Everyone feels overwhelmed from time to time. Feeling overwhelmed is an unpleasant mix of anxiety, futility and hopelessness that makes you want to give up and stop doing anything. When you are overwhelmed, it saps your energy, reduces motivation and makes everything seem impossible. This can drive feelings of anxiety and depression that just make you feel even worse.
Feeling overwhelmed means that you are trying to do too much and that what you are trying to do is impossible. This may mean that you are trying to accomplish too large a task all at once, or it could be that you are trying to do a number of small goals all at once. So, the key to managing the feeling of being overwhelmed is to first recognize that you are overwhelmed and that means that you are trying to do too much. Then, you need to focus on doing one thing at a time, setting aside everything else you need to do and just focus on the one task in front of you. Once you have completed that task, move on to the next.
So, the key is when you are feeling overwhelmed, it is your cue to stop everything that you are trying to do and just do one thing at a time.

In years of watching videos about psychology and self-help yours are just about the only ones that give concise, applicable actions that you can take right away to solve your issues. Real therapy is personalized and therefore more effecatious, but for some quick tips, you can't beat these. Thank you very much.

For once I'm going to share an experience I had. I was in a relatively new job, way above the level I'd worked at before. One Monday morning I came in and I was overwhelmed, completely as you describe in your video. To the point of having a physical response - I literally felt dizzy and in my stomach a black ball of panic pulsed to the beat of my rapid heartbeat. I was almost blacking out, knowing I was going to fail ignominiously at the job. After panicking a bit I got a pad and wrote a list of everything I had to do that week. There was a shitload of it, and I only had 3 days because those were the terms of my employment. After that I went through and arranged the list in order of how certain I was to get the sack if I didn't do that thing. I rewrote the list in that order. Then I started, as calmly as I could, on the first task. I finished that, crossed it out and went to the next thing. I HAD FINISHED EVERYTHING ON MY LIST BY LUNCH TIME. I had the rest of the week, 2 and a half days, to plan and do strategic things that I wanted to do. I've never forgotten this. I still get overwhelmed and I still panic sometimes. But I've got that memory to hang on to. Oh, and I probably wouldn't have got the sack if I didn't get it all done anyway :) I hope this can help someone. Thank you for all you do :)

I just discovered you Dr Rami. Good tools for me I’m a clinician but have also battled dysthymia.. so want to get better at helping myself so that I could help others..I love your content..

great video, thank you so much for your videos, very well explained, you explanation really helps understand how we are overwhelmed because we dont break down things into smaller tasks and only seeing big picture , which can be anxiety provoking.

I wonder, what is a good approach for someone who is intimidated by prioritization? I am often overwhelmed and use avoidant behaviors to cope (which makes things worse, like you said), and I know I am trying to do too much and need to focus on one small thing at a time. But how do I know what I should be working on? Particularly when the urgency of tasks is not static (working on a paper that's overdue is urgent, but eventually so is making dinner and going to the bathroom and changing a dirty diaper and and and). I'm terrified I will miss something important so I make huge lists that are hard to keep track of, and I'm so scared I will choose the wrong thing to spend my small amount of energy on.

That's a good question. What I find is that there is usually no specific order that must be followed when prioritizing tasks. Sure, some approaches may be more efficient or effective, but typically, it doesn't matter where a person starts. In other words, if prioritization is not clear, then just start working on anything, rather than trying to figure out the best order to do things. I hope that helps.

I don't know if this will help you, but I wonder if it's maybe the numbers that scare you, and maybe if you just assigned everything A, B or C you could then just randomly work from the A list. It's not so intimidating as having to get a big list in the exactly right order, especially if one's a bit of a perfectionist.

What if two minutes brushing your teeth is overwhelming?

In situations like this, I recommend that my clients set to goal of brushing their teeth for 30 seconds, or whatever amount of time is not overwhelming.
