Years ago when I lived in an apartment, I had an alarm on my bike. I was sitting 3 stories up in my living room when I heard my alarm in the underground parking. I ran downstairs and there was my bike, a screwdriver stuck in the ignition and a toolbox full of tools beside it. The thief was not expecting an alarm! It scared the crap out of him and he ran off leaving about $1000 worth of tools behind. I still have those tools 😀
@Vynzent

That's awesome. I am definitely adding a vibration sensor alarm but I even had this idea... to have another vibration sensor on the inside of the cover itself. This way just the act of uncovering the bike would set off an alarm. Granted, I'd have to find a spot that isn't moved around much by the wind and find a setting that isn't too sensitive.

Can you explain how you did this? Did you put in the bottom and concrete half the chain in it?
@bradv9449
@bradv9449 21 күн бұрын
@@JustWrightHD You need a 5/8"X 12" eye bolt. Put a large washer with jam nuts on the threaded end. Suspend the assembled eye bolt with a stick into the center of the bucket placing the stick across the rim of the bucket. Pour cement into the bucket taking care to keep the eye bolt centered in the bucket as you pour. If you don't have a hand cart to move the completed anchor pour the cement in the location where you intend to use it. Buy a theft proof chain or cable to attach your motorcycle to eye bolt in the bucket. Thief's normally steal motorcycles by lifting them into a pickup. The bucket weighs close to 100lbs and will make it harder to quickly steal bike by lifting it, or rolling it away. It's not fool proof, but it is better than nothing.

I would say the cover is less about deterring lazy thieves and more about deterring thieves conscious enough to realize that pulling up a cover to check someone else’s property is extremely suspicious. Edit: also another easy way to signal “my bike has a disc lock/chain on it” is to use reminder cables, especially neon bright cables running right up to the handlebar. Good reminder to take it off before you ride, good signal to a thief to move on before they mess with the fork lock.

@@SB-or5mj yeah i wasn't totally sure if i applied the word right. Cinematography has to do with the behavior of the camera, the shot angles, transitions from scene to scene... Whereas yeah, while choreography is usually associated with dance, i think it can also more generally refer to how someone moves during some kind of production. Maybe "staging" would have been a better word. In any event, both the cinematography AND Spite's movements, gestures, etc are a step up, and it really elevates the video.

Once i left my motorcycle at the airport car park and went on a holiday. There were dozens of bikes there. When i arrived, the cover on my bike was lifted up in the front wheel area and hooked up high on the steering bar. Clearly someone was checking what my bike's make and condition was. Because i had two chains on a front wheel and a screemer disc lock on the back wheel they did not still my bike. But i was surprised that even in such place with lots of CCTV cameras around someone still tried to steal my bike.

It hurts me that the cover you used is the exact same cover that was on my CRF300L when they stole it. They cut that front strap and just picked it up and took it. I didn’t have a tracker on it. One thing I’d add to the video: beware of your surroundings. People are watching you come and go on your bike. If it’s under a cover, someone nearby is probably the one who stole it. The thieves who stole my CRF moved over two bikes to get to mine. They knew what it was.

You can get motorcycle covers with reinforced holes to pass a lock through the wheels at both ends, making it tougher for them to "unwrap the present". Other than that, this is really solid advice coming from someone with real world experience. There was a big theft a few years ago in North Sydney, where a white van pulled up next to a motorcycle parking bay & the guys got out & loaded up in broad daylight. They went straight for the Ducati's, BMW's & Harley's in front of hundreds of witnesses & no one batted an eyelid, so yes, if they want your bike they'll take it. So if you commute to work & have to park on the street, get a cheap reliable bike & leave your fun bike for the weekends.

If you have a ground level door, roll that bike into the living room. I've done this at a many of Super 8's and other outside door motels. Only thing that was ever said to me by other people staying their was smart move! If you're not riding your bike daily and have your bike in an area like spite does as shown here, you could let alot of the air out of the tires and make sure they're nearly flat! Like he said thief's are lazy and if they're going to have to work their butt's off just to push the bike a few hundred yards to wherever their truck or trailer is they might just move on to an easier target. Craftsman battery operated Air compressors can be bought for cheap compared to buying a new bike if you don't have specific replacement insurance.

My bike got jacked a couple weeks ago. Got it back thankfully. but it made me up my security game tenfold. I had previously only used the Fork Lock, and occasionally a Cover or Disc lock if I didn't expect to ride for a day. Since the theft I've purchased a Ring Camera for my Parking Spot (apartment life, boo), AirTagged all my bikes, and sank a 1"x4" eyelet into the parking lot to run a Kryptonite chain through. I figure my bikes cost a lot more than my security deposit, and I *highly* recommend defacing your parking lot for the additional level of security.

It’s all about layers. Like cake. I like to have an anchor or something to chain my bike to. A chain around my swingarm or frame. I have an AirTag hidden. I have a GPS hidden. And a secondary GPS hidden. I also use a disc lock with an alarm. I also use a bike cover. But to be honest, parking in light won’t do much. Steering locks are good. Disc locks are good. But you can steal a bike with skateboards. But it’s definitely going to help. Also, adding a camera with motion activation can be good. It’ll send notifications when someone is coming by your bike. And potentially get a glimpse of who did it.

