Crate training is really good but also you need to tell puppy NO when they have something they are not allowed and give then a item they can chew, when the puppy chews and plays with his or her toys say yes good boy/ good girl. Also a play pen area with there own toys is a great idea and you can also limited where they can go in the home and put anything u dont want them to touch out of the way. Make sure your giving your puppy exercise and brain games small training sessions through the day a tired dog is a good dog. So far my puppy is 5months old and hasnt chewed anything in the home thats not his to chew. We have been very lucky keeping your puppy busy and re directing there attention to what they can and cant chew is always a good way to go, crates are ok for when puppy has be home along and play areas are good for when u need to leave the room for a while. Break up the space dont give your puppy to much freedom at once. I will also add if you do crate your puppy for any length of time make sure they have something to do like a kong or chew also make sure that they have had a good walk and some training always put them in tired this way they will nap and settle while you are gone. My puppy only uses his crate at bed time he goes in with a one of his favourite treats at 10pm and get gets up and comes out at 6am he sleeps through the night and the rest of the day he is kept busy and naps where he likes. wants to, also he has a crate that is 42" so much bigger than he needs this allows him spaces and he can be free to move around and stretch out as he is now fully toilet trained. Will I dont think you saying crate training over and over is a good way to help the guy with his question or others as not everyone has same life style and not everyone has room for a crate in the home or even likes them.

@willathertoncaninetraining my red heeler IS crate trained. That said,, the instant she’s out she finds the opportunity to chew something. I can’t even place a dog bed or blanket for her in her crate. And if she manages to pull something into the kennel she will chew it up. She has been known to move the crate to reach blankets and such and eat them up. Help!

You always give this answer but what if you have a nine month year-old rescue who will do perfectly fine in the crate when you’re there but the second you leave they hurt themselves trying to get out and their nose drips and they drool because of the anxiety? We’ve done everything we can think of to get him comfortable in the crate and we’ve had to just except that when we leave another part of our couch will be torn apart. It’s my sister‘s dog and I’ve done the best I can but she’s thinking of getting rid of him end it devastates me

My room mate got a 4 month old back in October. She could be a nightmare in the beginning but she had been good for the last month. I think this new behaviour may be tied to reduced walks because the temperature here gets too cold for her to be outside very long or at all some days. Shes going on 8 months old now and I've become frustrated after we discovered she had taken a chunk out of the carpet last week and then again somewhere else last night. I told my room mate I hate to say i told you so but she doesnt believe in crate training but I think shes now convinced and also have to figure out how to repair this as its a rental apartment.

He's so anxious by himself and we've tried to ease him into being home alone but even an hour and he's either destroyed something or hurt himself. We feel so stuck

Ok so this is kinda my problem except my 8 month old German sheperd doesn't tear anything up in the house hardly ever except his bed, that he chews on within a day of me fixing it. The issue arises while he and my border collie are both outside. He digs and chews constantly. He has a thing about pulling branches and firewood out and chewing on it but will also chew on kid toys or really anything new that gets left out. Now I have watched your videos and I know exercise and mental stimulation is a big part of it which I do every day for about an hour or more. He listens and is very smart and I have zero issue besides this.

8 weeks!!!!! There is a lot of learning that goes on between the puppies and their mom between 6 and 8 wks. And those lessons will make your puppy a much more well adjusted dog as he grows. In fact, in many states in the US it is illegal to sell a puppy before 8 wks. And quality, ethic breeders will not release a puppy before 8 wks.

I have a lab husky mix, I got him when he was 4 months now he is 9 months. I’ve done everything for crate training. In fact my crate I use is a big outside pen about 6x4 in the spare bedroom so it’s huge for him. First day we moved into the apartment he shredded 2 big spots in the carpet. Since then he’s ate everything including utensils, remotes, chairs and not stop gets in the trash no matter how much I kennel him for and smack his butt with whatever he ate a couple times. I don’t get why 5 months of trying to kennel train hasn’t worked a single bit. He can’t be left alone in the apartment for more than a minute. And he has absolutely no shame when he does something wrong. My other 2 know if they didn’t something wrong and do their scared crawl and avoid eye contact yanno.. but I’ll smack my labsky with a spoon he ate, put it in the trash and he goes right to the trash to try and get it. I’m lost and tired of the thousands and thousands of dollars of damages he’s caused, I’m about to give him up.

As someone who works at a vet office, crate training is SUPER important. For one, I can't even tell you how many dogs we have had to perform foreign body surgeries on because owners don't use a crate. Crates are also a quiet resting place for dogs. Mine is built like a den with a blanket covering it and blankets inside. My dog goes in there by himself to sleep and get away from everyone. Crate training is also important when it comes to situations such as taking your dog to the vet, the groomer, day care, boarding. It is AWFUL trying to wrestle a dog to get into a crate or a dog that is so scared that tries to bite because they are not use to being in a closed space. Dogs try to hurt themselves in crates often at work because they scream, smash their face into the bars to try and chew their way out. We have one family that comes to us with a dog that has had THREE foreign body surgeries because they don't want to use a crate. Dogs not even a year old. I don't even know how this dog is still alive and i'm positive he cant survive another surgery. So with that being said...training a young puppy to enjoy the crate is not a bad idea.
@ewanstevenson
@ewanstevenson 3 жыл бұрын
@@BeautifulEurope97 Because they don't use a cage, or they just don't look after them? What you describe for your dog's safe place sounds great. I would just never advocate shutting them in it. I see your point about the vets - and you've obviously seen this - but we've never had that trouble. Nor have we ever caged them. But to get them used to it for the sake of going to the groomers? Seriously? One of ours was anxious before an op so the pre-med injection had no effect on him. Next time, he had the jab and we took him back to the car until he passed out, then carried him back in. Had he been crate trained, maybe this wouldn't have been necessary. But maybe it wouldn't have made any difference at all. IMO, if you can't give your dog the attention they need and have to lock them up just so you can get on with your day, then get a fish! I'm self-employed and have lost countless hours of work chasing after puppies, but that's a sacrifice I've made willingly.

@@ewanstevenson Most people don't work from home and HAVE to leave for work almost everyday. I dont think there's that big of a difference if the dog is alone in a living room or in a safe crate where it can't hurt itself.
