To control the temperature and reflect light, the last coat should be white paint.

Many outdoor plastic water tanks are green for the same reason that plants are green. Because they absorb Red and blue light which plants need. Plants don't use green light, so that's the only light left for us humans to see. Black water tanks are popular too, but green ones work just as well for stopping algae growth.

Spray weatherstrip glue and Aluminum foil. Blocks all UV and reflects heat. Black paint absorbs heat.

thanks for the good video, my tanks were in place and filled with water before I knew this black out trick so I took a shortcut with my 11 tanks, I wrapped each one in 6 mi black plastic outside the cage. I used electrical ties and screws with washers drilled into the frame to hold the plastic in place. it is easy to do. I am not concerned with light coming in the bottom each tank has a black bottom. have the same black plastic on the ground that has been exposed to the sun for 8 years and it is still in great shape. I did some math and found that 1 qt of chlorine bleach per month will help keep it clean, once a month I add a dunks tablet to prevent mosquitoes. We don't use this water for drinking, the water is used for gardening, and irrigating the fruit orchard and blueberry bushes. We have a deep well and if there is long term power outage we have a generator and cases and cases of bottled water in storage and a good number of 4 gallon plastic jugs filled with well water. we are not preppers or off grid folks just old boy scouts being prepared.

Great, I been using two 250 gallon totes to storage rain water off my shed this year. I bought two 275 gallon totes that I am putting in my garden. I will move the shed water to them when they get full. Had not painted or wrapped them yet.

I would replace the two lower supports. Good goin on the project. I've got a light green tank need to figure on what to coat the outside with.

Regarding heating the water, for drinking water will this not increase risks for other things like harmful bacteria like legionella? Unless its heated REALLY hot ofcourse.

If it's a water tank for potable use drinking water is it still safe to paint the outside or will that somehow leach through the plastic? Dumb question am sure. Thanks

This is was being used for a biogas digester so algae dont grow and to keep the water warm. My new water tank that I using for my home is being wrapped with black ground cover.

Paint selection could be a factor in how well it lasts, because it's a pressure vessel and will constantly be flexing, pumping up and down with gas build-up and release. Rigid paints may crack up pretty quickly.

No gas pressure in these tanks it free flows into a biogas bag. We use a pump to pull the gas from the bag to feed what ever we want. I understand where ur coming from Thu.

Every paint company I have contacted says their paint will not stick to HDPE #2 plastic. I called Rustoleum about 2X ultra cover made for plastic and they said no and called Krylon about Fusion and they said it will not stick either. All companies said nothing will stick to HDPE #2. How can I get this done

I used fusion I think and it's still holding on the tank its been a couple of years now some places like the top is showing signs

You could try plasti-dip, but it'll probably be more expensive.

I used roofing elastomer on my tanks, without sanding them, both poly. Neither has lost any paint, but the elastomer doesn't block all light. I think I'll use s dark latex paint, and repaint with elastomer, to keep them cool.

We are the last property that has county water that was grandfathered in from back it the day for ranchs. so it clean drinkable water we just dont get good water pressure.

will the tank on the hill, give you high enough pressure for your new house? It is a LOT taller than what you are used to. With it being 2 stories you will need good pressure to move the water up that extra hieight. Do you know the elevation differences between the water tank on the hill and your house? (on video it does not look that high)

Oil base holds up better outside in the sun. Or paint for plastic.

Clear tanks heat up faster than black ones. Black is hotter on the outside because all the heat is absorbed by the outside. Clear is like a greenhouse. But like you say, algae. So year black is the best opaque option for heat

you need to use a paint that is formulated for plastic or it will not stay on the plastic tank

+closertothetruth I have good clean water drinkable water going into the tank we don't have good water pressure so we let the tanks slowly fill over nite, then we put a water pump on the out water to give the home pressure so I'm just trying to stop the algae from starting. I will give an update on how it's going in a month that way I can see what's going on.