I doubt anyone has ever tried to steal my bike, but here's my setup: #1 The bike came with a built-on fork lock that prevents you from steering. #2 I cover it with a tarpaulin and use two locks to secure both ends of the tarp, you have to cut the locks or cut the tarp to get it off. #3 I run a heavy duty chain through the back wheel and around a column and lock it. So a thief has to remove at least #3 if they have a vehicle transporting OR everything if they planned to hotwire.

The best anti-theft I found so far is to store a bike in a locker which is inside the underground parking lot of gated apartment complex with 24/7 security cameras surveillance. Nothing can beat that. Nobody even knows the motorcycle is there let alone stealing it from there. Sometimes I even think like "If someone manages to steal my bike from here, well he definitely deserves it". The downside - the price of this luxury. I will not discover anything new, but this is another example how money can solve complicated problems.

I had the chain through bikes my back rim and through the steel hand rail of the porch. I lived on the ground floor and was in my living room awake at 1:30a.m. when I heard the chain go 'CHING!' and I went outside and found the chain super tight but the bike still there. That cover and the alarm disc lock are a great ideas. I would do EVERYTHING you said as well as a big chain through something like a steel rail or around a light pole or something like that. These days, I would be carrying if I went to check my bike ....with at least pepper spray or a chef knife or bat or something ....because thieves are crazy these days. And the police are simply buried in assault crime...property crime is low on their list of give a darn. It's always best to make the thieves really nervous about stealing your stuff whatever that is. Don't bother with steering lock unless its the only lock you have, breaking the steering lock is surprisingly expense if you need to repair. My bike is alarmed, parts etched, big fkoff chain and a tracker. For some reason society won't let me chain a dog to it.

The most common theft in NYC are those bikes that aren't secured at all. A disc lock is enough of a deterrent, if they come with a pickup truck or van to steal bikes, they will most certainly have an angle grinder to get your expensive chain off. If the disc lock has a good alarm on it (Xena comes to mind) they can't hammer it off without setting off the alarm.

I was thinking about getting a Navi for my first bike but have been hesitant due to how light and small it is for this reason. But these are great tips and make me feel better. Thank you

You did it! Not sure if it was because a couple of us asked for it or it's just a coincidence but THANKS. To me it seems like we asked and you delivered, and that means a lot!

You missed what I consider to be the most effective and convenient option. Comprehensive insurance. Get the full value of the bike back without worrying if the police can recover it.

Thank you for talking about covers! As a ex master bike thief I been telling people for YEARS to cover their bikes. More importantly to use multiple locks since ANY lock can be picked or brute Force attacked the point of locks is to make it to hard take to long. Me I use a high-end cover with a cover lock 🔒 a simple small combo lock but it's a easy 30-60 seconds. Than I have 2 Anubis disc locks on both wheels adds about 2 minutes plus each have a 140db built in alarm steering lock of course than a kryptonite NYC lock securing the bike to a stationary object it takes about 4 minutes to grind through. All Giving me about 5 to 7 minutes of safety worth of locks alone. I also have a 2 way alarm system with proximity detection and motion detection it alerts my fop when it goes off if I'm to far to hear it but the bike itselfs lights go nuts and the siren is super loud 📢. If all that fails I have 2 GPS systems 1 wired into the bike wired up in such a way that if you try to disconnect it improperly the bike will not run i.e ripping it off which in itself would be hard since it is in an area that requires removal of other parts and a Samsung tile tag tucked DEEP into the bike. I have very bad karma so I take the extra steps takes about 10 minutes to park or leave my bike though 😅

If using a chain or similar It helps considerably to fit it in such a way that it cannot touch the ground. That way when the thief tries to cut through it they can't use the ground to work-off like a workbench or anvil.

Get a larger lock (like Oxford boss) and loop it through bike cover and rear wheel . 10x more annoying and also prevents others from stealing the actual rain cover on a rainy day

Great video, as usual. Absolutely right. All those measures, whilst thouted as "anti-theft", are actually only meant to be theft deterrents. ANYTHING can be stolen given enough time and adequate tools. Heck when my ignition cylinder went bad on the old FJR, I just replaced it with an on/off $0.99 switch from the parts store ziptied to the ignition hole in the triple tree. The chain and disc lock kept the bike safe.

The UK has a big campaign about this. Cover the Bike, a alarm lock at the front, a chain at the back and thats a good start. ABUS has the option to use one key for every lock, so you don’t need to carry a lot of keys around.

that was a great video, I liked it. But you forgot the "MOST" effective theft deterrent. Have a bike nobody will go to jail over stealing! That's why I gave my daughter (who lives in an apartment) a 2005 Honda Shadow 750C, lol 😆 It's a great first bike and no one even looked at stealing it for her first season of riding 😂 One thing you didn't mention about the disc locks is the fact that when it rains the rain will set them off! every time....ask me how I know, smh lol

I know chain can be cut through, but it can take enough time to maybe draw attention, or perhaps wear down their cutting wheel, and who knows, perhaps they forgot to bring a spare. I bought my chain from a company called Westech Rigging. Its an extremely heavy chain by Pewag (1/2") that is used as traction chains on Terex dump trucks in mines. Combined with a huge Abus lock, as long as the Lock Picking Lawyer doesn't show up it will take quite some time to get through it. This lock and chain set cost over 300 dollars though so... there's that. I also use a huge Xena lock. But I had to take the alarm thing out of it. It didn't always go off when moved around, and often went off when it shouldn't. Still use the lock without it.

what you want to do is install a taser under the seat that triggers once your wheel spins a couple revolutions. The thieves will be shocked when they discover it.
