Who here loves control??? I know I do! But the consequence is it can worsen our chronic pain and symptoms. Learning to not control our chronic pain and symptoms can support us in actually healing. In this video I discuss how we can release control behaviourally, cognitively, and somatically. At the end of this video I also guide a somatic practice to release control!
I wish you all healing!

This was brilliant. When I started and actually stopped to feel it, I could feel like I was strapped into a straight jacket. My energy felt like I was flying above my head and out of my face. It was hard to get embodied. Then the resistance breathing, with each breath I sunk deeper and deeper IN to my body. Each fist pump released so much. By the end I felt like GOO. I ended by throwing the imaginary straight jacket across the room. Thank you so much Tanner, these videos are like diamonds.

Thank you Tanner. This was excellent. Your videos keep getting better and better. This one seemed to integrate so many different aspects and relate them to our actions of control. Initially one would think that to keep on working on a symptom intensely would be a good idea but I can see that our trying to control that symptom. Thanks for that insight, very helpful. And as always the somatic practice is such good medicine. I really appreciate this.

Hi Tanner, thank you so much for all these lessons. They’re really helping me overcome this. I got a question though. I’m reading about Michael Moskowitz approach to chronic pain through visualization. His belief being that by relentlessly visualizing the brain reducing the pain activity, every time he felt something, his brain would conquer back certain areas that were kidnapped by the chronic pain. I really like the visualization technique, but I’m afraid that by doing that all the time (and Moskowitz was clear about being “relentless”) I’m headed for this path of over controlling the symptoms. Could you give me some thoughts about that? It’d help a lot.

Yes, this is a balance. Visualization is great brain retraining, however if we do it with too much intensity and pressure it can worsen dysregulation and pain.

@@painpsychotherapy Thanks Tanner! I'm seeing it as an opportunity, but not as an obligation. And not feeling bad when I don't use it either 😆

I enjoy your videos and am trying somatic tracking since nothing else has helped my chronic pain over 8 years. my challenge is how can i do somatic tracking when the majority of my pain is at a 9-10 level when i stand and walk. and my focus is literally on just not falling which i often do.What do you suggest?
@painpsychotherapy

If pain is high, you only would want to do somatic tracking for really brief periods (1 minute) or not at all. I know this can be challenging with high pain! So sorry to hear what you are dealing with.

This can be tricky and of course be careful. It typically needs to be done in a graded way, and it can be helpful to work with someone when doing this! I wish you the best in your healling.
