clogging up a hose nozzle or pump though. I’m using mine to water the animals and don’t want the algae to clog the chicken nipples so I need clean water.
